Schrödinger's Box
Deke Kelton and his team of physics lab assistants stumble upon an unexpected byproduct while exploring superconductivity: an impenetrable field they call "the Box". Kelton recognizes the world changing potential of their astonishing discovery, but is determined to understand the Box's true nature before releasing the breakthrough to the scientific world. As they explore the boundaries of the technology, a freak lab accident uncovers a shocking secret—time stops within the Box. Nothing can escape its limits… except for Kelton’s consciousness.
While Kelton tries to understand the boundaries, Robeson Tilly, the autocratic head of the Applied Physics department, has other plans. Tilly uses every underhanded trick in academia’s arsenal to wrest control of the project from Kelton and claim the discovery as his own. Threats, manipulations, bureaucratic power plays, and outright sabotage threaten the integrity of the groundbreaking research, Kelton's career, his life and even his family.
Meanwhile, Kelton’s consciousness, freed from his physical body, explores the world beyond the material. His nihilistic worldview is shattered as he navigates a plane where time, space, and mortality lose meaning, and undeniable evidence of consciousness beyond death, but are those he meets while exploring this realm reliable guides? With every revelation, Kelton is drawn further into a reality science had not prepared him to face, even as Tilly threatens to destroy everything he’s worked for.
Schrödinger's Boxis a fast-moving and sometimes humorous fusion of scientific discovery, spiritual development, and academic intrigue, where, for those willing to explore, the boundaries of physics and metaphysics disappear. Will Kelton outwit Tilly and safeguard the secrets of the Box? Or will this world-changing discovery fall into the wrong hands? Perfect for readers of Christopher Priest’sThe PrestigeandBlake Crouch’s Dark Matter, this thought-provoking narrative explores the power of discovery in both the physical and spiritual realms, and the pitfalls of ambition. Drawing inspiration from Carl Sagan’sContactand Tim LaHaye’sLeft Behind,Schrödinger’s Boxtouches on humanity's eternal questions and the profound consequences of unearthing truths about life, death, and the universe that may forever alter the course of civilization and the individual. - ConanBrownRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoyed reading this book. It contained a very interesting and thoughtful view of what happens to us after we die from a scientific perspective. The diverse characters all played a roll to help tell the story of good vs evil that has been going on from the beginning of time. It is a story of love that families have for each other and that there is nothing to fear after death.
The only criticism that I have is that some of the references made in the book were ones that mostly old people know and younger generations may not get them. I liked that Deke drove an old Nova but my kids have never heard of them. - WMayhewRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Engaging characters, clever action, and a thoughtful treatment of the afterlife. Schrödinger’s Box juxtaposes the pettiness that can be the worst of academia with the excitement of scientific discovery for an entertaining glimpse into a researcher's world. The pace is quick, and the surprising (truly unforeseen) plot twists kept me reading page after page.
- ZdravoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An enchanting story of a hero (Deke) who embarks on an adventure into consciousness, spirituality, and time itself - reminiscent of the prisoner who escapes the cavern in Plato’s allegory of the cave and discovers unfiltered reality.
Fast-paced, with surprising plot twists and turns - I did not anticipate the climactic ending, or the denouement of the final chapter, which are strikingly satisfying in their respective clarity and ambiguity.
If it sounds too cerebral to be fun, or too mystical to be taken seriously - it isn’t. As thought-provoking as it is, it is also approachable and relatable, with some laugh-out-loud moments to remind us that life (like a good novel) is supposed to be enjoyed, too.
My rule of thumb for judging novels is whether I feel relieved or a little sad when they end. I didn’t want this one to end. And in a way, it doesn’t. - [email protected]Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Schrödinger’s Box isn’t like anything else I’ve read in this genre. I started it and didn’t stop until I finished—Incredibly engaging as I read the whole thing in under five hours. The story blends science, philosophy, and spirituality in a way that just works. It kept me guessing, kind of like Game of Thrones—every time I thought I knew what was coming next, it flipped things around on me.
What really stuck with me, though, was the incredible level of detail on the tech side and on the non-tech side how the book tackled some big questions—like why we go through pain and hardship if there is (or isn’t) a God. One of the best moments is a conversation between Deke and Zenek, where Zenek tells a story about mentoring the children of a powerful king back in 360 AD. The king gave his kids everything they wanted and shielded them from all struggles. Sounds ideal—until it wasn’t. The way that lesson played out hit hard and actually gave me a lot to think about in my personal life and raising kids.
Original & Thought-provoking: There’s also something here I’ve rarely seen in fiction—an actual answer to the question: If heaven’s real and everyone’s happy… then what? I’ve heard that line all my life, but never felt like anyone really explained it. This book actually gives a "plausible" explanation. The afterlife Kelton explores isn’t just peaceful—it’s huge. Endless places to go, things to learn, even the ability to explore every memory you’ve ever had. For once, eternity didn’t sound boring—it sounded incredible.
You really have to see the big picture to fully appreciate the big surprise ending, but when you do, it lands. And if the author writes a sequel? I’m already in line for it. Well written. - agb615Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Such a good read! Each chapter keeps me hooked and anxious to see what happens next.
The characters are interesting and well thought out. The concept is mind bending, to say the least. The dialogue between characters is true to life and I find myself wanting to be in the book!
