- BobCharlieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started this story on a whim a couple weeks back. If I'm being honest, i liked the cover, and the title was intriguing. Then I read the blurb, and had to give it a shot.
I will say that I am not fully up to date on the story, between writing and working, it's hard to find spare time, but I've made a habit of reading a chapter a night for the last week or so. And not only has it gotten better with each chapter, this story is written with such raw emotion that even a robot like me couldn't help but be moved.
If I had to sum up the writers style, it would be a single word. Powerful. This is no kiddie land ride through the park, it is very realistic, and it hits hard.
The story itself is very, very good. It's extremely engaging, and is an immediate rollercoaster ride of suprises. I don't want to give too much away, but the Story is about Ned Cartwright, a caring teacher who goes out of his way to protect his students, only to find himself paying the ultimate price. In the strange new world he finds himself in, he has to come to grips with what he lost, as well as survive through everything that now lies ahead of him, and his shape shifting UI partner.
The grammar was excellent, but I will be honest on this one and admit that my grammar isnt worth a can of spinach, so I'll go ahead and let you be the judge.
And finally, the Characters. Not only are they life-like and interesting, but the dialogue itself is spot on. I seriously recommend giving this story a shot. I'm honestly baffled that it hasn't garnered a lot more attention than it has.
And to the author, thank you for the chapters!! I have enjoyed every single word this far, and I will get caught up asap! I'm realizing that learning how to write is hella time consuming😂 - KaeinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So we'll start with the gripes. Don't worry they are minor, you gotta eat your peas before you have your dessert.
So early part of the book the pacing is very slow. The initial act is pretty good but then it slows way down as Ned spends months training and chilling in a safe zone at the beginning. It's said he felt a lot of grief and sadness at this stage, but his emotional state felt kinda rushed by. Mostly we just see him experimenting with his powers and breaking the world with odd glitches that the gods then reward him moderately useful skills in exchange for finding. Neat stuff, but it drags on for quite some time.
Finally when he leaves the story picks up and it gets good. The characters are great, the world is both intriguing and also a lot more dark than expected, and Ned gets to really show off his stuff. He's a compassionate man, but his compassion has limits and he's not above dealing some damage if he has to and he's proof that school teachers shouldn't be underestimated.
The characters he meets along the way are incredibly likable for the most part and are the highlight of the story. Ned bounces well off of them and his growing friendship with his companions feels earned and real. Despite them all knowing each other only a week or so, they all become fast friends despite starting out as enemies.
The combat is fleshed out well and feels weighty. You don't lose too much track of what's going on and it paints a good picture. It serves it's story well enough.
My only other gripe is that it's just not long enough. The author said this can be a standalone story and they are technically right but it feels like the story had just stood on it's feet when it ended and that pains me. The author really came into their groove during the climax and I hope they continue the story because it's got potential to be an absolute banger, and as it stands based on what's written it's pretty good.
If you want to see a schoolteacher act like the most methodical beta tester/Ise - smythynotiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoyed this story so far. I read all 23 chapters that have been written so far, and I must admit I had a hard time putting it down. My only disappointment so far was that there are only 23 chapters!
The story fits the basic mold of transported to a fantasy/game world, It would have been easy to fall into the standard stereotypes that most of have seen many time, but I felt like this story has a unique approach.
The story is crunchy, numbers wise. It doesn't seem to have levels, but instead focuses on leveling skills. The main character in fact looks to exploit those skills and is encouraged by the game to find bugs and take advantage of them.
If you want to try something new and fun, you should give this one a chance. I can only encourage the author to keep it coming, this is good stuff!
