- Cosmia45Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0It is well befitting of Olubean to turn the world of superheroes on its head in just a few chapters. Potential readers if you think you’re going to get something standard based on the first couple pages I assure you you’re wrong. At the time of me writing this there are only five chapters out, I do not know how the rest of this story will play out. What I can say is that it’s great so far and is highly likely to get even better. I base this judgement on developments in the story I won’t get into. Let’s just say I’m eagerly anticipating seeing what the protagonist does from here.
At the core of the story is Remy, a not-so agreeable kid who goes through some intense experiences. I’m not sure what kind of person he is exactly by the end of the fifth chapter. He’s gone through some life changing events, and we’re going to find out what exactly they came to. Besides Remy the most prominently featured character so far is his sister Amelia, who is nearly impossible to dislike. She’s funny, she’s charming, she’s a relentlessly good person, and epitomizes hard work. One of those siblings that’s so good anyone would find it difficult to get out of their shadow. Remy’s parents contribute to that difficulty, but not to the excessive degree you may see in other stories. They’re openly and rightfully proud of her, and that has an effect.
There are other characters, but it’s too early to say much about them. Especially not without delving into spoiler territory. It’s also a near certainty that there are important characters that have yet to be introduced. So yeah, I could say more but it’s probably better to save more in depth commentary until more of the story comes out. I’m hooked and if you give this story a chance you probably will be too. - Kyuuri27Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Read the first chapters of Rank Hero Retribution and I will most definitely keep up with it going forward, not only as a fan of Olu's work, and a fan of this story's "prequel", but also as someone invested in Remy's journey so far.
I love the futuristic megalopolis and the hero-centered society set up early, which makes the reveal of their corruption later on that much more impactful and makes Remy's ultimate goal seem that much more steep and complicated. I'm curious to see how he aims to achieve it when the odds are stacked against him, and where this revenge story will go.
Talking about Remy, I particularly like the family dynamic, specifically with his older sister, turned mentor. The dialogue flows nicely, the interaction feels natural, and although Remy isn't my favorite character, I'll be waiting to see him fully developed.
Another part I adored reading is the exchange with the superhero Midnight, my favorite segment of the story so far, just for showing that the Superhero Industry isn't this simple single-minded evil organization but is made up of more complex individuals. This makes Remy's revenge much more complicated and interesting.
Overall, I'll keep tuning into RHR to see where this story goes, and I most definitely recommend it! - OnyxraidenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was honored to be asked to read this story and I must say I was captivated. While the first chapter felt a little slower than my liking the rest of the story picked up and I was intrigued!
The relationship between Amelia and Remy made me wish I had siblings to experience that bond! - TognkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve only read the first 5 chapters, but they were definitely interesting.
Style: Started off kinda slow, but the author did an amazing job with the setting and the identities of the main characters. The story almost makes you feel like you’re there experiencing it; whether that be how the fights are described, how Remy feels about his powers, or even during the demise of a specific character.
Story: Superhero society with ranks. The story follows a family with very odd powers and by the end, the main goal for Remy(one of the main characters) is to climb his way up the ranks to bring the whole association down. The powers and the whole system around them are different but also kinda familiar; of course there’s things like flight and super strength but I’m mainly talking about the powers of the main cast. I never really imagined eternal insomnia to be a superpower but the story definitely makes it interesting.
Grammar: Felt like this was good throughout the story. Definitely makes the story a little more exciting.
Character: Other than probably character descriptions, which probably doesn’t really matter beyond the main cast, I don’t really have any complaints. Remy’s feelings toward his powers are relatable and his relationship with his sister really helps with his character development.
Definitely looking forward to future chapters. If you like superheroes and revenge stories, this should definitely be right up your alley. - berylbunny23Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is the first of Olu’s writings that I have read, but it certainly will not be the last. I love the “corrupt superhero” trend as of late, as the idea of those who were supposed to be protectors turning out to be the ones who we need to be saved from is an interesting dichotomy.
