Reincarnation Without Perks
Community Rating
Description
During chemo, 60 years old Mark read novels and manga to pass the time. Whenever someone died, they'd get reincarnated into an overpowered protagonist with unbelievable powers and a glorious future set in stone.
'Wouldn't that be nice?' He soon dismissed the thought as just another facet of his illness.
Little did he know that he was also chosen: by a lazy God trying to cover his mess.
Join Mark, now Andrew Finn, as he is reincarnated into an empire under siege. Hordes of monsters threaten to exterminate the population. Demons are plotting from behind the scenes. Most people are poor as dirt and Finn is the same.
‘Will my past life as a businessman help me fight monsters and demons? No. But will I be damned if I just roll over and die to these bastards? Absolutelyyes!’
Finn will grow up while his new world falls apart. Whether his presence can make a difference or whether destruction is inevitable not even God himself will know.

- 1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Using reincarnation as a way to introduce a character to a setting is done fairly often, and there's plenty of variations on it. However, doing it in a self-aware way, poking fun at the tropes without breaking immersion? I think this story is firmly placed in the latter category, and that's quite impressive. It's hard to pull off a comedic story that takes itself story, but I have high hopes for this one. The writing is competent, and the narrative flows well. I reccomend giving this story a try!
- DeathpacitoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall, it's a charming story that's easy to get invested in.
STYLE:
The style is solid. The prose strikes a great balance between functionality, wittiness, and elegance. The sentences are smooth to read and digest, and the narrative style is quite fun. The story is told from a third-person omniscient PoV, I believe, and it's one of the better-done instances of such a PoV. Things are almost always clear as day, with no room for confusion or ambiguity at the prose level.
GRAMMAR:
I didn't find any grammar mistakes. Maybe there were minor ones, but without intentionally hunting for them, they weren't noticeable to me. So yeah, grammar is fine and certainly didn't get in the way of my enjoyment.
STORY:
The story, at least at the beginning, has a rather rustic charm. The stakes started relatively low, but the writing had a way of pulling me in and making me care. It was easy to not only get invested in the characters, but also their relationship with one another. And after building that sort of bond between the reader and the characters, the stakes began to rise quickly. The pacing was pretty great, without parts that felt rushed or dragged thus far.
The only minor issue I found was with chapter 11, where
Tommy died, time somehow rewound, and he was alive again. It's implied that Annie might have either some form of foresight (where the "death" was just a vision we experienced from her PoV), or she could outright rewind time or undo events she doesn't like.
I appreciate the effort at showing-not-telling her powers, though in this case there's slightly too much onus placed on the reader (and their genre-familiarity) to make sense of which parts were real and which weren't, especially during one of the most critical moments in the story thus far.
CHARACTERS:
There's a pretty big cast of characters, even early on in the story. The major ones have a distinct sense of personality, along with a healthy amount of nuance. Characters are their own people, with virtues and flaws - HorribleWriterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At first glance, the story feels like the isekai genre that had been here before a million times over. But in the case of the story, that does not really mean anything. It knows how to pave its own path while elegantly avoiding too many clichés. There is no superpower or shortcut. The protagonist starts from scratch, which could be said about the story too. First, we learn a little bit about the world, then as the protagonist grows, new characters are introduced. Then, when readers have had enough time to get used to them, the story progresses and reveals the monsters of the world. Basically, even in terms of storytelling, it all starts from humble beginnings.
Style: The world is revealed gradually as the protagonist learns more and more. This slower introduction allows the reader to catch up and it makes the hometown of the protagonist feel like a cozy little village. Since there is nothing to compare it to at first, the reader grows to like the place and the people in it.
Grammar: I did not find anything unusual. The author's development is quite clear as the story progressed. While at first, descriptions were more about telling and were packed, in the later chapters, they become more showing and only reveal the information gradually, which is a much nicer effect.
Story: The plot flows smoothly in the way of several smaller arcs that pretty much detail how the protagonist acquires new knowledge and skills. His goal becomes obvious pretty quickly and then it's all about seeing how he will get where he wants to be. Personally, though, I wish the description of the book would not spoil as much. I feel like I know something I shouldn't yet just by reading the synopsis. Maybe it would be interesting to rework that, so more elements in the story can stay surprising.
Character: The protagonist is quite unsympathetic. But that is kind of the point. He's an old man trapped in the body of a child. He's outgrown this part of life, and yet, he has to return to it now. His gru - KoolCatzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: I am not really big into reviews because, for one, I’m not eager to discourage new authors from continuing on their journey forward. I prefer to inbox them and discuss my criticism because public feedback, when too harsh, can deter someone from enjoying the story they might have otherwise liked without the negative review. I Review stories I enjoy and/or see the potential.
Style is nothing flamboyant, which makes it a relaxing read. The dialogue is likeable and had me chuckling in the first chapter with God. Narration is also decent and, in the third-person, omniscient. Personally, I like first-person or third-person limited, but I am enjoying this chosen perception nonetheless.
