Story 5/5: Small Medium at Large is a LitRPG that takes a more lighthearted approach to the genre than the few that I have read. It is a PI with an interesting quirk to the main character, which is the main character shares their headspace with two other entities, making for some interesting internal banter.
Style 4.5/5: Like many good PI stories, Small Medium at Large is told in the first-person narrative. Something that I feel suits the story. It is listed as a LitRPG, and they talk about classes and levels, but there are no stat sheets thus far, and for me, it is a huge bonus because I often feel pulled out of a story when I see a massive stat sheet pop up, making my experience disjointed. So far, Small Medium at Large kept me engaged but let me know it was LitRPG without overselling it. Like I said before, Molly shares headspace with two other characters, Frank and Coco. I love the concept. However, I did feel a bit lost about who was commenting and who was not at times.
Grammar 5/5: I did not notice any mistakes or typos and thought it was edited nicely and well-written.
Character 5/5: Molly is a fun and confident MC, and the supporting cast all seem very different than Molly, making their interactions feel fresh. I also suspect they are so used to their arrangement that they regard each other as family and interact much as siblings do. (I could be wrong about this.)
Overall 5/5: Small Medium at Large is a fresh look at an investigative story in a LitRPG world that is witty and lighthearted. I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here. - Evelyn AdelbergRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Female MC ? Check. Rare and slightly weird class ? Check. Crime and mysteries ? Check.
This story is a nice mix between LitRPG and Crime stories. The fact that the MC can communicate with spirits adds a whole new dimension of possibilities for the author to play around with (What if a murder victim could point to their killer ? What is the house resident ghost saw a thief who'd broken in ?). I simply love this concept.
What I didn't love as much, however, is the MC, Molly. I found her a bit "distracted" and "incompetent" to put it nicely. Basically I don't think she shouldn't be doing the job she does. But I think that's intentional on the author's part, as the only way for Molly to go is up (character development wise).
The other two main characters are more up my alley. I relate to Coco and her perv mind on a personal level, and Frank sounds like the kind of guy who lives (and died) by the motto YOLO.
The grammar and style are both very smooth, and do a great job at setting the pace for this story. I even learned a new word or two, when Molly entered that mansion XD
Oh, and the little "excerpts" at the start of each chapter are a blast to read through.
TLDR: this is a story for those who like a good mixture of contemporary elements and LitRPG. It's also a story for fans of crime solving and goofy ghosts. Is that sounds like your cup of tea, give this story a shot !
