- Matt FusionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While reading this I can say that everything the author said about this book is very true. You would think shonen got up and started writing novels. But seriously the book is very good and if you like manga, anime or magical elements this book is a banger and would make a an exemplary read.
Style: The prose was pretty solid in my opinion, though some parts were a little peculiar, not in a bad way though. It's still fun and easy to read. I have no complaints here. It's mostly in 3rd person view btw so that's a plus as well.
Grammer: The grammer police need not be summoned here. I haven't spotted any glaring mistakes or errors worth pointing out. There isn't anything that would deter your read.
Story: The story is a rather interesting one. There are parts that remind you of other shonen works but also I've seen some unique things that stood out to me, which I think others will also find interesting as they read. It follows the dude gets super powers theme, which we all know and love. There are some sub plots in there different from the main plot, but they are also as fun to read in my opinion given the characters are able to carry the storied on their own.
Characters: Okay, so any anime fan out there would have a ball reading these characters. If you are an anime you'd be amazed to find the similarities a lot of these characters and the shonen ones. The writer has a good handle on the character voices as even without name introduction you are able to distinguish who is who. I like that each character has their own personality and aren't some washed up cardboard copy of each ohter like some others I've read.
This book has a lot of potential, and I strongly believe that especially anime fans will be head over heels for this book. It's a good read. Why not give it a try, you just might love it. - Antares905Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Shift is a shounen action story that is a rarity here in Royal Road. From the day I started reading until now, it's given me some laughs and there were times I read at the edge of my seat.
Style: I'm never lost on what's going on and nothing feels repetitive despite the number of shounen anime I watched in my lifetime. We start right with the action and the pacing stays consistently steady onwards. I personally appreciate the balance between downtime and action scenes. Eytha has certainly done her homework to be able to portray this story as a manga for fellow manga enjoyers with just words.
Story: A classic shounen story with a hostile political climate. Anime tropes are certainly in place, but some are subverted or outright defied. There's quite a lot of violence, but nothing earth-shattering and it sure wouldn't be shounen without it.
Grammar: Grammar mistakes are not obvious, not many, and aren't really a dealbreaker for me.
Character: A lot of the characters get their own time in the limelight, and I love Shift for that. Yuki is the main character, and this is his story. But everyone gets a turn in the spotlight, and no one gets sidelined. There's quite a bit of girl power, too. Not only that, but they are far from bland and boring; they all have their own quirks, their own hopes, and their own dreams. If Shift ever had its own anime adaptation, people would be hard pressed to vote for a single best character.
As for Yuki himself, his power doesn't feel unearned; he actually struggles on the road to become progressively adept with it, enough to frighten me with the thought of my imagination running wild if I were in his shoes.
Overall, a great story. Royal Road has some decent anime-themed stories, but Shift stands at the top in my opinion. - Sacred-FireRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Feels like watching anime.
That is exactly what the author was going for, and it worked perfectly.
The style very much reflects the authors intention to create a written Shonen battle show. It is quick paced and punchy with characters that are easy to appreciate and themes that are easy to get into. We get into the fighting very quickly, and that is where the authors strongest skill comes to shine. The battles feel very good to read, because the descriptions of action allow the readers to follow the flow of battle smoothly.
The grammar seemed fine, there was nothing flashy about the prose, but that is of course not the point of the book.
The story, in so far as I have read, is a good blend of Shonen and progression fantasy. We get to follow the MC as they come to terms with their new powers and are forced to grow as characters to face a quickly escalating range of challenges.
The characters very much reflect their Shonen theme. There are lots of anime tropes that most people will recognise quickly, childhood friend, tsundere, teacher/enemy. You might be thinking thats not a good thing, but in this case the easily recognisable character patterns allow us to get into the action faster. The author clearly knows what they are doing with their characterisation.
Overall im very impressed, Eytha has obviously done a lot of work on this story, and it shows. Anyone who enjoys the genre is going to find it entertaining, and im sure this story has a bright future ahead of it on RR - realnotperfectOfficialRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Like I always say, I am not a Master of Editing with five thousand (or even five) degrees; these are only my humble opinions!
This type of style and genre was very new for me; I had never read, specifically, a "Shounen" story before. Here are my personal observations.
1) I loved how well the third-person perspective was executed. For me, there was a good balance of conveying what the main character was trying to do- without necessarily telling readers what exactly they were feeling or thinking- and I think this balance was also done well when other characters were introduced.
2) One of the things I loved was the description of how characters navigated from one place to another, and where these places were. Yes, physically, from point A to point B. Eytha (the author) did a number of things very well here for someone who was totally new to this entire genre, and this was one of the things that really helped to keep me grounded in the book and its story; helped to keep me following the main and important characters.
3) One of the many talents and strengths of this author is how they appeal to exactly the audience (I imagine!) they wanted to appeal to.
Note that my personal style, and my personal favorite stories, are written so differently from how this author presented everything in this book. But I can also see how many people would like this style!
4) The writing was done exceptionally well with very minimal errors. At the same time, I personally felt as though the book was almost mirroring or imitating (sometimes a bit too much) a specific existing story. This is just what I personally felt.
5) I think I noticed that some commas- where they were really needed- were missing. (I am absolutely no better at this facet of writing. I make plenty of mistakes, I have definitely had errors, and I also miss commas.) This was a very minor nuisance that did not detract from the good qualities of the author.
In conclusion:
A wonderful read. This book is a great one of its style
