Refugium (A Progression Fantasy)
Community Rating
Description
As a great danger that cannot be seen nor understood approaches earth, humanity struggles with a difficult decision, to take a leap of faith or face almost certain death.
Kaleb was doing his best sticking to his 9 to 6 job, even as the country went to hell and people started losing hope, even as they tore apart shopfronts and made walking the streets an adventure. And as hope eroded bit by bit, so did his options, until there was only one left.
As an old world perishes, a new world embraces what’s left of humanity, but how welcoming can it really be? Especially when they’re not its first settlers.

What to expect:
The story mostly takes place in a medievalesque fantasy world where magic is no myth.
Mage lead.
This story tries to adhere to the Iceberg Theory as much as possible, meaning that it keeps an internal consistency through, sometimes, underlying reasoning. So there's little-to-no hand-waving and no 'this is just how it is' approach, regardless of whether a character's perspective suggests otherwise.

- NightmareShamanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I came to this fiction from the authors other fiction (The Elder Lands) after finishing the available chapters. I highly recommend reading both stories by B. Salem. I am just sad that this story seems to be on Hiatus at this time.
This story (Refugium) is very well written and grammar is excellent.
The storyline is compelling as are the characters. The world is cool and feels fresh. There are mysteries to be explored so you never feel tired or bored when reading.
The magic system is very cool as well. The main character is unique but not OP. MC makes progress as the story develops but is not handed everything.
The main character is deep and has real reactions to incidents in his life. The characters around the main character have their own ambitions and also feel interesting.
All in all I am super impressed with the consistency by which this author writes. Developing 2 great stories with compelling characters and storylines as well as interesting and unique magic systems is very hard. - PunpopeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As an unseen menace approaches Earth, humanity grapples with a fateful decision: leap into the unknown or face near-certain doom. Kaleb, maintaining his routine amidst societal collapse, finds his options dwindling to one. As the old world perishes, a new one emerges to shelter humanity's remnants. Yet, its true welcome is uncertain, given they are not the first settlers. This narrative masterfully explores themes of survival, adaptation, and the challenges of beginning anew, promising a gripping and thought-provoking read."
- Eric VanderlipRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Refugium shows what happens when a stubborn, down-to-earth boy gets thrown into a gritty LITRPG Fantasy world with his kid sistem as a refugee.
Style: A consistent perspective and very smooth writing. The pace is solid and exciting. Combat well described. Dialogue is natural. No complains.
Story: Masterful world building. An extraordinary care has been given to every facet of the worldbuilding and how things would realistically play out, whether in combat or societal interations. For example, as more and more refugees learn the local language, this drives down waiges. This extreme commitment to authenticity pays dividents as you get drawn into this amazing fictional world.
Grammar: Near perfect. My need to edit went mostly unfufilled.
Character: a vibrant cast of fleshed out characters. Protagonist is sympathetic, and his relationship with his family feels genuine and deep. Even in the first chapter, there are meaningful moments that tug at your heartstrings. Kaleb struggles to do right and survive his absurd new enviroment propel this narrative.
Conclusion: I highly recommend Refugium. In terms of writing, worldbuilding, characters, it doesn't get better than this. You'll soon find yourself relentlessly click "next chapter" to find out what happens next. It's an addicting read. - jabbermockyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It has that slow drip quality where everything is moving at a solid pace and consistently reveals more of the world. The world and magic seems thought out and doesnt make the mistake of rushing to give 40 skills the character will forget in the next chapter as some other novels do
- TheEarlofBronzeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Refugium is a very enjoyable book that reads like a standard, but high quality, fantasy novel rather than the more standard quality and style found in most webnovels. The characters are solid, the world is thoroughly fleshed out and the plot is intriguing. The MC has a good driving motivation with conflicting interests and believable struggles. The combat reads well and clearly yet still is gripping enough to engage the reader.
Overall, this book a great success so far and the author deserves more recognition than he seems to be receiving! Keep up the good work sir. - AlsoJohnRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Portal to another world? Maybe. People (and dolphins) choose to dive through portals because --- well the world might be about to be cosmically trucked.
Smooth story telling, nice subtle word play. Natural pacing Still early in story. I was disappointed to have to wait to see gamelit development. Edit to add: was not disappointed at all by gritty new developments. - Jester641Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I am enjoying the storyline. Good writing style and transitions. Good introductions to plot changes. MC was a little slow to like at first but seems to be moving forward well. Interesting storyline and progression. Looking forward to the story. MC is not overpowered and handed everything on a silver platter. Interesting so far watching him dealing with slow advancement and very realistic dealing with interaction with alien culture and people.
- BuddhaboiRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story is refreshingly original, and while I greatly appreciate the setting the author creates , it's the lack of details that holds this story back. For example, despite multiple races being present, they all feel interchangeable due to the lack of cultural details. Overall a decent story, with an original idea, good grammar and word choice, just missing some of the polish to make the world come alive.
- MnesymneRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I usually dont start reading stories on RR before they hit atleast the 100 chapter mark, but this one came up when i was looking for my next story to start and looked interesting.
So far there hasnt really been much of the RPG side of things, but its only 8 chapters in and it was said it was RPG lite. World and the tiny bit of system i've seen so far has potential.
I'll contineu reading and wait for a bit more and then ill adjust this review