Grammer and flow are pretty good, and from the comments, the author fixes Errors when they’re pointed out, which is always a good sign for the series. I never found myself stopping to re-read something.
The story is good and seems to have an outlined direction. I usually come in with my enthusiasm tempered with isekais. While I don’t hate them, that tune has been played a few too many times in my ear lately. However, I am a sucker for a weak protagonist stumbling to get stronger. The pace feels good in that department, as I love a slow burn or, rather, a realistic burn—becoming a poop master is clearly how all protagonists should start.
The characters are good. Finn is indeed a determined ‘kid’ trying to make the best of a subpar reincarnation, which gives him an endearing likeability. There is a large supporting cast, and the characters have their own personalities and doesn’t feel like random NPCs.
Overall, great job. Keep it up! Posting your art is difficult to do, and I can’t wait to see what this story turns into later down the road. - LlazyLlamaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm generally someone who prefers the whole 'overpowered' MC trope. So when I was presented with the complete opposite of that, let's just say I had my doubts. I came in wondering if I was going to be able to stomach a 'weak' protagonist, and I left feeling lighter after a solid hour of chuckling to myself.
Style: There was nothing new and heaven-shattering about the way it was written. That being said, perspectives flowed easily and the word choice felt smooth to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the small system flair was presented. The comments the characters had in their status left me smiling.
Grammar: Maybe it's because I'm reading the chapters after they have been revised and edited. However, there are no complaints from me about any issues due to grammar.
Story: I've enjoyed myself from the prologue and all the way to the latest chapter. The story is clean and has steered me where it intended to go without any bumps. The pacing may seem fast to those who prefer slow, grinding buildup. Yet, I think that it has moved along at a fine pace without making it feel like I was climbing up a hill just to get to certain points of the plot.
Character: The moment the dad of the MC was introduced, I was laughing. And the first chapter ends with a hilarious nickname that stays around just long enough for you to enjoy the joke about it without seeming like it was beating a dead horse. Every character so far has shown their own unique personalities that I've enjoyed the more I got to read. Even the useless 'John John' had his place.
Overall: I can't wait till more chapters are posted and the little troupe grow more into themselves and face the world and academy. - NoctualasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When god isekai’s you to a manga world.
This story is absurd and that is a great thing! I love it’s creativity, you never know what’s coming and above all it’s hilarious. Comedy in general can be hit or miss and comedy in webnovels is even harder to pull of but Cedric did an amazing job.
I thought of writing down some hilarious quotes in this review but I’ll leave those gems for you, the reader, to discover.
The characters are well fleshed out and unique, and seamlessly fit in the story. Mark/Andrew/Finn/Achoo’s journey from an entitled businessman to a peasant and beyond that has been a complete blast.
I was cheering when he mastered silly objectives such as Eating Solid Foods and Raising Poultry, and I guess that shows that the author made me care about the characters which is one of the most difficult challenges for any author.
While I was intrigued after reading the blurb, I was afraid that the story wouldn’t be my cup of tea but I was pleasantly surprised. The author is a talented writer and his grammar and sentence structure remains clean and impeccable throughout the story.
5/5 would recommend to anyone on Royal Road. - Bruce cRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story skips around a bit, with drastically different approaches taken by the MC for each story Arc. That being said, it is an interesting start, wit a clever MC, who is trying hard to be less antisocial than his natural inclination.
It might be plot armor, but the idea this world's System pushes teamwork over individual accomplishments makes the story unique. - MnesymneRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This story isn't perfect.
This story isn't your normal progression/cultivation story.
This story isnt a fast story.
But this story is interesting. It took me a while to get into it because the progression/cultivation system isn't something i've read before. But it kept me interested in how it would continue.
I would recommend people to just give it a try, dont do it based on the reviews ( I think they have been review bombed with dislikes) - KarnnieRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The MC IS NOT OP!!! He works hard and tries to figure out the world. Its good for world building and the characters really make you want to be interested in them. There are some editing errors but not many. The characters are believable and the tension feels real. This is a HIGH FANTASY story.
- ContradictionRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Look, let me preface this by saying it isn't bad. The grammar was fine, the character interactions (what little of then there was) felt real. I just don't care, and that's the problem.
It's a reincarnation/Isekai story that's honestly boring. I'm not sure why the reincarnation bit was even used. Seems like it doesn't serve a purpose other than math skill +1. The isolation from the other kids his age because of his aloof "I'm an adult" mindset was well done. It was natural. It's just so boring reading about a frankly manipulative kid that I have no attachment to. I'm just not into a 6 year olds school life and his holier than thou ways.
To be fair, looking at other reviews, people who have made it into the 20's chapters seem to really like this story. I gave it 9 before I asked myself if I'm willing to read more boring b.s. for a potential payoff. And the answers no. I've got 40 other tabs on my phone of stories I've forgotten about that I need to clear out. I'm not making it 41 for a story that can't hook me in the first 10. If you're ok reading about a child character that isn't a child character, but totally is, give it a shot. If not, don't waste your time
