Description
"Know thy self, know thy enemy"
- Sun Tzu
Marcus Graham has been handed a raw deal. As a student of military history, he wants nothing more than to help the world learn from human conflict. But his increasingly hostile college is blocking his lectures and threatening to shut down his entire course. Studying war, they say, has no place in a world of peace.
But there's another world out there. A world wracked by constant strife. A world of fantasy races locked in combat, and where the tides of war are always in full swing. It is a world on the brink of almost total annihilation, where the common people have almost given up hope.
But Marcus, with his extensive knowledge of battlefield strategy, might just be the man to save them all.

Besides that engaging story and world with a certainly unique premise that does what it says on the tin. - Face of the KingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0it is still early but i like the start as it explains the MC having military knowledge that a random high school student won't have.
the world setting is unique yes we have seen the cave or vast cave networks and under kingdom stories before but this is unique in that the MC is human and starting in this place which will definitely have challenges like the food and gear he needs also the other unique aspect is the level of society being different. we are not starting with a sophisticated and fairly armed dawrves but cave man level of development. may be bronze era?!
i have not seen any grammar issue or any mispronunciations or may be using the wrong words or unfamiliar words. it was good and immersive story telling.
side characters are a bit glitch y mostly kobolds are annoying to read and the MC is not expressed enough may be a constraint of the author not wanting to make the story boring and getting in to the thick of the war but i think it could have been explained better and it has room for improvement the only issue i see is the MC being so happy go lucky and just going with the flow of war yes we see him be bloody or scared and broken but it seems artificial to me the feelings were not transferred to me.
thanks for the chapter i will re-review this later when more is revealed just wanted a summary of what i see till here; also may be add a tracking for the number of follow or reviews and give bonus chapters when you get 100 followers for example ?? - no1relat0Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I appreciate the story for what it is.
Medieval Skavens is quite the experience. Luckily or Unluckily I don't know much about them in Warhammer 40k, but the way they speak in the story is a funny thing to imagine.
Anyways! Great story so far, I await MC to explore more about the world
Edit: RAGHHH GREAT CHANGE TO THE NEW NOVEL. It's just the same as I imagined him in the story with them goofy ahh glasses - Probably_SatanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0By far, one of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading on RoyalRoad so far. The excellent writing, fun and interesting characters, and captivating story leave me full of anticipation for each and every chapter! Praise be to the Shai-Alud and He Who Festers!
Reviews must be at least 50 words long. - ReimiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far I'm really enjoying this story! It begins with the MC helping a band of definitely not Skaven that worship definitely not Nurgle(which I personally love), and I'd say the first skirmish sets a good precedent for what is to come.
Keep at it, IronLung! You got something great here^^ - Weaver ReaverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I enjoy when you can see the threads of a plotline forming and appearing before the actual 'major events' themselves take place, leaving a breadcrumb trail of where the story is heading. The author does that very well, with enough mystery that you are kept waiting to see how things unfold. You are left waiting to see how all the cards at play are dealt. If you are expecting major in depth strategy and planning, you won't find much of that, at least as far as I've read. But you will find a great story, of that I'm sure. The interactions between the protagonists and his 'entourage' are great, the characters so far seem mostly to stick to their 'thing' (for example: one only respects strength, and most thoughts and actions reflect that). This isn't a bad thing, you have an easier time distinguishing the characters and they have a lot of potential to bounce of each other nicely. I've noticed very little in the way of actual errors in the story, and while there isn't much in the way of fanfare in how the story is told, the shifting perspectives do more than their fair share of heavy lifting to keep you engaged.
- ShyBoyRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0and hard to avoid when you summon MC as a prophesised Shai-Alud (sic! really! I kid you not!), or a Final Chance for... ratmen. Yup, if rat's filth, reek, and cannibalism or breeding habits turned to eleven and with a solid dose of grotesque don't turn you away... you're probably gonna like it. The pacing tho worries me. Onward with the review. A quick one cause longer one got eaten by the form. Mind you, I don't simply use 4s and 5s when reviewing.
