- shazzanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am thoroughly enjoying this. It is well written and engaging. Good world building, great main character I actually like, and a story that feels like it's building to something. It's all very imaginative and the characters feel real, and don't fall into cartoonish tropes. Looks like this could end up being pretty high on my must read list for RR.
- CT JohnsonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall
The story is off to a strong start that paints a clear picture of progression with great details. The author pays clear attention to detail and balances the progression of the story with the imagery needed to make the world feel alive.
Style
The scenery and the setting are vivid and really captivate the reader. The naming scheme and the setting are really fun and I look forward to seeing what more the author has to offer. One of favorite things about this fiction so far is how thematic it is.
Story
The story itself starts out strong as it paints very clear pictures with excellent details that doesn't bog down the story at all. Every reveal leads to another mystery as the world continues to grow.d
Grammar
I didn't notice anything wrong with the grammar, and the sentence structures were clear and concise. I always understood where I was while reading and it had a smooth progression.
Character
The characters are all fun and enjoyable. While not thoroughly explored yet they all promise to be full of their own stories which is exciting.
All together I have had a great time reading this and it has earned my follow. - MontenegroRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Soulforger is captivating from the start, pulling readers through each twist in Braxon's story. The characters are vivid and enhance the story immensely, giving it an unpredictable pace that keeps you gripped. There is tension and conflict throughout the narrative that ramps up to add even more emotion.
Moreover, unlike other works in this genre, the protagonist isn't attempting to avenge some mysterious past event but instead focuses on trying to discover the secrets of his forgotten memories and the mysteries of his new world.
The magic system is also smartly thought out. There is a mystifying air around the cultivation methods, spiritual treasures as well as realms only made accessible when certain criteria are met. As such, Soulforger is a great pick for anyone who likes something magical, action-packed with a unique take on the cultivation genre.
It brings a new flavor to what may otherwise be deemed 'the same ol' same ol'if you will.
In conclusion, no traditional tropes such as face-slapping and harems characteristic of the genre can be found, thankfully. Instead the author weaves an entrancing tale with science-fiction concepts providing unique insight into Braxon's journey between what once was and what he is now. - Mr003Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is about an engineer from a futuristic world who finds himself transported to a new world of cultivation after an incident with experimental technology. What makes this story stand out is the focus on research, and how the author avoids the typical trope of the main character turning into a crazy killer. The magic system is also quite unique, and it's clear that the author put a lot of thought into it. Overall, I'd definitely recommend
- UpsetLobsterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An incredible setting, interesting characters and good prose.
But what truly sets this appart is the attention paid to the practical process of cultivation, of understanding how it all works and seeking enlightenment.
And it pays off! Maybe you could say progress is a bit quick, but considering who the MC is, it does not feel inappropriate.
The vivid pictures of the mechanics of cultivation is something that always drew me to certain badly translated Chinese novels, trying to read past the bad language to find those moments of pure creativity. Sadly, those are few and far between in western cultivation novels, where vague and generic descriptions of qi just don't satisfy the hunger for reading about cool magic.
This book has it all in spades, read it, it is amazing. - drandreasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great start. I love the world and lore as well as the magic and cultivation systems in place. Plenty of action and intrigue. While I agree the author could have done better with some minor things such as recaps and the summary, the overall book is great. No matter what comes next I look forward to reading it.
- CimmerianRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This completed writing is one arc of a yet (as of the time of this review) unfinished story. I started reading expecting LitRPG, but was surprised to find a well written wuxia-style cultivation story with a science-futuristic slant. Overall, I enjoyed most of the story, though not the ending of the arc; that said, the author set it up perfectly and it logically fit into the story quite well.
Style: Power-scaling in the cultivation novel is a bit insane. I enjoy wuxia, but for those who are not into that genre, this novel would be a bit over-the-top. Typical wuxia, complete with Asian fictionalized honorifics, entitled young masters, ridiculous face-slapping (insults), etc.
Characters: Other than the MC and MC2, a bit 2-dimensional. The MC is a typical overpowered "apply science to cultivation" trope character, but decently done. Not ridiculously bloodthirsty, even though the world is bloodthirsty (per the realities of that universe and genre norms).
Grammar: Fine, not perfect.
Overall, I found myself wanting to read more of this story, because of how the author ended things in the last several chapters; it is definitely an unfinished story, despite having the "completed" title; as of this review, the author hasn't continued writing additional chapters, so based on that I can't recommend the story for someone who is looking for a complete story. For what it is, it is well-written and moderately unique. - AnotherAvidReadeeRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Story isn't finished (you learn at the end that it's only book 1 and no book 2 to this date). Title should warn with "Book 1".
Progression is weird with and I believe not really sustainable. Reason why I don't really ever expect this story to be finished ever.
Could have been a really nice novel tough the concept was interesting. - GaskRoyal Road★★★ 2.5I enjoyed the beginning of this story as it actually weaved the origins of the main character into the plot beyond the usual, throw away iseki premise. There was potential for a slow burn, character driven story to emerge but unfortunately for me that wasn't to be. If you're not looking for that but instead love an ever escalating power fantasy then ignore my review and enjoy.
Once past the introduction I began to notice a shift in tone and direction from mystery/uncertainty to rapid power acquisition and the trivialization of the world.
The period of Kai's vulnerability in his new word is cut rather short (days) and the relationships he forms during this time prove meaningless, only the nature of his origin matters. For soon enough the setting changes and he is transformed into a rapidly growing godling.
In the period of a few hours + a minor time skip he goes from killing himself out of ignorance to mastery over life, death and the material world. Also nanobot drone swarms.
It's the usual over the top series of progressive escalations that you'll have seen in other stories of this type.
Now obviously this is a xianxia and OP is to be tolerated more often than not but this was especially difficult for me in this case. As the story moves along the perspective of the main character quickly shifts into something more akin to the musings of an AI rather than a human being. You'll often find yourself subjected to lengthy sci-fi/fantasy blend theory crafting sessions which are used to justify Kai's Godlike power acquisitions. This also produced the unfortunate side effect of destroying any narrative tension and reducing the story down to a verbose but ultimately hand wavy mechanical exercise, for at the end of the day the line always goes up.
But that aside the story is quite readable and the author possesses the technical skill to produce something more memorable if only he could pace himself a bit better. - PlowmanPlowRoyal Road★ 1.0Strike the review below. I cannot recommend this "book". Imagine reading a novel where the world building is interesting, and you grow attached to characters, specifically the MC. Then, at the very end of the book introduce pointless cruelty that is not at all consistent with the rest of the book and annihilate everything that was carefully built. That is this book.
One of the most ludicrous slaps in the face to readers I've ever experienced (in literally thousands of books). It's like the most juvenile of pranks where the the author jumps out and yells, "Gotcha!" but is the only one in on the joke.
********
For me, cultivation novels are often hit or miss. I very much like the feel of this advanced sci-fi MC inhabiting a young master's body and using the scientific method to learn about the world around him.
There are a couple times I detected a tiny bit of plot armor for the MC, but not enough to make me rate this any less than five stars. If you like a fast paced narrative with a powerful but logical protagonist then you should enjoy this.
