- HalfliteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Of the fictions I've read on Royal Road, this one is easily in the top 3. Although the story is stubbed, there is a generous amount of story that is free to read, and I'll be picking up a copy of the full book. This review is just of what is available on Royal Road, not having read the finished story yet.
Style:
The author crafts a vivid world with their descriptions and it is clear a lot of thought and effort went into the world-building. From the physiology of the creatures to the caste system to the construction of the landmass, everything is taken into consideration. At times it can be a lot to take in, especially since many of the fictional names for things aren't always explained when they are introduced, but that didn't get in the way of understanding the story.
This is one of the few stories where a balance of flowery language and brevity are balanced just right in my opinion. From experience that is very difficult to achieve, so props to the author.
Story:
As mentioned above, the author does a great job of having the story move at a good clip; I never felt that events were progressing too slow. Some turns appear quite suddenly, and although none of them were too off-putting, some could have had more build up.
These are all nitpicks:
The whole first part of Syla's plot where she is trying to get Aiur on her side, while intriguing, almost doesn't matter when house Zerkash and her group are forced to work along each other in the face of the Naga threat.
We see a little of how Ra'ven isn't a great leader, but it would have been nice to see more of that before departing Nerkai.
Also, the idea of Aiur's decisions being implanted in his mind truly came out of left field and apropos of nothing, at least at the point where it is first brought up, doesn't really matter to the rest of the story happening at that point.
Grammar:
Occasional extra words and punctuation.
Characters:
Well fleshed out across the board. Each of their beliefs and personalities really come thr - MasterCyclonisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I do hope to see more of this, it has been an enjoyable read so far. I have noticed no grammar mistakes All of the characters introduced so far have been interesting, not one of them has made me wish it was an x chapter instead. Should def be featured on Rising Stars.
