Description
In the towering halls of the Skydrid estate, legacy is carved in iron and blood. Born into a family where strength is sacred and failure unspoken, Jacob Skydrid was once a bright, ambitious heir — until ambition shattered him.
Two years ago, Jacob dared what no scholar, no sorcerer, no king had succeeded in: the creation of the Immortality Rune.He failed. And in the failure, lives were lost, reputations broken, bonds severed.
Now, Jacob lives in quiet exile within his own home, his only companions the dusty weight of books and the lingering ghosts of guilt. His nights are haunted by dreams he cannot remember, and his days consumed by a desperate, obsessive hunger for knowledge — the only thing that numbs the ache of what he has done.
But the world beyond his bedroom door refuses to let him wither away.Under his father's iron rule, Jacob must not only pursue sorcery but forge his body into a weapon fit to uphold the Skydrid name.Under the gaze of his siblings — some pitying, some resentful — Jacob must prove himself worthy of the bloodline he nearly tainted. And in the quiet corners of the world, whispers stir: the runes of death, eternity, and invincibility — runes that could reshape existence itself — may yet be within reach.
As duty clashes with regret, as knowledge battles guilt, Jacob will be forced to ask himself:Is immortality a salvation — or a curse? And how many more lives will be broken before he finds his answer?
In a world where death is the only certainty, what price would you pay to defy it?

Keep up the good work! - NotPhoebeeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The main character, Jacob Skydrid, is haunted by his past but determined to make a name for himself. His inner turmoil is put at the forefront of the first few chapters, and we, as the audience, feel sympathetic towards him. Without the depth that his character provides, this story would not be half as interesting as it is. His cold outlook on life brings complexity to every interaction he has, from family members to potential friends.
The overall story mostly revolves around Jacob, and as of the first ten chapters, the plot itself isn't very well defined. However, this doesn't take away from the story overall, as there are still lots of things developing in these first few chapters. We watch as Jacob interacts with family members, delves into the mystical world of runes, and tries to avoid thoughts of his past. All this culminates into an interesting story even though it lacks a looming conflict or immediate sense of urgency.
The style is well done, with prose that gets right to the point in its explanations. This enhances the story's understandability as the complex magic system is explained in simple terms and thus made easily digestible.
The grammar was great from what I could tell.

Each scene contributes meaningfully to Jacob's growth, from his quiet moments of reflection to his challenging training with Alex. The introduction of fantasy elements like rune theory and noble politics adds richness to the world without overshadowing the emotional core of the story. The pacing is steady, building toward an emotional climax, and maintaining intrigue throughout.

In Rune of Immortality, Night Scholar introduces Jacob Skydrid, the reclusive fourth son of one of the kingdom’s most powerful noble families. Jacob has turned inward, haunted by nightmares, burdened by the ghosts of a failed magical experiment, and estranged from his siblings. He is devoted to studying rune theory in pursuit of knowledge, safety, and legacy. Set in a world where magic is measured through aspects, and scholars wield power as fearsomely as knights, the story follows Jacob’s quiet but intense journey from isolation to ambition, culminating in a fateful testing day that may define—or destroy—his future as a sorcerer.
Night Scholar manages to grip you with a vibrant style of writing. He introduces a Complex, layered protagonist with a rich inner world and evolving motivations, emotional pacing that never rushes but always builds toward meaningful payoff, and an original and believable magic system, particularly the rune mechanics and scholar hierarchy.
Story: (4.5/5)
The story unfolds deliberately, balancing introspection with escalating external stakes. Chapters 1–4 focus heavily on Jacob’s internal world, trauma, and relationships, while Chapters 5–8 pivot to training, worldbuilding, and institutional conflict. The progression is satisfying and structurally sound: early emotional groundwork makes the later magical and societal systems feel earned. The narrative spikes with tension during the aspect testing sequence, especially with the surprise elevation of Arthur, a commoner with heart and talent, who challenges the noble-centric hierarchy.
