Queen of Arabesk
Community Rating
Description
Arne was happy just administrating his carefully constructed criminal enterprise - a bit of murder here, some extortion there, a few poisonings and a riot - when the Queen of Arabesk called for his services. But the thing about being forced into service by a creature infinitely scarier than yourself is that it never just ends at an orgy or two in the company of a violent life-mage and a curiously gender-fluid torturer. Before you know it, the tentacles of unfathomable primordial powers are up your nose and down your pants (metaphorically speaking) and the only viable action you have left is to go and save the world.
>> Dark funny fantasy for grownups – This work of fiction contains a lot of death, drug use, executions, some torture, and orgies (rarely simultaneously and there are no overtly described sex scenes in great detail, but you know how magic-fuelled orgies are...) It also featuresdeeplyunethical main- and side characters. Reader discretion is advised!

- CheyenneDeBordeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story really wastes no time and already cuts to mysteriously high stakes, distinct and bantering charaters, a creepy monster, and a sense of humor that's pretty funny against the aggressiveness of the situation. The dialogue has really caught me; snappy, interesting. It's only chapter two (three?). Looking forward to where it heads from here.
- GrinRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0TL;DR : it's good, the blurb is on point.
First off, the thing that hit me the most with this novel is that it's delightfully unsettling at times. It is very creative, and the style is used to make small details stick with you. The descriptions aren't heavy, the ones describing the environment are adequate, but the ones about the characters and how things feel are very striking. I don't know why but it reminds me of the Dresden files.
Characters are well fleshed out, with their likable points and flaws, plus they all seem to have intricate backstories that are drip fed to us, keeping us wanting more while still scratching the itch.
The mystery and intrigue of the story is very well balanced in the same way too. The banter is nice, and a big part of the humour. Conversations do feel a tiny bit contrived at times, but most often they flow very naturally.
I think it's a bit early to judge the story, but right now I'm hooked. It's interesting, logical and unpredictable. No plot-holes I noticed. You can feel it's been prepared, and I'll be happy to follow along and see where it leads.
No grammar mistakes, and the style's very solid. Not the best I've read, but definitely way above average.
Also, I need to see Toog torture someone. Please. I beg of you.
Thanks for writing !
