- urrthyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love the story line. The plot is COOKING. Each chapter is a palatable amount of words and doesn’t take too long to read, and easily understood. Great amount of detail in the fight scenes that I can easily imagine unfolding in my head too! Love the story so far keep it cookin’ 🧑🍳
- FallenMoon3Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Plot Setup: Does the introduction effectively establish the plot?
Yes, I think all the necessary information was well presented, I wasn't left confused or feeling like something was missing. And the story seemed interesting.
Coolness Factor: Does the action or storyline feel engaging and exciting?
I think so? The protagonist seemed like a classic badass character from what I read.
Hook Effectiveness: Did the first chapter draw you in and make you want to read more?
Honestly not much, there weren't many impactful events to keep me reading. If I were you, I would find a way to put the master's or the MC's life at risk at the end of the chapter(something like that).
Avenging the master's dishonor is not something that interests me. It lacks more emotion. You could make the master lose something besides honor.
A world where people solve things with martial arts is ok, basically a modern Xianxia. It could become something cool like The God of High School
Writing Level: How would you assess the quality of my writing? Especially related to describing martial arts.
As I was listening, the text was at a good level, (pacing, descriptions, dialogues were all fine), but if I had to read it the paragraph length would have turned me off immediately.
I think the description of the fight was good, it wasn't the best it could be but it was good enough. On par with most of the books here.
I think to improve this, you could detail the movements more using more "pretty" words (but only sometimes, so as not to slow down the pace)
Overall it was a good first chapter. - evilc1tyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As stated in the title, I'm a longtime reader of CallMeMFor's works. I try to check in to see what's new every now and then, but I must say I'm really enjoying how "Sunset Rebellion" is going plotwise so far. The way he writes these scenes is probably my favorite part of the writing style used, i think its unique and really makes you wonder what will happen next.
- leon888Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0i HATE reading, but this story is an exception.
Action is pretty brutal and fights have great detail, like the violence and action is pretty direct and for sure delivers. The story is fast paced, and moves quickly without getting bogged down.
I recommend check it out its worth trust 🫶 - tagamantraRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fast kinetic pugilism, smart MC with both battle wits and battle smarts, and a compelling modern-esque martial arts underworld spells the makings of a modern classic in the martial arts genre if the author can pull it off. The first few chapters are rocketing in their brisk pace, but that's exactly what you want from this kind of story. It's no nonsense, no holds barred beatdowns between martial artists. The makings of a classic battle fiction.
Style: The style here is strong, with the author writing in a very compelling first person style that gives us an important peek into the mind of our martial artist MC and how they perform their great feats.
Story: The story is straightforward as a punch for now. The MC has to go beat up two Clan Gangs. It's a great setup in general for battle fiction, making sure that the great fights are never too far from each other. The fights are the highlight: brutal, quick, and kinetic. The kinds of grounded fights one would see in the likes of The Raid or Police Story, just with extra anime-flair. It's great and is easily the best part of the fiction!
Grammar: The grammar is short and punchy (heh), though the formatting could use some work. Cutting dialogue into new paragraphs could help reading the entire thing, and judicious use of paragraph breaks could nehance the punchy nature of the fiction. There's also a few moments where the (majority) past tense shifts into present tense which does kind of jerk me out of it, but not so much that I don't want to keep reading.
Character: The character writing here has the same stylishness of a battle manga or a pulp action comic. Everyone has mostly strong personalities that shine, even the MC (huge plus!) which contributes to this rip roaring martial arts world.
If you're in the looking for a good battle book with a strong MC and a compelling, almost John Wick-esque world, please do check this out. It's a VERY fun read! - BlueShearRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5TL;DR Version:
Oh man, the hits just keep on coming, and I do mean that literally. High octane, adrenaline fueled, martial madness straight from the jump. We’re dropped into a story where the main character has already been training for years now. And apparently, matching fisticuffs with a martial master since early childhood has its perks. Buoyed by an overwhelming strength he rightfully earned, in a world where the strong can effectively do whatever they want, and I think you can see where this is going.
————————
Character: You’re typical sociopathic mc in the beginning—and with the way he lived his early years, honestly who can blame him—it is nevertheless refreshing to find a main character that holds no quarter. See a bad guy? Well with him, there is no “if I see you again you’re dead,” nonsense. No, this man is judge, jury, and executioner for the wicked and unjust. Even better, by the end of the sixth chapter we get to see a more human side to him, showing that he isn’t just an unfeeling killing machine, but a person with morals as well.
Story: Faced paced and unapologetic. Zooming though a corrupt gang in what basically amounts to minutes, the combat is where this story really shines. The creative use of techniques and the interplay between them is so fun to watch. Even if the main character tends to take most of those hits to the face to assert dominance… I’m looking forward to seeing his arrogance humbled a bit—I can’t imagine he’s really the strongest in the world—only for him to rise from the ashes even stronger than before.
Style: The style is somewhat typical to the usual wuxia, martial artist, combat junket genre. Not that this is in any way a bad thing. It’s just that nothing stood out to me as noteworthy in the style department. It serves its purpose, which is to feed you as many fight scenes as the author can come up with, in as concise a way as possible. Which I do appreciate.
Grammar: Less a grammatical issue I have with the chapters, than a spac - C.S. CharlesRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Sunset Rebellion presents a promising foundation, with strong aspects in internal monologue, action scenes, and a compelling plot where an overpowered protagonist goes on a hero’s journey to reform/takedown powerful and corrupt gangs in a fantasy world. However, several elements need refining to improve the overall reading experience.
Style: 3 Stars
The writing showcases potential, particularly through Vellin’s internal monologues, which effectively explore his doubts and motivations. The descriptions are skillfully incorporated, never bogging down the pacing. However, there are noticeable weaknesses, especially with awkward phrases such as “out cold for good” and “Are you joking or are you serious?” which disrupt the otherwise engaging tone. These could be revised for more natural, evocative language that better aligns with the intense world and stakes of the story.
Additionally, paragraphs need to be broken up for clarity and better flow. The frequent blocks of dense text make it difficult to maintain the pace of action or dialogue. More fluid transitions and spacing between ideas would enhance readability.
Grammar: 3.5 Stars
The text is generally solid in terms of grammar, though some mistakes slip through in significantly jarring ways. These types of errors are minor but noticeable and detract from the writing. Again, the long paragraphs are the most critical flaw in the grammar and need to be broken up to better convey and separate dialogue exchanges and disparate action and reflection.
Story: 4.5 Stars
The overall story is compelling, with the plot moving forward at a good pace. The MC, Vellin, is driven by a sense of duty to clean up a corrupt world and particularly either destroy or reform his mentor’s former clan. His goals are clearly set up, and the stakes are high, which helps maintain interest. The initial hooks are well-placed, especially Vellin’s encounters with the gangs in Het, a scene that both hooks the reader and raises questions about the larger - Technical Superhero DirectoryRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0its a very good start, very interesting, i like the general premis, but the writing itself is very clunky. this can defenetly go soemwhere with some more practice. the dialoge itself is what needs the most work the inner monolog and discriptions of whats going on are all very good, but the way characters speak to each other falls a bit flat and unrealistic a lot of the time
please do not take this as me being mean, it simply seems like you need more practice and i want to push you to look at exactly what needs work. - quandoRoyal Road★★ 1.5This book lacks any understanding of the human condition: how real people think, feel and behave. As a result it feels more like an open sandbox game with a bunch of ai chatbot NPCs pointlessly interacting rather than anything grounded in reality. All that is left is a boring power fantasy that feels like it was the result of an eight year old boy's game of make-believe.