Grammar: 4.5 there are occasional problems, but I've seen and read through worse. Nothing a good round of edits or a decent proof-reader couldn't handle.
Style 4.
1. The species are distinctive. Their mannerism, speech patterns, insults, likes, dislikes are quite enough to set them apart. I also like that exceptions to that are truly exceptional. Big plus to style for that.
2. First chapter opens with a debate. Several folks discussed it rather deeply in the comments, which I believe means the chapter was engaging. I disagree with fellas calling for chapter one's removal, etc. for I believe they miss how it characterises the MC IN A PEACEFUL setting. Within first few chapters I found chapter 1 unreal, as it was WILDLY different in the things that happened. But it sets things in motion, it allows to show why a person from a modern setting would even ENTERTAIN staying in an isekai like the one Marcus ended up in. I think that chapter 1 is perfect and allows to see how much MC has changed due to circumstances and how much due to who he was in "our" world. Also, the crucial reveal from chapter 32 makes chapter 1 very relevant.
3. While RR folks are a bit too touchy about POV shifts IMO, I do agree POV shifts COULD be used better. Main reason for POV switches here are:
a) to show different races since they are alien (good! very good! That's how you learn that kobolds need to move around when speaking for parts of their speech are carried via jumps for instance. Tho if you're one of those who want more action, that could be an - EkoRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Large parts of the world-building are very heavily inspired by the Warhammer fantasy universe, which goes unacknowledged. The author does make the world his own somewhat, but it is still incredibly obvious to anyone familiar with the franchise. Honestly, I’d be fine if the author acknowledged this, the story is, after all, original in the way that counts.
Let me tell you about the three main factions that our MC finds himself entangled with:
The Skaven Ratman - A race of humanoid rats that worship The Horned Rat He-who-festers, a deity of disease and filth. They also incorporate disease into their wars.
The Lizardmen Kobolds – Savage humanoid lizards led by a giant toad on a floating throne. They are small and stupid while favouring ranged weapons – essentially an entire race of the skink cohort warhammer unit, though perhaps I am a bit too harsh here. Were it not for the toad, I'd never have connected this race with Warhammer.
The Dwarfs – They use firearms and heavy armour, while having a culture with an extreme emphasis on grudges, though the author seems to avoid that word for some strange reason.
These three are pretty much just Warhammer factions, except much more bare-bones than in the Warhammer universe. It makes the entire fic seem like the author wanted to write a Warhammer fanfic but didn’t want to bother with all the lore, so they just took the bare bones and ran with that.
Honestly, the main reason this annoys me so much is that the rest of the story is pretty good. The main character is great and I love how he genuinely starts caring for the rats and the reasoning for sticking with them, despite their filthy nature. I do not understand at all why this isn’t hinted at in the synopsis though. The current synopsis makes the story seem like a much more conventional army-building fic. “The Ratmen General” sounds way more intriguing imo, without giving people any false expectations. I suppose it might be too constricting for the future.
The battles are also - molenirRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5As the title says. I'm done with Rats. Sadly this story is not. It wouldn't be so bad except for a couple of issues.
First I get tired of the frequent pov shifts. They rarely add to a story, and with this one I started just rolling my eyes every time another showed up.
2nd I hate Rats. That should say everything. I enjoyed the first chapter. That's it If the mc ever manages to get up to the surface and start dealing with humans an elves an such, maybe this story will start to be interesting. - Lurker LuuuurkRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This could have been a very good story. Unfortunately the MC ends up being insufferable. Definitely the kind of person that walks into traffic, and then blames the driver for getting hit. Which would be interesting, but seems unintentional.
He was written fairly well. Though maybe it just wasn't clear that he was gonna march full on into woe is me territory. To be fair he does admit to being a hypocrite before this. And to (upon looking back) having a fridge temp IQ.
If you like MCs that feel sorry for themselves. But don't go full Randidlly ghosthound ! This is the one for you.
