- JoJoTKobeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Back in the year of 2012, there was a little anime called Sword Art Online that aired. Its initial concept of many thousands of people trapped in a virtual MMO, in which game death equals real death and the only way out is beating the game, was very compelling. However, its execution left much to be desired.
What does that have to do with this fiction, you say?
Radical-9 is a story that starts from a similar initial concept as SAO, though already in the beginning chapters we can see that the world inside and outside the game is much more fleshed out. In the writing there seems to already be seeds for further development in terms of both the characters and the world. I really enjoy especially the parallel sub-plot of the protagonist's sister that's occuring while the protagonist is stuck in the game. And the theme interwoven of the game being a metaphor for the dangers of escapism adds a lot as well!
The author's experience very much shows in their writing, with descriptive first-person narration that also tells us a lot about the narrator. Dialogue feels very fitting as well, though sometimes it as well as the dialogue can get a bit trope-y anime-y (example: Klein the buddy pal of the protagonist or Athena the cool beautiful girl).
In terms of grammar, the writing is also pretty superb, with only a few grammar issues.
Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who's a fan of the trapped of the game concept. Looking forward to reading on and seeing where the author takes the story!
