Description

For millennia, The Elders gifted pre-technological civilizations with a piece of technology that allows them to transcend the bounds of what is normally possible: The Implant.

Altering reality on a quantum level, creatures with an Implant can gain extraordinary physical and mental abilities. In return, the Elders require wearers of the implant to pass through the Gauntlets - Entire worlds that have been hollowed out and turned into a training and testing ground for the wearers. Once their trial is complete, the wearers then are used by the Elders as their foot soldiers as they expand across the galaxy.

And oh boy is it a good one!
There's a whole subreddit out there for novels like this if you are interested in more. Here:
Spellgun is INSANE. One of my favourites here on RR. The only downside is that paradigmblue is a slow writer and so updates are a long ways apart. But hey you can't rush genius right?
Stop reading this review and jump into this wild tale of a zero to slightly better zero ;)
Thanks again for the wonderful story paradigmblue, you're cool.

From the very start the character is likeable and believable. There is even reasons given as to why a seemingly 'normal' human can mentally overcome these things.

I didn't expect such a gem when your fiction catched my eye among the neverending mass of works here on royal road. It's still in its early stages but it has everything it needs to be a marvel. I am rarely this enthusiastic about novels, especially ones still in the making, but I wanted to let you know that this thing that you're doing is being greatly appretiated.
You have a duty, especially to yourself, to take this fiction to complextion and to publish it. Well done and keep this up!

First let me say that I found this to be one of the most intersting concepts that I've found on this site. An advanced civilization using technology to make the lower class view them as gods is coming to attack humanity? Absolutely amazing.
However, what I fear is that the story moves relatively slowly per chapter. This, combined with infrequent updates, means that not only is it possible to be a bit lost whenever there is an update, but also that the story may move at such a slow pace as to lose the interest of readers. It's an amazing setup, but it seems like it will take a long time to come to fruition.

Interesting take on the genre. My only issue is the character is portrayed as a mentally unstable and weak by crying, screaming/yelling, suicidal even. But, he is supposed to be a a trained combat vet. The inconsistencies almost made me stop reading. I will say the story gets better and I like the slow skill build up and the measured realizations. Hope the story continues.

Personally, I think this is one of the most unique ideas Ive ever seen, ever. The writing is great and the storyline is realistic, which is one of the things that separates great stories and bad stories. Personally, I think the progression speed is okay, but the release speed is, well, a bit slow. Just saying.

no OP archmage gaining rpg powers here, no hero starting off with some ridiculous starting ability
just a dude, in a cave, going all survivalist with the rpg system
first two chapters are excellent and all you need to read to realise this is some really good stuff, really sets the tone of the following chapters as well
paul is my kind of main character, the actual regular ass guy with regular ass thoughts reacting like a regular ass person
no brooding emo angst fest here who somehow is a super genius for no reason, maybe im just sick of the regular quality on this site and seeing someone break the mediocre mold with a really enjoyable character reminds me of that

This story presents a somewhat unique take on the "portal fantasy" genre where a regular ol' human is transported to somewhere where they can obtain skills and such. Really, it's a well-written story with an interesting system but it's very likely that the author has abandoned this. As such, if you're bored and want to read something, this does nicely and is entertaining, but it will leave you frustrated as there's no conclusion and the story stops too soon.
    2 stars because it's dead.

Some grammar problems, such as tenses, structuring and punctuation. They're not so frequent, and can be overlooked. The first dozen chapters kinda feel like an extended prologue... Too much of the character in his own head, too much exploring. You do get a late explanation of how he got to be where he is, and there are new elements being introduced, but they don't do much to alleviate the sameness of it all for me. There were a couple perspective switches, which was interesting. At this point I already skimmed more than read the story, so it's likely that I'll drop it.
