Seed of a Rift Tyrant [LitMOBA]
Community Rating
Description
The Via Sanguinis flows once more as the 8th Tyrant storms the Erulean Senate. Unaware of the event, Palinus is scavenging through piles of rubbish in the opulent city of Erulea. His secretive search for valuables among the refuse is interrupted and his life is thrown into chaos as he is drawn into a whirlwind of youthful hooliganry—who could resist the allure of wine and explosions?
As the Second Empire enters a new era, Palinus faces a crucial choice: will he honour his promise to escape the capital's corruption, or will the seductive power offered by the rifts’ essentia pull him into the perpetual conflict of the underworld?
The Seed of the Tyrant is a litMOBA / GameLit / LitRPG progression fantasy with an ancient Roman flavour where the powers of the underworld are in a constant battle to control the flow of essentia, the ultimate source of power. There is a unique system for magic and abilities that draws inspiration from RGB colour wheels, MOBA style meta progression and the politics of the Roman Empire.

- Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0"Seed of the Rift Tyrant" presents an intriguing premise, blending elements of LitRPG, GameLit, and MOBA into a unique fantasy setting. The ancient Roman flavor and the unique magic system, inspired by RGB color wheels and MOBA mechanics, offer a fresh perspective on the genre.
Character Development and World-Building
The character of Palinus, a scavenger thrust into a world of intrigue and power, has potential for compelling development. His journey from the margins of society to the heart of the conflict could be a fascinating exploration of moral ambiguity and the corrupting influence of power.
The world-building, with its emphasis on the struggle for control over essentia and the political machinations of the Second Empire, offers a rich backdrop for the story. The Roman-inspired setting adds a layer of historical depth and provides opportunities for epic battles and political intrigue.
ACTION!
This book is a non-stop thrill ride! Once the action kicks off, it keeps going at full speed. The diverse cast of characters is vividly drawn, with each one standing out uniquely. I was particularly impressed by the author's skill in making me care about a character I initially disliked—such quick and effective character development!
The dialogue is sharp, engaging, and a joy to read. The prose flows swiftly and is easy to digest, yet the author still crafts vivid imagery with their words. Plus, the pacing is tight and exhilarating throughout.
Overall
"Seed of the Rift Tyrant" has the potential to be a captivating and innovative story. With careful attention to character development, pacing, and world-building, it could become a standout in the LitRPG genre. - Century boyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
The story takes place in a Roman style fantasy world, filled with a rich history and unique mechanics. The writing is refreshing and fluid, yet not too complex and hard to follow. The Roman themed society is breath of fresh air from the usual vaguely medieval European themed worlds of most gamelit novels. The world is vivid and described in a way that conveys its characters without being too complex or jarring.
Story:
The story hasn’t unraveled too much so far. The Mc Palinus and his two sort of friends make for likeable characters and their crappy living conditions make them quite sympathetic. The world is a breath of fresh air, the concept of rifts as being these kind of sentient beings that pull people inside of them to basically play death games to increase their stats is a fascinating concept and one i haven’t seen before.
Grammer:
Simply perfect.
Characters:
due to how early we are in the Story the Characters aren’t the most developed as of yet which is fine. As stated previously they are all quite likeable and manage to avoid falling into annoying tropes.
keep up the good work. This story will definitely end up being quite popular. - CoconutPirateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0My general thoughts are that it’s hard to give a really good review of this story right now. It’s early days in the story and we’re still stuck in introductions, but I think everything I have read so far has been really good. The foundation for a really good story that will come later is definitely here.
style: the author uses very descriptive words and really does a lot of “showing” which makes it a nice read. I never felt that something was inadequately explained or described. It flowed very well.
story: again we’re early days so it’s not clear what the story will look like after this inciting incident. I think the MOBA aspects are a really intriguing system of magic in the world, and the colors relating to attunement is super cool but I don’t see where it’s going right now. It’s clear that the MC is poor, but he’s in school for something, and so will he continue going into rifts for money, for fame, for mystery, or what. I think it’s good setup just right now a little open ended.
grammar: there were a couple typos here and there, but nothing insanely awful.
character: I liked the characters, they were people not just a collection of characteristics that push the story forward. The main character is a little “thin” right now, but that has more to do with the structure of the story than anything else. I believe we will learn more about Palinus as the story moves forward but even though we don’t know a lot about him we understand him. He’s poor and used to doing dirty jobs to make ends meet. He’s kind on some level, not wanting to kill some dudes. He’s a little on the naive side. I just believe it’ll get more fleshed out later.
but that’s my big thing is that this is a good foundation for a story. I think in maybe another 10/15 chapters it’ll really get moving and most of the things that I thought could be improved will be ironed out. - PathOfPenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Grammar: Not much to say here other than the fact that the author knows what they're doing and has clearly spent a ton of time polishing every sentence to make sure it's all immaculate. I haven't spotted any mistakes.
Theme: Now this is one of the areas where the book shines the most. The author promises an 'ancient Roman flavour'. In my opinion, that's a big claim. If you set your story in such a unique setting, you end up with readers who are really craving for that particular type of content, and they will definitely pick everything apart to make sure it suits their taste.
