- MkrugelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've had my eye on this story for a while, pressing all the correct bottons to make sure I'm kept up to date with how the chapters are being posted on Royal Road. So when I saw that book 2 what busy being posted, chapter by chapter, I dived into the story. With more that a fair amount of glee, because I knew any and everthing written by this author always turns out great!
This story reminds me alot of a previous book published by this author 'Iron Prince'. Not that the storyline is remotely similar.
(You never get a repeat of the same storyline with this author), where I drew similarities was that both main characters start off with a disadvantage and both characters work their butts off to get ahead, to show the rest what hard work acomplishes.
What is unique about this main character is that when 'Sylvas' is introduced he already has this big chip on his shoulder. And as we get to a few chapters ahead that chip becomes a whole world.
What I found so awesome about this story is that the author writes a realistic way as to how he would have carried that weight.
Many authors make the mistake of having something horrible happen to the character but said character recovers in the following chapters.
This makes it feel like a realistic way someone mught have carried this weight IRL. And we see how this weight shapes Sylvas' every decision. But most of all we get to relate to what someone like that would go through! - TNTeadybearsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The overall concept seems solid, and the relatively fast yet detailed account of his time on his home planet gives useful context without dragging on aimlessly.
It’s too bad that the only person he loves does before he leaves the planet (real shocker).
I’m just sad that I found it so soon when it doesn’t have many chapters. - Mridula RRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Binged the whole thing couldn't stop reading till the latest chapter, now want to collect some chapters before I start back else it won't feel satisfying :-)
Great writing style and easy to root for MC and good hints of what's to come - after all there is a prophecy, waiting to see how it goes!
Fast paced story which is well written. Almost always I end up skim-reading the fights, but here interesting stuff happens during the fights which can't be skimmed and it's all written well so that's something really cool.
Also female characters are not props / body parts / love interests / who need to be rescued - so double thumbs up.
In fact, all characters are well fleshed and the interactions and dialogues are great too. Well written overall, thanks to the author for such a great story! - EddieMRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A true mage story ( so far )... about mages not swordsmen with magical abilities or skills. It is kind of a dark setting. This is a different story setting and system than any I've seen on royal road yet. I really like it so far. I believe you won't be disappointed.
- lordmontiRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0just finished reading up to chapter 11 after seeing the author post this on Reddit.
the first few chapters are a bit rough, hard to match a character to there age and the chapters are a bit stiff. But the author gets into there groove and the story improves dramatically.
the story finally catches up to where the description of the book is at chapter 11, so we will see how the book moves forward now that the prologue is over.
This would be a good read if your interested in a studious OC that grows quick in power, whether that turns to OPness in the future is yet to be determined
The battle scenes were well fleshed out and a good sign of future combat scenes. - KvothetamerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I really like this story.
Every character has a fleshed out personality that's unique to them, so you can actually remember who's who.
The plot is interesting and unpredictable, with one of the coolest plot twists I've seen on this site in the beginning of the story.
The magic system is very cool, with different spells and systems with fight scenes that keep your attention.
The only complaint that I have(not even really my complaint honestly), which is something I've seen in other reviews, is that maybe this story needs a grimdark tag, or some kind of trauma tag, because the main character is constantly put through the ringer mentally and physically. I for one find it interesting and compelling, but I understand the other reviews complaints about it blindsiding them. - FitzgibbonRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I really enjoyed the concept of this story starting out, once you get past what feels like an insanely long prologue. The main conceit of the series is incredibly amusing. However, I have some problems. Aside from the fact that the academy he is sent to quickly gimps one of the few real advantages he has, it also procedes to dump so much trauma on the main character that it becomes a tango of masochism and nihilism to read. The author literally treated a psychotic break as a power boost, and that was the point where I had to stop because it just got to be too much for me. It became too hard to see an outcome in the story where they are anything but homicidally insane. Mental health is important, and it feels like it needs to be taken more seriously than it is in this story.
- dobbs400Royal Road★★★★ 3.5Currently at chapter 18 and it is a refreshingly well written story, with a unique to me at least plot. My main concern is the characterization of the lead and some supporting cast.
Upon introduction of "Sir" its pretty obvious there is a distinctdrill sergeant military theme, but my worry is he is playing a antagonistic character simply to be an antagonist. A well developed military force typically trains and educates, a mindless order following Soldier does not last long in the chaos of warfare. If they want Vail to become strong enough to be useful the casual disregard for Vail and his dwarf companion does not build comraderie or instill a sense of belonging. While it seems a theme that life or death of their soldiers doesn't matter, that speaks to perhaps a plot hole. Why would a civilization in a galactic war not do everything in their power to produce strong, capable warriors instead of throwing what seems to be alluding to throwing them away at the first failure or at the very least giving a strong understanding of why they do what they do.
I'm probably reading to far into things given the undeveloped state of the plot but I've seen countless stories go down that rabbit hole. Still following to see where this story goes. Once again the writing is polished and miles above many works on here. I would certainly recommend giving it a try. - K. D. FlynnRoyal Road★ 1.0I was actually pretty happy with how this story started, despite all the tropes and clichés. They weren't overbearing or in your face much. Everything up to chapter 10 seemed grounded and reasonable (despite the amount of self harm depicted) for a fantasy cultivator style progression.
I know this had a sci-fi tag (space opera, w/e), that's how I found it. But as of the first full book and 20 chapters in to the second, there is zero, and I really mean zero, space opera. Nothing happens in space, except for some travel. Everything happens in some twisted, psychotic version of Hogwart's, where it's apparently ok to abuse military recruits, train them to abuse their peers and play power games with each other, train them to be solely responsible for their own well being in combat and train them to actually like all of that and accept it as normal. Well, it's not normal. No functioning military can survive without unit cohesion and the encouragement to bond with and rely on your squad mates. Any one that had any military experience would know this intuitively.
The pacing is also very much a red flag. The amount of time spent "in academy", based on the number of chapters so far, makes this look like a ten book affair just to get onto the real story.
The last 34 chapters of the first book encompassed 3 or 4 weeks of academy. The first 20 chapters of book 2 have only advanced that by a week or two at most.
Then there are the glaring inconsistencies and incongruities one comes to expect of a military acumen
Recruits are thrown into a no holds barred deathmatch literally on their first day, and told that in the military, you survive on your own or you don't survive.
Recruits are tested with a pass / fail scenario after only 2 weeks of training, a good portion of which was spent in hospital after said deathmatch.
The grammar is quite poor, and their doesn't seem to be any attempt to fix errors pointed out by commenters, even months later.
I'd give this an advanced review, but l - ErazRoyal Road★ 1.0So far, we have the main character's life on a medieval tech-level planet as he becomes a mage.
The author is, for some reason, trying to cram a book into a few chapters.
And not even a good one. It's a horrible, trope-filled, cookie-cutter mess.
Raised in a horrible orphanage ✓
Female "friend" who starts to follow the MC for literally no reason ✓
Other students hate the MC because he is "poor" ✓ (We don't even see this; it's just told to us. The MC just interacts with that one girl.)
MC being a moron ✓
That female "friend" becomes a love interest (who would have guessed) ✓
I have no idea why the author started the story here.
Great way to lose readers, though.
