Sidonian Vigor

Description

The Sidonian Empire stands with pride to spite and take vengeance, in the name of its leader, the Lady Sidonia. Alisson Vi Nuam and Celistine Regadonia; the master and the apprentice, although meek, must push outside their boundaries if they wish to survive, and aid their fellow comrades in victory. Victory however, means victory against the entire world. Sidonian forces are of course higher quality than the rest of the human scum on the continent, but quality over quantity can only get you so far when you’re outnumbered by such a large factor.

Decrepit beasts roam the tunnels under the ground, and humans are all too happy to squash another subhuman nation such as Sidonia. With a sudden surprise attack launched on Sidonia, and war being declared, it’s only a matter of time until the vastly larger human armies march down the continent and overwhelm the speck at the bottom of the map that is Sidonia.

However, the orders Alisson receives one fateful day may be the key to his species survival, or an elaborate way of saying ‘die’. Either way, orders are orders, and even if the Lady Sidonia did tell him to take his own life, he would do so in a heartbeat, as would any Sidonian as Alisson could imagine. This sentiment however, unbeknownst to Alisson, is subject to change, especially when he receives a brand-new apprentice to follow him everywhere. She may prove yet to be Alisson’s first real friend. Because what's a better method of bonding than being hunted by both human and monster alike?

Updates sparsely every couple weeks; this is a hobby, not my jobby :) Takes inspiration from everything from Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukovsky to the Spice and Wolf series by Isuna Hasekura. The main characters are not overly powerful, there is no cultivation, and there are no levels. The world isn't defined or spoonfed to the reader, and care has been taken to make sure every character seems human, no matter their importance to the plot.

This entire story is well written and am honestly surprised that there haven't been any other reviews posted yet. As I've put in my review title I think the plot was quite intriguing and throughout my read I found the entire story had promise, promise of a great story. I would reccomand this to everyone to at least tryout the first couple chapters and see if it's to your liking. Personally for me, I like it quite a bit.

If you have come here just to read a romance, than I am afraid this story is not for you. If you are here to read action/horror with sweet romance somehow successfully snuck in between, then this is probably for you. I would warn people in advance however: this story is not for the fainthearted. There are scenes of brutality and cruelty which strike at the soul. It isn't without purpose however.
The writing isn't the best to begin with, but clearly improves over time as the author gains experience. The world and characters become much richer over time as a consequence, and really come to engage the reader. The author comes up with truly unique ideas as well.
Story: The overall plot of the story is exciting, and there is an exciting mystery to the world that is sustained throughout the entire story, which is remarkable of itself. You never know who will live or die.
Character: Main characters are well developed, and have a depth to their personality. The secondary characters are not cardboard cutouts, and have their own personality quirks, the reasons for some of which are ultimately unresolved due to untimely deaths, leaving surviving characters (and the audience) with questions as to their motivations and so on. I would applaude this however, as it adds a sense of realism to the story which one would not find in others.
Style: Mostly good, but some of the fighting scenes and so on tend to drag, due to a lot of description. Generally improves over time.
Grammar: Mostly good, but there are errors on occasion which forced me to pause and work out what the author meant.
This work is ultimately not for everyone, but I myself personally enjoyed it.

This review will contain two sections; one section with(mild)out spoilers, and conversely, another with spoilers. You are advised to skip the first section if you are reading this having already read Sidonian Vigor.
Having been written over the span of over three years, including rewrites of a select number of chapters, Sidonian Vigor (SV) is by no means written by an author with the intent to have made content at a rate satisfactory for a normal reader. SV was written by a hobbyist, not by someone trying to produce something professional and presentable for a large audience. This can be seen in the evolution of the writer's style spanning the novel, the abstraction of content and the writer choosing to leave more open ends further into SV- sometimes to a fault. This is not to say that the later parts of this novel are matter-of-factly better than the earlier ones, as the amateurish writing still holds charm if one wishes, as I personally did.
Overall, SV is an experimental blend of romance, action and world-building which may or may not be enjoyable for every reader. It's amateurish at times, it's unrefined, passionate and unapologetic, which is what makes SV, SV. If you're willing to put in the time and energy into reading a passion project about a relationship of a master and apprentice evolving into two lovers, SV may be the right read for you.
This section of the review contains spoilers for the entirety of SV. Reader discretion is strongly advised before reading the contents of this section.