The character of Remy is an interesting one, as he comes off as an underdog who wants to do a seemingly impossible task after being dealt a terrible tragedy. I must say that the pacing of the building of his character is a little rushed, but with the development of the first two arcs, he’s getting fleshed out a lot better.
The style of the story is pretty seamless, but maybe some more detail about the ranking system in the future could be interesting. The grammar of the story was perfect from what I have seen so far, and the vocabulary was perfect as well.
The characters introduced thus far are also interesting and easy to connect with, especially Remy, as his journey is an interesting one I want to see and hear more about. And the story so far is easy to follow but engaging. My only critique is to maybe do some more “show not tell”, but otherwise, this piece is awesome, and I look forward to more! - readerviyaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0this book has so much potential, and you can already see it in the first few chapters.
i love how we can really see the build up of characters, especially remy, from his backstory and how he went from being uninterested in becoming a hero to being this driven to becoming one of the top heroes.
i also love jay and their dynamics, i think him and remy compliment each other well.
how the story is written is very nice and doesn’t have long paragraphs that may annoy some (personally, i hate long paragraphs), it is well-phased and doesn’t dwell on one scene. there are a few grammar mistakes but they’re not too noticable.
kudos to author for reaching out and showing me this masterpiece, will definitely continue to read. - theqweenizzyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So this is an amazing story with a fantastic concept. I absolutely root for the main character and I love how fast paced the story is!!
I love the world building and how you can get immersed in reading the story. It's a very easy read and an interesting world you can easily get sucked into. Totally would recommend to sci fi lovers!! - maddiegreybruvRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After reading the first five chapters, I am invested in the character and the possible growth to come in character development. The character, to me, can either go hero path or villain path based on his experiences and losses he’s had. I am not usually a superhero book lover but the first five chapters had me invested in the characters and wanting to see more. In addition to this, the family dynamics could play a vital role in the story line with an overly hopeful father, protective mother, and siblings with their own set of struggles. The sister was the golden child of the family and clearly was praised in the home but how she felt about herself contradicts how her parents and brother view her. The little brother is set to live up to a certain standard by his father yet held back by his mother and his own beliefs about himself. The bond between him and his sister is a main relationship and building block for the continuation of the story. The universe in which this story set up is unique and utopian. I like the incorporation of social media and ranking system with the super hero’s, emphasizing modern day qualities.
- febe44Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Even though the story at first seemed to be something I wouldn't like, I quite enjoyed the first chapters! I have never read a story with superhero characters (but I do really like superhero movies) so I don't have anything to compare this story to, but I thought it was good.
The story is told from Remy's perspective and I liked how the first chapters were spread over the years (from when he was only a little kid to a teenager) because then you really get a good view of the main character. I do think I still need some more context to know all of the characters better because now you only see the surface of them. However, the sibling dynamic between Remy and Amelia was described perfectly.
The story is really thrilling and makes you want to read on as you can't really predict how the story will continue. For example, I am excited to read how Remy will take revenge.
Furthermore, I also liked the style of writing. It was really easy to read and the chapter were not long at all.
I could not stop reading and I am really excited to read the rest of the book. - lazylucidRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Rank Hero Retribution by Olubean
This book is a more darker and twisted take on the superhero sub genre with some added mystery and detective work this story reminds me a little of the boys + mha so if you’re into either of those try this book out!
The author does a great job at building tension, dread and intrigue through a handful of chapters that set the tone for the story as well as having an easy to engage plot due to the writing style making it easy to be immersed in.
I enjoyed seeing the relationship and dynamic between Remy and his sister Amelia it was sweet and tragic I’m interested to see how the rest of Remy’s story unfolds ALSO I sense a “haunt the narrative” in this which I love!
Remy seems to be a promising MC i’m curious to see how he’s going to face all the trial and tribulations in the story as well as the antagonists we’ve been introduced to theres a few interesting characters that I’d like to see more of.
Overall RHR is a story bursting with potential, the dark mystery plaguing the hierarchy of superhero society, a fast paced story with an engaging plot, dark and twisted villains, the magic/power system is also another interesting concept this is wholly unique to the RHR world.
