- FatomirRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A story about a young man that's fallen on hard times, struggling to make something of himself. When receiving a mysterious offer, he leaves behind everything he knows to strive for a great destiny.
But he is gonna have to work for it.
Style: Delivered in first person perspective from the protagonist, the story's style is very descriptive which lends itself to a story about being in an altogether different world. The few encounters with the wildlife so far have been delivered in engaging and succinct action scenes without unnecessary flourishes.
Story: MC gets teleported to another world, but not the one he is meant to go to. He has to earn passage there first. A fun twist on these kinds of isekai/portal fantasy stories, this sets up the potential for a unique story about the hardships and struggles of survival and exploration in an unfamiliar, fantastical environment.
Grammar: No major complaints, no errors that have impacted my enjoyment of the story!
Character: So far, really only two characters have been introduced, Markus and his mysterious sponsor from another world. Starting the story off with seeing Markus at his lowest point, the only way for him to go is up. If this is managed well and Markus gets to grow as a person and deal with his various traumas and issues, I believe this Story has amazing potential. The promise of eventual companions that comes with his occupation as tamer is a further plus point, and should help relieve any potential issues that arise from only focusing on one character.
All in all an enjoyable read so far, and amazing setup for future developments. - AthimberRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I mean the title of this in the strictest sense. Stumbled on the author through a KU recommendation, read the first book through the night, found them on RR but stubbed, subscribed to Patreon and binge read through books 2 and 3, and then on here to run through to end of book 6. Total sleep is probably 8 hours through the last three+ nights.
Dear author, may your tribe flourish and I hope you continue to be the reason I lose sleep for all the delightful, lovely, heartwarming, tearjerking, and wonderfully fantastical reasons. - ArcanePandaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Gotta catch them all slave master dominating so far I hope for that to change soon because that is not the type of vibe I like in stories I am reading but gotta catch them all. The story so far has been an interesting change of pace from the standard isekai genre.
- AlisonlpsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am really enjoying the story! It was a somewhat slow start, with the MC suffering through change, but once he became less reactive and more proactive to meet his needs, it gets really interesting! The crafting, experimenting, and the ongoing development with his bonds are great! I am also enjoying the growing complexity of the world and situations! The challenges and solutions are interesting to read!
- BoredHandsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's well past time I left a review. This story is very well done. Markus fits the down on his luck trope and gets pulled into a wild new world for training with little preparation (which is on him).
The premise is strong and the beginning is great. The pacing leans toward a slow burn at some parts of the story. I'm especially eager to see how the current arc wraps up—particularly Markus' choices regarding -
who stays or goes with him, how the village & tribe conflicts, council and leadership issues are resolved, and more.
I'm just as excited for the next arc in the new world. The stakes have been well set up, and I'm curious to see how that world reacts to Markus and his group—especially the politics. I hope he doesn't just get thrown straight into the fire. I'd love the same amount of world building the training world has received.
His abilities are intriguing, and I love the focus on experimentation rather than OP tech integration - instead it is implementation of basic ideas and concepts
The character development is solid across the board—from Markus to the supporting characters and the antagonists. The writing is polished with no noticeable grammar issues, and the action scenes and world-building are impressive. I’d love to see more POV shifts to get inside other characters’ heads, but overall, great work so far! :D - CT JohnsonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall
While I am still reading it, so far it is off to a wonderful start. From the start it is filled with action and adventure, leading into world that is thought out and detailed. I'm excited to see where the rest of the story goes.
Style
The style is a nice change of pace with how the world is introduced. It's gradual and straightforward making it easy to get into. It's also unique in the fact that it's introduction also serves as part of the plot which hooks the reader into the characters plight.
Story
The story follows a character who wants a way out and finds more than he bargains for in the process. I always MC's who are tamers and the world building that follows our MC excited me for all the things to come.
Grammar
I didn't notice any grammatical errors and the paragraph structure flowed well with the story being told. So i don't expect any problems that will break immersion.
