- NiksolRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A wonderfull combination of high action space opera, slow building space 4X, and a girl new to the world and making a place to belong. At the same time, in the background, we get glimpses of world that is darker and more dystopic than a first glance. And there is even a small progressions system added to the mix.
The main character is believably young and idealistic, but switch to competant space ship commander when story calls for it, while her XO is, eventually, the caring older sister. Their dynamic is cute and engagning.
I am looking forward to see the list of characters expand and to see more of this this universe.
Followed, favourited, and hoping to be reading uppdates for a long time. - MoyraRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Other ship girl stories quickly loose their appeal as they degenerate into silliness. This has some of the light-hearted slice of life feel, but seems more mature. Characters are very real believable and fleshed out.
Usually in this premise you feel that everything is leaning towards comic relief and fast paced. This is more mysterious even though you have many clues that the character doesn't you're left guessing. It's very interesting and the slower pace is refreshing.
The only reason I can think that this story hasn't garnered a lot of interest is that people already have preconceived expectations.
Author's oftentimes give oversized information dumps and wall after wall of text that don't contribute to the present pace of the story. Lucky we don't see that here it's nice to see her progress with limited information.
I like that the character has to work and everything isn't just taken care of by nano bots and automations.
It's also nice to see that they aren't overly trusting of each other. One character has been betrayed and the other is a blank slate. She is treated like a renewable resource and the scary part is that she maybe one. There's some evidence of her not being the first or even second ship core.
Come and read you won't be disappointed! - NarilRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like this story. The grammar is excellent, the quality is high, and the premise is interesting. Nanites and shipgirls. Very fun. That being said, it took me several acts to parse what kind of story it was.
In Act I, at first, I thought ShipCore was going for a mix of hard and soft sci-fi, which I really enjoyed. Act I was one of the most fun sci-fi stories I've read in ages. Give it a read. Act I alone is worth it. Erios909 is a really talented author, in my opinion. I like their work. Strong recommend. Be aware that hard sci-fi is NOT what this is, though. As of Act III, my take is that this definitely more of a coming of age drama/slice of life story in a sci-fi setting.
There'll be lots of spoilers from here, and my attempt at constructive criticism for the author. I'll tag the first few, but no more. Read no further if you wish to remain spoiler free.
Act I
Drifting through an ancient battlefield in a derelict ship, at constant risk of destruction from scattered debris, scavenging anything and everything for materials. Fighting loneliness and isolation. Going crazy with cabin fever, with your only company being a POW and dependent on a near psychotic AI with mysterious motives.
Act I was AMAZING. Just absolutely phenomenal.
Act 2 started out really strong too.
Reaching human space. Disguising their ship's insane, terrifying capabilities. Starting a mining/construction operation, all with some heavy drama and space politics on top. A very intense arc. I liked this a lot. Loads of fun. I have no criticism for act I.
Act II was a lot of fun at first. Even when there were parts I was frustrated with. I liked the setup to absolute disaster. Honestly, I was concerned whether it would be followed up on, but it was.
Act II is where I started to get a bit frustrated with Alex and Elis, but I must admit that Alex was entirely in character and that was fine. Alex's decisions make sense for her - she's young and naive. Not even a single year old, but Elis was a sol - AaradurRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am someone for whom SciFi tends to b kind of hit-or-miss, and this was a definite hit. In particular, I found the setting to be extremely compelling (and somewhat remniscent of a game called Starsector I used to play).
Another big positive for me was the combat, which really worked into the space angles of distances, different weapon types, missile salvos etc. to be some of the best space combat ive read in a long time. I also always felt like both sides in a given engagement were strategizing competently, which is a big plus.
The pacing of the story I really liked, it is very variable depending on what is going on. Parts are more slow paced, as Alex gets her bearings or focuses on industrializing her base, while others are extremely fast paced strategic combat and warfare. I like that variability a lot, and think it does a lot for immersion, though others might feel differently.
The characters are well written too, not quite as amazing IMO as the other aspects ive mentioned above, but still quite good.
All in all, if you like SciFi stories, especially ones with a lot of strategic combat, then I highly recommend ShipCore. I certainly have enjoyed it so far! - ElmvreyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has good plot, update speed, and feels thought out.
No grammer issues, No excessive plot armor for the FL, but
she develops with the threat of tragedy, and while some are not temporary, they aren't permanent either, so it does seem like they are killing people off for the sake of
plot.
Nice story, appreciate reading it. very fews stories on RR manage to produce story that feels as well thought out as yours with even half of the same themes\plot points, net alone a story that ties back to proir events without having the plot move like a wheel. Plot placement is good, and new characters are not forgotten, but instead get some screen time dedicated to them, not just purely when interacting with the MC
98/100 overall
10/10 would reccomend - Avid reader TimRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was shocked at how the twists and turn this story has maintained. One chapter you may be starting to lose interest then hooked back in as a new twist comes along. The next thing you know a character from another part of the galaxy is coming into the story with another twist. When the main character and the new one meet you know fireworks are coming. Keep up the creativity and look forward to what else you may come up with. Wonder what type of new ship the main character is going to get. Small sleek and fast or a big brute of a thing.
- Goblin_KunRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An amazing read - I always smile when i see a new chapter pop up.
I love the characters and their quirks.
The AI generated art is a nice touch to the story line, quite nice to see those pop up.
Can tell the Author puts in good work into this story. - CaptainLoserRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a really good story that is fun and fils me up with exitment and a sense of adventure I also is the first Sifi in a while to get me hooked it don't even need space magic it just makes it fun my only issue is I found it to early so now I need to wait for updates and the like
- KrakeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Picked this story up because I needed a change of pace. First chapter promised a bit of mystery and some hard sci-fi action, so I gave it a read. The first volume (I am reviewing at the end of A1) is what I would call a task solving story. Long series of things need to be done in order to survive. MC lines them up and works through the list, gradually establishing her capabilities and options while learning the lore of the setting. The pacing keeps up well, the prose is clear and flows. The character dynamic between MC and her friend has room for improvement, but that's really not why I read the first volume anyway.
Overall, I liked it. - SoldierRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Semi-serious story that feel quite fun seeing the heroine building up in a new world, what I loved the most was how the ship battles were portrayed with clear sequences, possibilities and counter (and counters to counters) at different ranges.
Its a slow build but doesnt feel stagnating in the slightest, would recommend to anyone liking SF and isekais (even if its not an isekai but the "new and unknown world" feel similar)