Characters (5/5)
Characterization is a clear strength. Jacob is a compelling protagonist—deeply flawed, introverted, burdened by guilt, and driven not by glory but survival and understanding. His subtle arc through discipline, frustration, and growing ambition is well-handled.
Jacob: Quietly complex; his - Haviel2102Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0"Rune of Immortality" draws readers into the complex inner world of Jacob Skydrid, a young man haunted by a tragic past and mysterious nightmares. The work skillfully weaves Jacob's challenging present with painful flashbacks, highlighting the burden of guilt and the pressures of his noble lineage that he carries.
A key strength of the story lies in the multi-layered development of Jacob. He evolves from a weak, insecure boy, retreating from reality, to someone who gradually finds purpose through the study of runery and strives to overcome his limitations, though his path is fraught with hardship and fear. Supporting characters like the loyal attendant Belemir, the outspoken sister Jessica, and the stern elder brother Alex contribute to diverse relationships, enriching the narrative. The introduction of Arthur, with his unique status and contrasting personality, promises significant future intrigue.
The world-building features an interesting magic system based on runes, though some aspects could be explored more deeply. The pacing is steady, although some flashbacks regarding Lucas are quite detailed. The work delves into profound themes of family, guilt, ambition, and the cost of knowledge. With its smooth, emotive prose, "Rune of Immortality" marks a promising start to what could be a captivating fantasy series. - Lucas WhorleyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story thoroughly dripping with love for the fantasy genre, and that brings so much to the table in terms of enjoyment; rather than getting caught up in the intricacies too much, it assumes the reader understands the genre and dives in head first, so that is amazing.
The drip-feed of information about Jacob and his past are done very expertly in my opinion, so that the reader is able to slowly comprehend what's happened. Overall, the style is very straight-forward which works in its favor.
Style
As mentioned above, the style is fine. Although, there is some amount of head-hopping and a bit of perspective shifts. There seems to be confusion on the narrator's perspective altogether. At points, it feels like it's being told strictly from Jacob's perspective which would indicate a third-person limited perspective, but at other times it shifts mid-scene to another person's. What I mean is, you may notice that certain characters' emotions are outright dictated through the prose rather than being assumed by our protagonist.
Example:
Arthur dropped his hand, sensing the discomfort, but kept talking.
The story is not told from Arthur's persepective, and yet we understand that he's sensed discomfort. How does Jacob know what Arthur personally senses? This happens several times throughout the text. Another example is one that shows early in chapter 2 where the perspective shifts so dramatically for a moment that we get direct internal thoughts from Jacob's sister. This took me so off guard that I assumed it would be a story with shifting perspectives, chapter to chapter.
The shifting perspectives are mildly confusing, but will likely be no problem for the average reader. This is likely a personal nitpick, I admit.
Story
It's dang good and I like it. It's compelling, told expertly, and interestingly. I get a very distinct anime vibe (number rankings, goofy soon-to-be buddy, etc.) but this is in no way a detraction. Very good stuff. I like it.
Grammar
There are very few - Nemo BlancRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As someone who’s always gravitated toward introspective protagonists, Night Scholar hit exactly the right note for me. It’s a coming-of-age fantasy wrapped in academic ambition, buried guilt, and the lonely pursuit of understanding a world that rarely gives back what it takes. What starts as a slow-burn character portrait quickly unfolds into a compelling exploration of identity and expectation.
Jacob Skydrid isn’t your typical overpowered chosen one, he’s sleep-deprived, painfully self-aware, and far more interested in books than battles. Yet the emotional stakes are high, and the pressure of his family legacy seeps through every scene. The story's tone is steeped in melancholy, but with moments of warmth, especially in his interactions with Jessica and Arthur, that feel earned rather than forced.
The writing itself is sharp. Stylistically, it reminds me of a hybrid between Mushoku Tensei and The Wandering Inn, layered, slightly ornate, but never clunky. Dialogue flows naturally, and the prose holds a clean rhythm. There’s a clear eye for pacing: action scenes like Jacob’s training with Alex balance grueling realism with emotional payoff, while quieter moments (like his awe at Lazarus’ book) show the obsessive joy of a bookworm discovering purpose.
