Description
In a world filled with powerful paladins, raging sorcerors, and skilled shadow walkers, Jinyoung is the one-and-onlyONION KNIGHT. Now publishing Volume 2. Read extras and behind-the-scenes content onPatreon. For the past 10 years, Jinyoung has lived in a broken world struggling to make ends meet. The World Break saw hordes of monsters unleashed on an unsuspecting populace, but life slowly found a way to order through thesystem. Gifted with superhuman powers and abilities, every citizen on the planet was now a potential adventurer, hero, or villain. Everyone was a player. Starting at level 1, each player has the No Class attribute. They have access to three basic skills: [dash], [scan] and [charge]. In the early days of the World Break, players needed these skills to survive. But now, players know better. What's the point of unlocking [dash] when you can get [teleport] as a sorceror or [shadowstep] as a rogue? Instead, everyone saves their skill points for later. Once they get to level 10, they can join a guild and change their job class. Once they become a fighter, scholar or rogue, they have access to additional skills. Players can control the elements, harden their skin to the toughness of a diamond or gain the strength of 50 men. But what if you don't join a guild? What if you can't afford the guild fees? The system doesn't allow No Class players to proceed past level 10. No exceptions. On the cusp of graduation from the Academy, Jinyoung needs either gold or fame to join a guild, but he has neither. At best, he'll have to work for years for the chance to get a job class. Most of his classmates won't even get the chance. Except he makes it. Jinyoung becomes the one player who beat impossible odds and is gifted a class by the system. Return of the Onion Knight updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

- Yusuke_TakumiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started this story not expecting much but when I started it, I got sucked in and blazed through the chapters.
I really want to have more of them and am disappointed that I didn’t wait a bit more in order to have a few more chapters.
But I enjoyed it a lot, the MC seems to have abilities with a lot of potential (they were just revealed) and I am curious about how he will deal with them and his new environment. - JacksonRoyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Oh oh oh boy, is this one gripping! From the very first page, you are transported into an entirely new universe, feeling like an integral part of the party itself. The author masterfully crafts an atmosphere that is both immersive and captivating, drawing you into the heart of the story without overwhelming you with excessive details. This delicate balance is incredibly difficult to achieve, yet it is done here with such finesse.
The writing style is nothing short of fantastic. It's engaging and fluid, effortlessly pulling you deeper into the narrative with each turn of the page. The atmosphere created is palpable, with a lingering intensity that permeates every scene. You can almost feel the tension and excitement as if you were there alongside the characters, experiencing their triumphs and trials firsthand.
Every scene is meticulously crafted to keep you on the edge of your seat, yet the author manages to maintain a level of subtlety that keeps you intrigued without feeling bombarded. The world-building is so vivid and detailed, yet never feels overdone. Instead, it complements the story perfectly, providing a rich backdrop that enhances the overall experience.
Thank you for bringing your incredible work to light. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be along for the ride. Your talents are not only appreciated but deeply admired. I eagerly look forward to seeing where this story goes and how it continues to unfold. The journey so far has been nothing short of exhilarating, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. Keep up the fantastic work! - EshmatarelRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0First of all, the story is good. The characters are well written and the premise (or what was revealed of it) is interesting enough. It seems that finally after 25~ chapters the conflict is unveiling, and is more character driven than “this big evil faction is invading/infiltrating”.
Perhaps surprisingly, the story is pretty melancholy at times, and outright sad at others. From the name I expected a more lighthearted romp, yet the characters seem more struggling and filled with bitter regrets and resentment more than anything else.
Honestly, would I have known that going in, I may not have given this story a shot, but now I’m invested in it. Just need to make sure to have a few chapters of “generic isekai power king OPMC 3000” lined up to read immediately after.
Story:
As mentioned above, the story is very very slow. This might be a consequence of shorter chapters, and word per word it might keep pace with faster stories, but chapters are part of pacing, and it does get frustrating at times.
That being said, the story is finally picking up, and is looking good. I just hope it’ll all go on a positive trajectory of healing, hope, and redemption.
But subjective tastes aside, it looks like a story with a slight twist on system apocalypse, the focus being character drive and not external system pressure.
Style:
Please please author for the love of every system published use brackets, use anything, instead of capital letters for system naming. I can’t help but slow down and emphasize those words and it really throws off my reading pace. Please please please.
On a more serious note, the short chapters are a serious flaw, at many points I wished whatever was going on to reach the point already, yet the point only arrived a couple of chapters later.
There is some repetition in descriptions and narration, but nothing that really threw me off. The writing is easy to get through which help ameliorate that.
On a very positive note are the comic-like illustrations the author adds - JanPonaRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5If I was a rude PERSON, I would give this story A half star BECAUSE it was almost unreadable FOR me. Essentially, every SYSTEM related word IS in all caps. I GUESS it’s a STYLISTIC choice, but reading IT is unbearable. Caps DRAW your attention to a word, especially when SKIMMING. Also, they’re USUALLY read as yelling. And it DOESN’T seem to serve any purpose IN the text because WE can tell WHICH words are SYSTEM related already.
If reading this part of the review was not infuriating to you, you can probably go read the story. I will say that the pace is very slow, and the prose isn’t great. The 3.5 I gave the book represents how good it is if you can somehow ignore all the caps everywhere. - RasipRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The story so far seems interesting, but the chapters are way too short and feel like the first ten were written as two or three chapters then chopped up. That wouldn't be so bad, if most didn't start with a lore dump that mostly repeats the lore dump from the previous chapter. It really throws off the flow of the story when it keeps getting interrupted.
Don't get me wrong, the premise is interesting and the characters are acting in a believable way, just needs a little work on the flow. - OcerkinRoyal Road★★★ 3.020 chapters and we only needed 5 of them in reality.
the author is long winded and frequently repeats things multiple times.
there is so much unnecessary padding that there is barely a story here yet, id put this on your read later list and come back in a year or 2, then buckle up for a lot of padding and not much action or progress, its like he is trying to make the story actively feel like playing an onion knight in final fantasy, an unbearable slog until the last few levels (chapters). and just like an onion knight in that game you are better off playing a different class (reading a different story) until it is max level (story is completed) - MythicalKeyboardSmithingLvl1Royal Road★ 0.5This story moves at a glacial pace while you are given tidbits about mysterious future plotlines and the Mc stands still and does nothing but observe.
the pacing is terrible.
the action is non existent.
the MC is like an observer. He doesn’t get to do things or experience things or think about things. He just watches while exposition and mystery plot hooks are inserted in a poor way.
