- A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Star Passenger is cut above the standard lightning fast Lit-RPG fair, offering readers something thought through, and well written. It has the vibe of the sci-fi film Contact, a film whose story and cinematography were very much enjoyed. It’s nice to revisit similar vibes.
Style: Star Passenger is a slow-paced science fiction written as a novel. The setting is in the future, I think on a space ship, though the location for the time being escapes me. They end up talking about bulk heads and asphyxiation, so I’m thinking space ship.
The author spends a lot of time developing the characters and their relationships with each other, making the story aspect of the plot take a bit of a back seat. It’s there, churning in the background, like some eerily little mystery, wrapper gets unfolded a little more with every chapter. I love it!
Story: Nick has downloaded a stray signal from deep space. Excited by his strange new findings, he shares the mystery with his sister and a co-worker Rashi. We later learn that this code is indeed alien, and that the data pack itself looks like it contains an index and dictionary. In Interlude the data comes alive, but luckily, it’s on a separate private data cube with a multitude of firewalls stopping it from escaping. The plot thickens!
Character: The story is told through multiple characters, Nick, Shae, Rashi, Keith, and Goose, with Nick as the central character. Nick is an amateur astrologist who works in customer support with Rashi. Shae, if I’m remembering correctly is Nick’s sister and is a top tier programmer, who’s familiar with Earth’s old programming languages, and who has been supporting Nick since their parents died when they were thirteen. I love the way the author weaves these smaller personal stories through out the chapters, pulling us closer to the heart of what the characters tick.
Looking forward to following this story to its end :) - lordearthRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have to say, "Star Passenger" presses all my buttons.
Style:
The technical detail in the story really brings it to another level. I love that the author doesn't shy away from the science, instead using it to add flair to the story itself. It's what makes the story shine, and makes sets it apart from the multitudes of stories out there.
As someone interested in astronomy and computer science, it's just so exciting to see hints of real life embedded here and there. Super cool!
The style reminds me of "The Martian", with the protagonist running us through his thoughts and solving problems that come up along the way. 5/5. Encore!
Story:
I've never had a deep interest in space sci-fi ("The Martian" is basically the only one I've read), but this story kept me hooked nonetheless.
Although action-wise the pacing seems quite slow, I found that it works very well with the author's style. For example, a whole chapter was dedicated to a single conversation, but that conversation explained a lot to the reader, showed a lot about the characters, set the scene and raised the stakes. That's a lot for a single chapter to be doing!
I'm very curious to see how the story progresses, and will definitely be following it as it updates :)
Grammar:
A few spelling mistakes, but nothing that detracts from the story.
Character:
A well sculpted team of characters that have their unique traits and characteristics. Also a great strength of the story. I especially love Sae (can't believe I have a favourite character already), and I'm very excited to see how they work together to explore the mystery in front of them.
I, for one, would also prefer to be called a "computer scientist" rather than a "programmer" XD
Overall, this is a great story, and I would definitely recommend anyone who is intrigued to give it a try! - MrNobodyisHome (E. Anderson)Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Ignore the stupid title this is a story that deserves some attention.
Style
The prose is weakened with all the science jargon that I find interesting but in an objective sense it could be done better. Admittedly, it is hard to tell what is factual and what is made up by the author which is a commendable skill for a fiction writer. The blocky texts may feel like a hassle to get through, but everything else is sharp and gets to the point.
Grammar
All rainbows and sunshine here. You may put the bleach for your eyes away.
Characters
It’s fun to see a main character passionate about something. Nick is a fellow smitten with all concepts about astronomy and is just as likeable as his other cast members: bubbly Rasha, and his genius sister, Sae.
Note that I actually remember the names of these characters (and I didn’t even have to go back and check). I don’t know why but from the fictions I read on this site many authors seem to not put in an effort to characterize their core characters, not even a little. From what I’ve read of this fiction so far, they all have distinct personalities and are equally amusing to follow.
Story
So, check it. Main guy receives a signal from outer space and may or may not be communicating with extraterrestrial life.