Grammatically, the story is nearly flawless. I only caught a couple of comma splices, but nothing that pulled me out of the narrative. Structurally, it’s impressive, every scene builds either character, theme, or momentum toward the climax at the Aspect Testing Centre. And that final twist? Three Grade 1s, with Jacob among them? I grinned hard.
If you’re into thoughtful, character-driven magic systems with emotional depth and academic flair, Night Scholar is absolutely worth the read. It doesn’t scream for attention, it earns it quietly, like a true scholar. - CapwallcroftRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Rune of Immortality is a compelling fantasy offerings, weaving a tale of ambition, guilt, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. Set in a richly constructed world where magic and nobility intertwine, the story follows Jacob Skydrid, the fourth son of a powerful noble family, as he grapples with the consequences of a failed magical experiment that haunts his present and shapes his future. A real mystery is going on and the author is doing a great job of showing it!!!!!!
At the heart of the narrative lies a meticulously crafted magic system centered around runes. Jacob's fascination with runery, especially the elusive "true runes" like the Death, Invincible, and Eternity Runes, adds depth to the world-building. These runes are not merely tools of power but symbols of humanity's desire to transcend mortality and achieve perfection.
Jacob's journey is marked by profound introspection and emotional complexity. Haunted by nightmares and burdened by the weight of past failures, he embodies the archetype of a scholar seeking redemption. His relationships with family members, such as his loyal attendant Belemir, outspoken sister Jessica, and stern elder brother Alex, are portrayed with detail and great care, adding layers to his character development. Great dialogue and good emotions!!! Really gets the reader attached and invested!!!!
The story adopts a slow-burn approach, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the intricacies of the world and the protagonist's internal struggles. Themes of ambition, the cost of knowledge, and the nature of power are explored thoughtfully, inviting readers to ponder the ethical implications of Jacob's quest.
The authors prose is polished and evocative, effectively conveying the emotional states of characters and the atmosphere of the setting. The narrative balances introspective moments with plot progression, ensuring that readers remain engaged throughout Jacob's journey and is honestly pretty damn awesome! We got some descriptions her - EdenCRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The first thing that struck me was the names. Jacob, Abel, Jeremiah, even Jessica they all feel delightfully biblical and weighty in a way that gives the entire world this mythic undertone. I love them. It adds an unexpected layer of depth even before the story begins to reveal itself.
This novel immediately stands out with its strong prose and confident narrative voice. The writing style is polished and immersive. The author has a great sense of rhythm when shifting between inner thoughts, lore, and character dialogue. Every scene feels deliberate and grounded in purpose.
What really shines is the complexity of the magic system. It balances classic fantasy structure with a scholarly twist that feels fresh. The “aspect” mechanic is conceptually rich and connects power to personality in a way that keeps things personal and philosophical.
Characters are emotionally compelling, especially the protagonist who wrestles with guilt, ambition, and buried grief. Side characters are distinct and easy to remember. The interactions feel real and layered.
If there is a flaw, it lies in the pacing. The story leans more on introspection than outward conflict, which may slow the momentum for readers looking for immediate action. But the emotional tension and thematic clarity more than make up for it.
Smart, slow-burning, and sincere this one deserves attention. - WordcountRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The Rune of Immortality throws you into a fantasy world of magic right at the start and does it so well that I was immersed almost immediately. You will notice well-crafted magic systems and detailed surroundings, making sure that it never feels empty to read. The characters are defined by what they do, and not what the author says they are, which works very well in this setting, making them likeable and interesting. Their roles and personalities are natural and their dialogue is not exaggerated.
The story so far can only be described as gripping and engaging - even if the most minute things are currently happening, it is never boring. It also doesn't tell you everything that you need to know, leaving you wanting answers for the mysteries. The mood shifts accordingly to the scenes and flows naturally
My only gripe with the writing is that there are a few typos here and there that interrupt the immersion, but that is a very small nitpick that can always be fixed.
Overall, highly recommend reading it if you're a fan of magic and fantasy! There is barely anything missing with this story as a whole, and it will entertain you for a good amount of chapters.
