- book_gobblerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I usually don't like anime style stories with over-the-top characters and interactions, and this one is no exception. What I see in it is more of a proof of concept for the kind of writing style used. It may be a bit rough around the edges, but then again that is not surprising from something so drastically different from the common on this site. It certainly does not deserve a 0.5 rating, as it was when I wrote this. Maybe the author, or someone else, can polish the style up a little bit and we'll have something to break the monotony.
I'd recommend reading the first chapter to see if you want to continue with the story. - ChronoMKRoyal Road★ 0.5I'll start the review by saying it's clear the author put a lot of time and effort into this given the release pace and chapter length. At the very least, putting this much effort and time into a project is commendable, and I hope they can continue to learn and grow their writing skills from here if they enjoy it.
However.
I don't think many stories are truly "unreadable", because even broken grammar and listless plots can be suffered through. After reading through chapter one then skimming through the rest to see if improvements were made, I've concluded that this story I think is the first I've read that breaks that line so clearly from the start, as it's clear that these are the authors stylistic choices, and not second language grammar issues. Breaking conventional writing practices can work in a story's benefit, but this is just simply too broken of a style to parse.
For example, actions happen in the narration sections in the FUTURE TENSE. Why? Present tense is weird enough, but I have legitimately never seen future tense used. Additionally, there is extreme overuse of ellipses and single exclamation points in the spoken sections, which when combined with the lack of any descriptions for people, colors, or really anything at all makes the soul of the story impenetrable.
Style: I respect that a lot of risks were taken with the style, but when combined together it just doesn't work. Weird semi-movie script formatting, future tense grammar, a lack of descriptions of pretty much any character or item (the most descriptive items that I could find in chapter 1 were to call the empress "pink" and the black truck was literally labelled "Black Truck") make the style, frankly, illegible. I can kiiiiind of see where the author was going with the cinematic, episodic feel of the writing, but the execution was just not there. Either the style needs a significant amount of work shopping or just revert to tried and true conventions. The limitations of the style and it's fallo