Fortunately, the book excels in doing so, as it relies on smooth prose and descriptive passages to truly breathe life into the world. It delivers the promised theme in spades, from the characters' names (Palinus, Bruchts), to the currency (denarius), the locations (Gymnasium), people's clothes (sandals) etc. Overall, the author does a great job crafting the world and immersing their readers in the experience.
Characters: All the characters are fleshed out, with distinct personalities and backgrounds. The dialogue feels natural and blends well with the narration.
Power System: Now this is the second major area where the story excels and, since it's RoyalRoad, it's probably the most important too. There are lots of LitRPGs and GameLits on this site, but not many LitMOBAs. As somebody who has played a lot of League of Legends in the past, it's truly refreshing to read a story based around similar mechanics.
As for those of you who might be unfamiliar with MOBAs - fear not - as the book explains everything clearly for the uninitiated. And who knows? Once you run out of chapters to read, you might crave yourself some MOBA xD In any case, I suggest you give the story a chance if only for the power system.
Overall: I've already said everything that needs to be said, so I'll just summarize it. Roman setting? Expertly delivered with crisp prose and descriptive passages. Characters? Realistic and relatab - R. C. VettaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wow what a wild ride this one is! Who doesn't love a good urchin to hero story. I immediately thought of the beginning to "The Lies of Locke Lamora" throughout the first couple chapters. A slow burn, that picks up after some worldbuilding
Style- third person narration hits just right with everything going on. The descriptions are vivid and sensory, which you don't always get with GameLit.
Grammar- The story had me so gripped I didn't noticed any mistakes if there are any to notice. The formatting was just right for me to read easily from one line to the next. A perfect example why an author should never be afraid of adding a line break.
Story-This feels like a tale of two stories. The first in the city running through sewers and the next hopping through a rift to a strange place of magical war games. Readers are promised magic early and should be chomping at the bit for it by the time it shows up a few chapters in, well worth the wait.
Character- The main character is accompanied by two others who act as his partners in crime despite their shaky introduction. I get a band of brothers vibe from those three. - RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style/Story:
Style: The story is told in third person and seems to follow one character's point of view making it a story to follow. For the prose wise, they seem good to me, no complaints on them. Descriptive nature of the story is pretty good, as there is enough detail in the story. For a story in its early stages, what we are given so far is pretty good, as it definitely kept me wanting to read more.
One thing I will say, just consider the effects of the coloration of the wording that is given for the LitRPG elements. Only saying this in case some is in dark mode and the colors may blend into the black screen. I didn’t see too many issues with this but that doesn’t mean others won't.
Story: The story itself is a fantasy slow burn LitRPG with some of the RPG elements being adapted into some of the later chapters. In all the story seems interesting as the story grabbed my attention. The story does contain some unique magic as it seems each character gets their own abilities. As this is a slow progression type story it will be interesting to see how the MC handles power if and when he develops it.
Grammar: The overall grammar seemed pretty good to me, so no issues here.
Characters: The characters are just beginning on their journey so there is still tons to learn about them. As each future chapter, I am interested to see them grow and develop and their histories unravel. The MC does seem pretty interesting as well as we see him grow from the base of nothing and is watching him grow into something more. I will also say, that for the time being character interactions so far seem real and nothing too far out of the ordinary, at least yet.
In Summary: With this story still in its beginning stages it is worth giving it a read as it holds promise to become a great story! - SwizzyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I mean you had me at wine and explosions! I’m really enjoying watching the characters develop and seeing how their powers evolve. I’m able to visualise what is happening as you write. I like the Ancient Roman undertone with a twist of modern magic. Awesome job at first time writing. Keen for more chapters please.
- longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review comes after reading the first seven chapters of Seed of a Rift Tyrant. I apologize for the spoilers.
Story:
Seed of a Rift Tyrant follows the MC (Palinus), a teen from the city of Erulea. He does his best to make his way in the empire while scavenging for survival. After stumbling upon a rift seed he and his companions (Rufian and Bruchts) are drawn into a dangerous new world inside a rift. Along the way, they encounter and learn from the adventurers Minucia and Marcus. Palinus faces threats and is forced to come to terms with his own fears/powers/decisions. This is a highly detailed and well thought out world, with intricate character relationships.
Style:
This story is gracefully written in third person point of view. It closely follows Palinus, but sometimes does shift to other points of view. The overall tone of the story is pretty tense (but not in a bad way, let me explain). The world that the "kids" live in is pretty dangerous, and the characters are forced to make decisions that require some moral soul searching. They are forced to take physical risks too, that really underpins the need for friendship. It's rich and so thought provoking for readers.
Grammar:
I'm not really one to comment too heavily on this since I listen to my Royal Road books using the app. From what I heard, everything sounded great. I had no issues.
Characters:
In the first seven chapters there are actually quite a few characters (I did say it was a rich story). There are the characters I've already mentioned (Palinus, Rufian, Bruchts, Marcus and Minucia), but there are also Palinus's friend Seline and all of the characters from the prologue (Podius and Emperor Septimus, and Podius' mentor). There is a very latin sort of thing happening with the names in this story. That makes it both flavorful and easy for chuckleheads like me to imagine and get a frame of reference for.
I think my favorite part was the scene where the boys first go into the rift and meet the other adventure
