Description

Five thousand kilometres from shore. A sea of leviathans snapping at her heels. Marisol has never felt more alive.

Nearly a century ago, rifts opened and giant magic-blooded bugs descended upon humanity. They were named the ‘Swarm’ for their fierce, insatiable hunger for human flesh—but born and raised in a small desert village, Sand-Dancer Marisol wants nothing to do with them. All she wants to do is sail to a legendary island city and bring a vial of healing seawater back to her sickly mama. Who has time to care about some distant war?

But just when she earns enough to pay for her once-in-a-lifetime trip to the city, a swarm of leviathans attack her ship and strand her in the middle of the sea, forcing her to pick a class from a system.

Three out of four classes will save her life and bring her home, but only one will let her stand on water, move forward, and save her mother.

So what if her system tells her she has a less than one percent chance of making the journey?

Marisol will skate to the city or die trying.

If you're looking for a relatively light-hearted (although, with the author's track record, we're definitely going to get tons of climactic, tear-jerker chapters) story with a stubbornly upbeat MC, this is THE one for you!
Prose, pacing, and grammar are, as usual coming from Maradina, impeccable. Nothing to say there. For this story in particular, I couldn't give criticism even if I wanted. It's just been so damn fun so far. Def check it out. You exchange the risk of losing 3 minutes of your life skimming the first chapter for the potential of embarking on an awesome journey

Great story, while the first half took me around two weeks to get through and had some high and low points the second half (from around chapter 60 onwards) was all so intense that I finished it in a few hours, really looking forward to seeing Marisol again in the other Brightburrow stories, the story is so much better than I expected from the ad.

Do you crave a character driven story? Do you crave meaningful, measurable improvement of the character?
If so, this is for you.
Child of a single parent, living a different life with a different dream in an ongoing apocalypse, dares to challenge the universe to save her mother from an illness.
From the shining sands to the stormy seas, Marisol's journey will keep you at the edge of your seat as she keeps taking risks and doing the work to make them pay off.
Along the way, we not only get to meet more new complicated characters who help her challenge her expectations about herself and find ways to keep growing.

Great story! Love the MC and how she reacts to situations, and despite the very alien nature of the setting it is still incredibly easy to connect with the characters.
If I had to give one criticism of the story, it would be that it feels like the details of the worldbuilding are reliant upon prior knowledge which, if I had to assume, can be found in other books. Just a bit more info on the characters that are briefly spoken of (such as the Worm God) and on the war in general would easily resolve this

One of the best litrpgs I have ever read. The world building is great, the characters are great, the magic system is interesting (it’s so cool that you have to eat the bugs to gain exp instead of just killing them) the plot is gripping… Yeah. This is really good and the writer should be proud of themself for creating such an entertaining story.

The worldbuilding is great as always, and it hints at a few other stories. The water strider mutations are always interesting and unique enough, I also really like the water bug facts in the author’s notes
If you don’t read other Brightburrow books you don’t have to worry, I also started with Storm Strider

I loved reading through this story! The heroine is very inspiring and relatable. Not all powerful, clumsy at times, but absolutely ferosious when it counts.
i also love the interconnected and terrifying world setting. The Swarm, the Hasharana, the different fronts against the Swarm.
i started with „The Unmaker“ and the „Worm Mage“ is next on the list!
    Thanks for writing this story!

This is a litrpg that's very different from other litrpgs I've read in that it follows the typical writing flow and tropes of a Young Adult Hero's Journey story. If you're looking for the progression fantasy of a normal litrpg then this is not the story for you. The story does an excellent job of keeping things simple for a younger audience, though if you binge read it the main character will often come across as a forgetful idiot, frequently asking for previously explained information to be restated for the benefit of the reader.
Has a fascinating world that I really wish we could explore more with a character who cares about exploring. Alas our MC has an extremely one track mind regarding her quest to get medicine for her mother. In the most recent book/arc she's starting to learn to live but it has been a slow process.
The story has a bad habit about using deus ex machina. Almost every stumbling block she comes across is perfectly overcome by her most recently learned technique or system upgrade. New techniques and upgrades will often not be shown until right before she needs them for that stumbling block, which leads to that deus ex machina moment.
Our MC is pretty much a talented airhead. It is nice to see how hyper-competent she is with her chosen class, especially when she's trailblazing with it. She often seems to forget things she's learned, even just earlier that day, and needs to be reminded to apply them in the right scenario. Then there's the restating of lore information mentioned above. Throw in that she's basically a country girl just stepping into the wider world and she really just comes across as an airhead a lot of the time.
Side and background characters are mostly not important or given much screen time. Even if they get a solid lore dump for their backstory their interactions with our MC rarely seem to affect her as a person. Exceptions are her system AI, Archive who seems to be growing when you wouldn't expect them to. Lots of good banter, bu

"Babe wake up, Maradina just dropped a new story" (my pitiful attempt at harnessing the power of memes)
Wooooo let's just get into it
Style: Just like the author's other works, the style is very fluid and descriptive with varied sentence structure and non-repetitive wording. It feels as though the reader can feel the movement and the energy of the characters through the screen and the author is very thorough with the descriptions. They mention different aspects of the environment that most people probably wouldn't even think of and it's just very refreshing with no issues.
Grammar: I don't think I've come across a single grammatical issue in the ten chapters I've read so far. 5/5
Story: At first glance, the synopsis might make it seem like the story is fairly straightforward, however, the author quickly subverts our expectations and we realize the road ahead will have a lot of speedbumps. I especially like how the location Marisol is currently at is not just some random place but is also part of the mystery and has us readers asking questions. For the worldbuilding, the series has only just begun so not too much information has been given yet but it is apparent that there is a wider world that we will get to explore in the future.
If I had to pick one tiny thing to nitpick, it would be the fact that despite the idea of "this class is extremely difficult and nobody picks it for a good reason" being continually reinforced over several chapters, Marisol as of yet hasn't really hit a major roadblock adapting to these difficulties. However, I also understand that "Marisol is really, really, really good at dancing" is part of the setting and that this was already addressed a few times so I will still give 5 stars.
Edit 1: After some more chapters have come out (currently at chapter 34) I am dropping 0.5 stars from the story score because of the aforementioned nitpick and the fact that Marisol seems to get a new dance technique every time an issue comes up, which is not un

How characters affects their surroundings with magically enhanced bodies and their abilities are always a bit arbitrary in these types of stories. I usually don't mind it but in this story, every chapter the suspicion of my disbelief takes a beating. Problems are repeatedly trivialized by some never before seen magic and the tension from the earlier chapters is unlikely to return.