Character
Where I am at in the story the protagonist is still alone and finding his way, but as a character he is fun. The author has managed to bring the character to life and relate him to the reader in a way that makes you want to keep reading.
Overall it is a great story and I am looking forward to continuing . - DWinchesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am not a huge fan of first person, but that's not something to ding the author on. It's her style and she does it well.
So, if that's the case why did I keep reading? The same reason everyone and their brother had a hunter alt in WoW. Pet classes are awesome, and S. Winter's treatment of them in an Isekai sense is everything I hoped it would be. Come for the pets, stay for the exquisite world building. - Bio_bakRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Before the long story, I’ll just like to say one thing. I like Markus. Not rock bottom Markus. Not what the hell have I gotten myself into Markus, but Markus. The unadulterated amalgamation of the Markus who literally hit rock bottom, felt he couldn’t go any lower and decided to test his resolve six feet deep. The Markus that survives and the Markus that evolves. For those reading this review because they want to know if the story is worth their time, Markus is the main character.
In the beginning he contemplates self extermination, gets a chance at a new life and takes it because he can, then goes on to be worthy of the destination he’s chasing after. Now that I’m done with my MC love rant. The story.
The author has done one of the simplest yet most difficult things to do amongst authors on this platform. The author has displayed the greatest aspect of simplicity; its beauty.
The story is not overwrought. There are no unnecessary and overwhelming info dumps. The author uses simple words and simple sentences to create simple paragraphs to tell a soft flowing story of a man recreating himself. People would want to call it discovering himself but I assure you it is not a rediscovery. If you read the story you’ll see that, as early as chapter 5, his already making decisions using the mentality of a simple and bending it to work with the reality of his situation. I believe this should be enough to explain how beautiful the author’s grammar and style is. As for the characters, there’s really just one focused character as at where I currently am and the depths being shown in the way he interacts with his new reality shows that time was taken into creating him and the world around him.
I am more than happy to wait for his first interaction with another human.
As a bastardization of the famous saying goes: their meeting will be Legendary. - BobCharlieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I usually have a hard time getting immersed in first person perspective stories, but S. L. Winter has gone above and beyond my expectations with this one. The prologue hooked me, and the first chapter reeled me right in!
This is my first time reading a tamer class story, and I'm really starting to question why i have not seen more of them. This is FUN!!
I'm not fully caught up, but the story itself has thus far been excellent. Down on his luck and looking for a way out, Markus finds himself in possesion of a token that might very well provide everything he's ever wanted and more. But this new life isnt free. This fresh start comes with some some harsh requirements.
The authors style is crisp and clean. The story is obviously well-thought-out, and the pacing is excellent.
As far as grammer goes, it is GREAT!! All of my favorite authors are from overseas, so the proper English spelling is like a breath of fresh air in my vulgar American lungs.
As for the character, Markus is extremely relatable, likable, smart, and close to perfection when it comes to 'Self Insertion'.
All in all, I Highly recommend Taming Destiny. Not only for fans of Lit-rpg/progression, but anyone who enjoys some good fantasy is in for a treat with this one. - KiwidrakenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I almost regret picking this up when there are only a few chapters since I need and want more. But I can say now that it's definitely that shows a lot of promise. Of course, it remains to be seen if it can live up to it. But I am looking forward to it.
Style
The perspective shifts back and forth between the present and what led up to it, which can be confusing if it's not done well. Thankfully, it is. The shifts are clearly marked. And the 'present' perspective makes you want to read the past while also continuing to see what's going to happen. However, the 'present' perspective is still a tad confusing at first since you don't know anything. But that's the point.
Story
Like I said, I picked this up to early to get a clear read on what the story is really going to be. But so far, there seems to be some promising world-building in store, based on the few interactions with the world around him that the MC has had.
Grammar
I couldn't find any faults with the grammar, which makes it flawless in my eyes.
Character
The reader doesn't get to know much about the main character in the beginning, only what has just happened to him. But it seems like he is main-character worthy, just in need of a little development and some fleshing out.
