- ZamidahRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0My only complaint is that there aren't 500 more chapters for me to read.
Short summary: Protagonist reincarnates from into the body of a new cultivator with meagre resources and a very mild advantage due to his 5 element roots. However, his reincarnation comes with otherworldly knowledge, familiarity with the oddly accurate tropes and cliches of a cultivation world, and a simple system that offers no real boost to his progress (so far) besides simple quantification of his progress and current status.
The writing style is unique and goes into just the right amount of detail for almost every scene, while still managing to stay fast paced. The story is extremely interesting so far, and I often find myself thinking about it while doing other things, even though this is just one of 50+ other stories that I am actively following. I have not noticed any grammar mistakes, and everything flows smoothly, with 0 awkward phrases or word use. I like and appreciate all the characters introduced so far, though one criticism I could see other people making is that many of the unnamed characters seem to be behaving irrationally,
however, I believe that there is likely a plot or worldbuilding reason for this discrepancy.
Reading this story has been one of my best experiences in the past several years. I hope it continues indefinitely or at least comes to a satisfying conclusion, but @PlumBlossom, please don't worry or stress about it if something comes up and you can't or don't want to finish this story. What you've written so far is top quality and I will likely enjoy anything you write. The only reason I haven't read your other story yet is because it's too short and I don't wanna do that to myself. Also if the author or anyone else reads my review this far, if you have any other cultivation story recommendations please DM them to me, I'm always looking for new stuff to read. - GilmoreMorrisonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story breaks all expectations. It is not a cultivation story that try to break away from the cliches but instead uses them to their fullest extent.
The Mc is a reincarnated kid with I would say minimal cheat’s that make him equal to the top 10% of cultivators. He has no broken system that gives him a what ever he wants. The true advantage that he has is that he realizes that everyone besides him is falling into these classic cliches. So he just uses that to his advantage. Like for example the “Protagonist” in the sect (not the mc) is being looked down upon by everybody and nobody believes he will win the tournament so what does our Mc do. He bets everything he has on the “protagonist” so he makes bank. But he also does smarter stuff like when picking out a technique he does not go heavenly Moutain shaking fist but turtle breathing technique to be able to conceal his presence. The character is just very smart while everyone else plays into cliches.
It is truly a different but great cultivation story. The only downside is less than perfect grammar but who can actually find that.
5/5 story - Michael GnizakRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is a joy to read, funny, and the MC is smart. Unfortunately, the authors seems to have had some life issues come up and stopped writing, hopefully they can recover and continue to write!
I’d normally not recommend reading a novel that was dropped like this but this one is just fun so give it a try! - Natasha Velkirk (Zach or Zach)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Unsurprisingly the best part of this story is it's lead, Ji Ning. He is clever, and while he is certainly exploiting reincarnator buffs to their fullest, they aren't throwing him ahead. This isn't some, "and then I killed this one bad guy and became OP" stories. Ning'er works hard, and is rewarded as such. Their buff from being a reincarnator is simply knowledge. Unbeholden to the rest of the worlds silliness, he exploits that weakness to its fullest. And, the one method he finds that just gives him a boost isn't to raw power. It's to cultivation and comprehension speed. Both of which, while massively important, are reliant on other things to be brought to bear. Couple that with Ning'er having an entertaining but realistic strategy to thrive in his new world?
Its nice. Also, I love how he hasn't realized he's also a cliché, being the beautiful feminine guy who uses poison. It's cute.
If you like stories about exploits, clever protagonists, or the ever popular genre of poking fun at cultivation stories while also loving them at the same time, I wholeheartedly recommend this story. - Talara NiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just very enjoyable. It sort of makes use of, subverts, or makes fun of many, many xianxia tropes, in a very fun way! Kind of like a silly deconstruction of xianxia, almost? I never have, and probably never will, read an actual xianxia novel, but reading stuff like this, that's based on them? Amazing.
Also, something about the writing style is very... charming? I really like it. - DksDarkstriderRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Interesting and fresh story that manages to hook me. It's nice to see a MC that does not let pride rule them and yet manages to do what he does. The system is nice and minimal as well and does not rule the story, yet the chasing gains and watching the numbers rise is something that I sympathize with.
As a person who generally dislikes the cultivation world/method, this is quite nice. I would recommend it. - SK_BearerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0TL/DR: Great idea! Would-be NPC side character becomes quiet background powerhouse utilizing Xianxia novel knowledge and basic common sense. The common sense part doesn't hit you in the face, but it is very strong as a low-key element. Low-key like the MC. Slightly awkward use of language in a pattern that suggests English is not the native language of the author, but that the author has a very high degree of mastery.
ADVANCED REVIEW BEGINS
Grammar: My first and often shortest category. Like a number of recent, interesting Xianxia+Isekai ideas that have cropped up and sucked me in on RR, there doesn't seem to be a native speaker's feel for the language. That said, it's damned close and so we are on the 'climbing out of the uncanny valley' side of the mastery curve. Most technical errors are very minor and you rarely find inappropriate word choices. It is largely in past/future/hypothetical tense expressions, some situations of redundant adjectives and verbs, things like that. Very minor overall. Many native speakers have far worse actual grammar. I know. I've graded those papers.
Style: The style is shifting subtly as the chapters go on. The work is fairly young for the rate of progression and the author appears to be getting their legs under them in terms of a consistent style. That said, our recent chapters (as of this review) have very good interjections of pun and reference humor, pleasant use of mild sarcasm, and other elements which are very difficult even for people well steeped in the same culture as their readers. You will find it generally easy to read and engaging. If anything, the style fails to inspire or capture strong emotional states, is fairly heavy in the literal language of 'tell' rather than 'show', but there is real growth there and it becomes noticeably better in our short span so far.
Story: The story is a fascinating idea. The MC could have gone in any build direction and yet the one they are moving towards is so perfect to the theme it almos - LurkLukeRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Good read for a good laugh at the generic tropes. Agreed with some of the others regarding needing more descriptions than just saying something happened.
I will admit though that it’s great when you just want to turn your brain off and enjoy something, kinda like throwing on a show in the background while laying on the couch. The lack of depth isn’t an issue if all you want is some guilty pleasure content consumption.
Could it be more descriptive? Yes…
Is it enjoyable without it? Yea. - AtreivahaviRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The idea behind the story is good. The Xianxia archetypes are on point but I couldn't feel any kind of tension or excitement from reading it. The writing is somewhat dull and mc's actions are out of context if you take the story's name in account. It is still a bit early to make a complete judgement but as far as I read the story didn't make me feel that it's worthy of my time.
I expected the protagonist munching off Xianxia mcs' ridiculous luck by making social shenanigans but as far as I read I only got a protagonist isolating himself in a room and doing chores while mostly avoiding the Xianxia mc. There was one time the protagonist interracted with the Xianxia mc and it was just a plain transaction. The protagonist didn't show anything above avarage so far and the only type of comedy in the story are puns. - LyetRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Let's start with the positives or positive in this case: the story is not particularly bad or annoying. There you have it.
Otherwise it's a paint-by-numbers xianxia with a "meta" gimmick, which it abuses like a redheaded stepchild. No real consequences or deeper exploration ever comes of the fact that the MC realizes "he's in a xianxia". It is just used to basically fence off any kind of real stakes or tension in the story, I.e. basic rookie author mistake number 1.
The MC has all the personality of oatmeal in a story that has the complexity of fingerpainting. No tension or unique characteristics. Just numbers going up. Wow, such progression.
Anyway the bottom line is that there were no awful mistakes so you kind of get left with the feeling that the author could have produced something interesting if only he put in some real effort.