It is surprisingly more exciting than I expected. With the mains being passionate about all things space, really gives the whole fiction a real sense of adventure and wonder that seems like a lost concept these days. Sure, seeing a normal person inadvertently being thrown into chaos is compelling, but I argue experiencing characters go after the unknown (and having unexpected consequences) makes for a livelier story.
The author laments about the slow pacing throughout chapters and traditionally it is “slow” but there is a difference between “boring slow” and “enthralling slow”. This is the latter.
So yeah, no explosions, no punches, no scantily scenes in the opening chapters, and if you know what you like I guess you should stir awa - OrlonDogmannRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I am not sure if this is just my monkey brain trying to find patterns, but I feel the love our protagonist has for everything related to Space. Every time he speaks, every time he is sooo close to nerd out, it feels genuine, and this is something I appreciate beyond it all.
Oh, right, the story.
Star Passenger is an adventure in the making, we are witnessing the first steps into something that none of the characters are even prepared to face, and oh gods above I am excited to see how it evolves.
Style Score: I would heavily recommend that you Justify your parragraphs? That would be my one piece of advice! I was originally going to give 4 stars, the interlude alone and its clever usage of the format bumped it right back to it's rightful spot at 5.
Grammar Score: You kind of struggled in that first chapter, with issues using semicolons and such, but it all improved significantly as the story went on. I feel it was mostly nervousness? The eagerness of the first chapter? But I still need to note it. You're improving though, well done!
Story Score: The mundane being slowly derrailed by a touch of the Extraordinary, this is old school Fantasy in space and I adore it. I also like that you are taking the slow burn approach to this, taking your time so we can feel the excitement and uncertainties of our characters.
Character Score: And speaking of the characters! Each of these weirdos just brims with personality! Nick is so awkward and silly, Sae has NO tethers to neurotypical behavior and Rashi is so playful and weird as well? I love them. I wish to see more of them, understand a bit more of what makes them tick. But I will be patient, for I know the payoff will be worth it.
Consider me hooked. - CloudfallRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The style- third person point of view. The emotions, views and actions of the character's are well displayed. The author is really doing a great job in regards to this. I have no problem with progression and third person pov. I believe they work greatly together which is evident in this tale
The story- the plotline is good. 'It's about Nick whose passion is astronomy, and one day his instruments pick up something really strange. Together with his friends; he pieces the weird signals together into clues, and those clues lead them to a discovery that will shift the destiny of humankind overnight ' The author is doing a good job to stay in line of the plot. I only feel that it's progressing rather too slow. Although it's still at the early stages, this is how I felt.
The grammar- the grammar is on point. It's one of the basic requirement of the readers to have a good time reading a book, and this Author is doing a good job in this. The There were no error that could affect the flow of the novel. Good work.
The character- Is well written. Although it was still too early to judge properly. But from the few have seen,
All in all, a very good book. - mjcervanezRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0From the synopsis, it pulls me right off to see what this alien intelligence is all about. The story does take its time to build up what the mc’s technological work is like and a brief description of the story’s lore- especially to mention the mysterious alien intelligence he and his friends have to deal with.
Style: This tells in a 3rd person narrative, but it sticks to the thoughts of the mc, Nick. The author had really put so much detail in certain paragraphs when needed, though I am not a tech-nerd/geek/enthusiast myself, hehe.
I like the separation between of specific paragraphs in order to organize the time/place of the chapters
Grammar: Despite the technical terms, though, I could still follow the flow of the sentences to tell what was going on. However, there are still some things that need to be fixing (particularly when a sentence needs a comma). Regardless, it was not a bother as the rest as it’s still understandable regarding how I understood the sentences.
Story: Readers are noted from the author that this will be a slow burner before. So for those who urge the excitement part of the story, it will happen… in time. I can see the expertise of the technical aspect of occurrences within the characters, so it really makes the narrative natural.
Character(s): From the three characters: Nick (The mc who is intelligent and a bit of an oddball, imo, technology), Sae (Nick’s very smart sister), and Rashi (smart and fun friend of Nick)- it was already enough for me to know how close they are from their passion of tech, which feels their friendship quite natural. And it seems their personality will be put to the test when they would put themselves in a hard situation later on.
