Shapeshifter [Old Version]

Description
Xen is not your average Joe. In fact, he isn't even Joe. He just looks and acts like the newbie Hunter who died a horrible death in one of the many beginner dungeons that have littered the Earth since the System's arrival decades ago.
But what really lies beneath the human skinsuit once known as Joe is Xen the Mind Slime—a Shapeshifter.
Armed with the appearance and knowledge of the dead Hunter, Xen sets out to acquire new monstrous forms and abilities, all the while blending in with the other Hunters who seek to kill his own kind.
Think solo leveling but from a monster perspective.

This is now in the #1 story I'm following in terms of eagerness to get the next chapter. You know, when you log in to your follow list, and there are half a dozen or a dozen new chapters, and you're going to choose the one you read first ... this is now THAT story for me.
Style: The writing gives you just the right information to
- establish an aspect of the world
- the character's relationship in it
- and the character's relationship to it.
It draws me in and guides me along in a way that I find effortless. Often, even with stories i like, I find myself excusing the author for taking me down tangents that don't forward my experience of the story. In this one, I am just completely on the ride.
Grammar: nothing has drawn my attention away from the story. That's all I care about personally.
Story: the basic idea of the story and the speed at which the plot is unfolding has me completely hooked. I am rooting for the main character. I am accepting the moral ambiguities And looking forward 2 how they will violate my expectations because I can bet it is going to be in provocative and pleasurable ways. And I see so much potential for what this story can become. It also helps that I trust that the author can create a long term and complex interplay of characters and powers, because I am so hopeful about what this story could be.
Characters: How did I ccme to care about a slime so quickly? To want it to succeed even though it grows and feeds in the way that it grows and feeds, I don't know, but I'm glad. Of course, I can't help but find similarities between this particular shapeshifter and some other doppelganger that was given low-mental birth in a dungeon, but I can say that the MC's personality is tasty. - Drav TauronRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This has been a super fun read so far. I'm enjoying the anti-hero twist on the LitRPG genre. The main character's inner monologue is often cynical and funny. The author has foreshadowed a lot of intriguing directions that this story may go, I can't wait for more. Great job and keep it coming!
- Fost_NZRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reading up to chapter 9 (all that was posted) I'm enjoying the way the author is able to write a none-human MC and convey how alien being a person would be. The level of threat the initial situation poses to the MC really makes you worry for them, and the solution the MC uses is creative use of their abilities. I like a smart MC and this one is written well, even with the drawback of starting as a slime. The idea itself is very interesting and even so soon ito the story, I can tell the worldbuilding is going to be something I want to know more about, as the glimpses of what is out there is fascinating.
Like the author's other work, the story telling, grammar and pacing is top-notch, so this is another of Xkarnation's stories I am definitely looking forward to reading.
I strongly recommend you to read this, I doubt you will be disappointed - Hunter13Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started reading with the expectation of another isekai slime with a human mind gaining unlimited power in another world, instead it's just a bottom of the barrel slime monster that is invading earth, who just so happens to have a chance at unlimited power.
I can't wait for more chapters. - ghost_of_hotsauseRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is everything I want in a shapeshifter story awkward adaption to new forms, not understanding what weird things the shapeshifter is doing, etc… but so far I am in love with Xen with his? Fun personality quirks. How the system stats work is also a nice deviation from normal with the multiple levels that Xen has to manage.
- raiiningRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really enjoying this so far! Interesting chapters and great monster pov. Quick leveling and lots of neat options. Definitely a lot of possibilities going forward. I’m curious to see where it develops and definitely along for the ride! Absolutely going to be looking for more monster POV’s since I’m enjoying this one so much.
- DisillusionedAcronymRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0a good start to a story with an interesting premise. it feels well-written and, as far as i can tell, cleanly written and edited.
this might sound weird but bear with me: MC is "dumb" but in an understandable and not in a bad way. it's "dumb" because it's essentially a newborn and doesn't know better. it IS actively trying to learn (rather than just being dumb to create conflicts so plot armour can rescue an MC). we (as audience and observer) might agree or disagree with the choices made but those choices were made with reasons and to the extent of knowledge that MC possess. that's a hard write, in my opinion, and i think the author has, so far, done a pretty darn good job with it.
definitely recommended, if you don't mind a monster main and/or an "anti"-hero (who isn't trying to be bad or edgy, just survive). - ProcrustiesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far a great start to what seems to be a fun monster MC story-- looking forward to seeing the growth continue as the author builds on the system and how progression will look for this power system. So far so fun!
If you like monster MC stories this author does them well! - ghastlyshadeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoyed reading this book it’s one of the best non- human books on royal road that

it embodies the concept of not being human quite well has good and fun mechanics and is all around enjoyable - VoadraiderRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Solid start to a hopefully solid story. Who knows, maybe this will be the next Everybody loves large chests.
Could do with a bit of tidying in the character sheets, maybe some spoilers? Im sure itll work out as the author moves on with the story.
