Description

[ Luxury Planetoid Serenity ]

The greatest vessel ever made by mankind.

She was a hundred miles in diameter, fitted with every luxury and necessity known to man, as well as the machines necessary to produce them from the bounties of space. However, not a single weapon was allowed to mar her sheer metallic surface.

Instead she was accompanied by a massive fleet of warships. It was to be a parade, after all. A show of peace to end a hundred cycles of conflict between the Orion Spur's greatest factions; the Empire, Federation and the Union. Descendants of the Great Gaian Dominion.

However, she, her escorts, and the seven hundred thousand souls aboard them all, never arrived at their first destination. Nor did they ever return.

We begin the story with one of her many passengers, Guila, an Imperial noblewoman with a sordid and bloody past that haunts her even on this auspicious day.  But as someone who's never faltered in her decisions, nor shown any regret, she's remained steadfast despite the public derision that she has to endure. Helped greatly by her husband, the man she'd devoted her all, and the man who'd given her everything she wished.

However, today, less than a year after their marriage, might as well be the day that all crumbled down. Her replacement had arrived—but maybe, just maybe, Guila could turn it all around. What does fate have in store for her and the other passengers of Serenity, and why were they never found?

Expect a story with multiple perspectives, focusing on their emotional development, just as much as it tackles their physical and mental growth. How they form and malform relationships, and how their desires affect all those around them. Action, drama, and politics go hand in hand, as they navigate the beautiful world that awaits them, and the horrors within.New Chapters will be posted every Saturday (GMT+8).

The best thing about this story is the characters. All of the characters feel believable, taking whatever actions their personality dictates rather than plot. None of the characters fall into the trap of feeling generic- and in fact, one of the characters in particular initially comes across as unlikeable. But even when she feels unlikeable, she feels so in a well-written way that feels REAL. And she doesn't stay as a static hate sink, instead proving to be a messy, fully-formed person, with all the complications that entails. The other characters in the story, though they haven't received the attention this character has, brim with similar promise. The more we see of them, the more facets of their personalities are revealed, with none of those facets feeling contradictory to what was already shown. And that's not even counting how, despite the plot clearly just starting up, there has already been believable character development and shifting inter-character interactions. The reader is left constantly wanting to see just how the characters act next. This is not just so as to better understand them, but also to see how these characters interact with each other- and possibly even change.
Surrounding the characters is an action-packed plot taking the form of a spacefaring political drama that was interrupted by an attack from unknown forces. At first the political drama is difficult to understand, given its impacts are shown without initially giving the readers full understanding of the core elements. As the story progresses, those core elements start to get slowly teased out, but the way it is written makes it somewhat difficult to follow. The difficulty parsing these elements so central to much of the plot and character backstories is a tad frustrating. By the time we finally get an info dump on it, I'm not sure whether to be relieved, or wondering if there was any point on hiding the information so long.
Of course, that's just for the political drama aspect of thing

I breezed through this rapidly, a blessing and a hindrance. The author writes well, and I found the MC's inner conflict enjoyable as it's peppered with light sci-fi things. A big part of me, and I think this is strictly a "me" problem, is I wish the world itself were delved into more. I have so many questions, which is good, but very little has been forthcoming, which isn't bad per se, but after eight or so chapters, I'd expect some insight into how the world works.
What is there is interesting, however, and it's ongoing, so there is much room for growth.
One final thing, I was enjoying everything leading up to the "retcon"; I'm not sure how I feel about those chapters. They do stop the momentum dead.
Give this a try; you may find it more your cup of tea.
Edit 11/02/22 Author made some changes post feedback so I felt it fair to amend my rating since it does indeed improve things imo.
