Description
In the Antorxian Empire, magical talent can be a curse.
Dorian hoped he'd never set eyes on a Reeve, one of Antorx's sorcerer-knights, but as mage scouts they were ruthless, thorough, and impossible to hide from. On the day they finally arrived in his small village of Kirkswill, he knew his quiet life as a scribe's apprentice was over.
Dorian would be taken to Windshriek Academy, where the harsh conditions and cruel punishments would either turn him into a loyal sorcerer for the Antorxian Empire, or destroy him. There were no other outcomes, and no magical talent was permitted to foster outside of Antorxian control.
A high-fantasy dark magic academia story.

The problems the mc faces are resolved in creative ways that dont feel like plot armor.
I think this novel will be really popular in the near future
(Author please dont stop writing, pleaseeeeeee) - BlindCentaurRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great start!
I'd like to point some good things about this novel:
- The MC is a no no-sense guy. He knows he's in a predicament and he'll scrape for power even though is coming for those who put him in this situation.
- very logical MC. He knows his leverage it's brains and not muscles. So he'll focus his power on that.
- very promising side characters! It's great they are not friends-friends or mortal enemies with MC by the beginning like so many novels do.
And the most awesome thing.... A VERY DISTOTER MAGIC ACADEMY! Mc will need to sweat a bit to not get himself killed! :) - Cyber30Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've enjoyed almost all parts of this story, but one thing that stands out to me is the descriptions everything paints a complete picture in my mind and makes the slower pacing of this feel full and enjoyable. It is dark and always keep you on your toes not sure what to expect.
- Emma MassRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wow, this is amazing.
I'm really glad I picked up this story. It's especially unique and I really enjoy Dorian narration.
It was ironic and kinda jarring for me but in a pleasantly surprised sort of way, that I didn't know Dorians name until about ch 7-10ish - how it didn't really bother me because I was so invested in his story.
Further, this story really keeps me on my toes. I never know what to expect. Dorian's voice is unique, analytic, introspective and critical. I really like him as a character.
I also like how, despite minimal interaction, there other characters that were introduced so far feel so complete and strangely fleshed out? Even though it's early days, that's a testiment to good writing.
I can say with complete confidence that this is an entirely unique and captivating story. And I've read a lot of stories. So far, this is definitely up there in my top 10 despite the stories infancy.
Maybe I'm strange but some of it is so unexpected, it's really funny to me. So I somehow get humour from this incredibly dark dystopian world.
The spirits are set up in an incredibly fascinating way. They all feel like grounded characters in their own way. I can see their motivations, understand their nature and even somewhat empathise with them?(That's probably weird but it's honestly a compliment to the author)
The descriptors are also really good, particularly the sense of smell and the feel of Maja. Everything about the setting and story is so clear in my head I almost feel like I'm living Dorians miserable life.
Keep up the good work 👍
Only critique is that I wish this had more chapters so far and maybe the occasional character sheet in postscript. - Ethan McRaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is like if Harry Potter was taught magic in the Warhammer universe and the entire setting caught depression and nihilism. The story is well written with few grammatical errors. The characters are intellectually diverse and beliveable. The main character is intelligent and educated but is not the 2nd comming. I am totally there for it.
- Karl MarxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story line, character growth, and magic system are all intriguing and refreshing, and the characters fit the setting perfectly. If you want a story with an interesting magic system, a do or die element, and interesting characters that seem alive in the world, then this is the read for you. I’ve had this favorited for a while now and I hope that the author continues with more chapters.
- NightmareShamanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well written with vivid descriptions.
Interesting characters with a magic school that has an interesting twist.
I think the MC's naivete is accurate to the character but I also think it extends a bit unrealistically into mercy towards enemies who have tried to kill him already. Excited to see how the character develops ans changes overtime.
Read till the recent chapter and very excited to read more. I will be checking our other fictions by this author. - ReymendinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The setting is well thought out and I appreciate that the characters don't feel 2d or like they are making dumb decisions for the sake of the plot. The story seems good so far as well, though it's more of a slow burn so we're not too far in yet. It's been a really fun read!
A few things I think are handled very well that I'd like to call out:
gritty, but not trying too hard to be edgy
The magic system is very multifaceted, which gives the author a lot of flexibility to do interesting things, and so far it's all been fairly well balanced, no "I discovered this one weird quirk to become mega-poweful"
Currencies and trades all seem reasonable, which I think is always a good indicator for attention to detail from the author
The writing flows very well and is a pleasure to read
Cons(?):
pacing has been slow so far, fine for a slow burn, but hopefully it doesn't start getting sucked into endless side stories without main plot development.
Considering the wide gap between the MC and the institutional powers that seem to be the antagonists, balancing the pace seems like it will prove tricky (keeping the power scaling sensible while not having a glacially slow plot). It seems like bridging that gap would require time-skips, some big shake-up in the setting, or a really long book. Any of which could be fine, but are tricky to do well. It seems so far like this is more of a character driven book, which is great but hopefully won't come at the expense of the plot going forward. Not really a con since nothing like that has happened yet, just a concern. So far it's been great, thanks author! :) - RodneyDangersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Loving the gritty nature of this novel, and it has a fun approach to magic that feels fun to follow. Additionally, the main character feels well thought out without being overly developed this early in the book. My only complaint so far is that I want to read even more!
- Sam WilliamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An absolutely excellent read.
This story has a slightly darker tone than most of the stories on this site (atleast as far as ove read and Ive read alot). But at no point does it feel like the reader is being edgy for the sake of being edgy. Nor is the character some mopey edgelord. Instead hes portrayed as a smart talented young lad thrust into some pretty awful circumstances but trying to make the best of it.
As of chapter 15 this is certainly one of the best stories ive encounted on this site. I am excited to see where the author take it.
