- Z.F.ZimoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hey there,
Just finished reading your posted chapter, and I have to say: This is insanely good stuff.
I'm currently grinding away at the opening of my own high-fantasy novel, and reading yours was like a wake-up call. Your blend of "biochemical horror meets hellish fantasy" is both vicious and cool, and it gave me a ton of inspiration.
There are a few things I'd love to learn from you:
You drop mysteries like it's nothing: Who is Alex? Why was he in a flesh-pod? What's with the worm? What are the dragon riders doing?… The reader has no time to zone out; we're just as confused and thrust into the action as Alex is. I need to study this pacing.
Your fight scenes read like an action movie: The cells counter-attacking the parasite, hardening against dragonfire, shredding the redcaps… The descriptions of the morphing combat are clear and brutal, the visuals just stampede into your brain. I'm taking notes on this choreography.
The atmosphere shifts are masterful: From the grotesque flesh-ship, to the grand despair of the hellscape, to the deceptive tranquility of the swamp that hides rot… And that twist in the hag's hut from "cozy to charnel house" literally gave me chills. I need to figure out how you pull off this emotional whiplash.
One tiny thought (just my two cents): Alex's abilities seem quite comprehensive from the get-go—flight, consumption, shapeshifting, regeneration, analysis… It feels a bit like he started with a max-level character in a starter zone. Maybe introduce some limitations later? Like over-regeneration consumes memories, or morphing into complex items requires specific materials? That could add more conflict and a sense of progression. But hey, that's just me thinking out loud. The core hook of your story is already incredibly strong.
Seriously, this is the kind of high-fantasy opening I aspire to write: weird, fierce, unpredictable, and instantly addictive. I'm genuinely hooked and begging for more. Would love to chat more and learn how you balanc - CoconutPirateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think it’s a cool fanfic-style story. A very interesting character with unique abilities wakes up following the events of baldurs gate. He doesn’t know that it’s a game, it’s more like an interesting background to place the MC into. It seems pretty cool and I’m excited to read more.
- DahakStazRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am writing this review minutes after finishing the last chapter so my toughts are still fresh and focused on what I feel.
If you are looking for a story that will make you invested in the characters and absorbed in the World they live in then you found it.
If you want to read a complex and gripping tale of Epic adventure then start reading.
The story evolves as well as the MC as you read further and further, the deeper you are the more you want to read.
I have only geniuine prise to the Author for his hard work and that he finished it.
The only thing I could possibly complain about is the fact that the beggining of the story is little worse then the rest, you can feel the Author is learning as he goes.
Still, the whole story has a score of 11/10 from me.
It was time well spend reading it. - Ryan HelmboldRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fantastic prototype fic. While sure theres some things that could be improved like being a bit more descriptive of the environment, its still a fantastic fic. Also alex is a fantastic character, this one being very heroic, and its soooo satisfying to read. Also alex's progression in power is super satisfying to read too.
- The CuratorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First of all, I love Prototype and Alex Mercer from the first game. While I found him quiet and brooding in the best way, the second game’s version of the story didn’t click with me. Thankfully, the author seems to share that sentiment and has wisely chosen to ignore Prototype 2 entirely, focusing instead on the raw, chaotic brilliance of the original’s themes.
The story of Prototype’s Gate feels like a love letter to fans of the series while also carving out its own unique identity. From the very beginning, the writing pulls you in with high-energy action scenes and a dark, brooding atmosphere reminiscent of the first game. The author captures the essence of Alex Mercer’s character flawlessly—his sharp wit, internal conflict, and moments of raw humanity come across as authentic and compelling.
What impressed me most was the pacing. The story never drags, and the transitions between action-packed moments and introspective scenes are handled smoothly. The world-building is equally strong, adding depth to the setting while retaining the gritty, urban horror feel that fans of the series will recognize.
For fans of LitRPG elements, this story doesn’t disappoint. The integration of powers and progression fits naturally within the narrative, enhancing rather than distracting from the plot. If you’ve been longing for a Prototype-style experience with rich storytelling and characters that truly shine, this is a must-read. - Wizardly DudeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story throws the reader headfirst into a smash up between the worlds of Prototype and Baldur's Gate, and man is this a cool combination. I'm a huge sucker for fan fiction where a beloved character is thrown into a different world following different rules, allowing them to shine even brighter, and this story does exactly that.
Story: We have the main character from Prototype, Alex Mercer, tossed into the magical world of Baldur's Gate. The whole point of the story is getting to see the MC's bio based powers fair in a magical setting, and he does more than just okay for himself.
Style: The author's writing style is clean and straightforward, focusing heavily on the facts, and filled with detailed descriptions. This makes it very easy to picture the different characters in your mind, and is a nice refresher for those who haven't played either of the two games the story is based on in a bit!
Grammar: Nice and neat, no issues to report!
Character: The MC is portrayed well, and the author remains true to the game he snagged him from. He's a jagged, merciless man, and I really enjoyed hearing his inner monologue as he worked on figuring out his strange new situation.
Overall, an excellent combination of two worlds, and I'd definitely recommend it if you like Prototype and/or Baldur's Gate. - AstraldudeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What an insane prototype story! I found it very interesting especially from the cover and title of the story and the fact that it has 308,918 views makes me jealous in a good way! This story is grim-dark, though there isn't a tag it very much seems like it. I love stories like this and the fact that it has a gripping main character named "Alex". His character arc is already hooking readers. Now, I'd like to glaze this character more, but we've got to get to other things. It's style is pretty interesting, and very vivid. Every word is a scene in my head that I could see. But the way is dark and gritty, giving me Invincible vibes for some reason. Grammar is perfect from what I've read and I don't know how the author thought of this series, but he sure made a heck of a novel that readers would read for the entire night! If this book series blows up in the next 8 years, I wouldn't be surprised at all.
- XylarianRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I don't know anything about the prototype story itself, but this story is highly imaginative, filled with dynamic scenes and intense battles. The narrative grips the reader with its relentless pace and dark fantasy themes.
Alex is intriguing, with his shapeshifting abilities and hints of a troubled past adding depth. I'm looking forward to his emotional arc development further down the line.
The writer excels at creating a grim, visceral atmosphere, but the story could benefit from tightening sentence structures and fixing run-ons to improve the pacing.
Overall I would say good story, that can be enjoyed even if you don't know the original game and I would definitely give it a read. - GrumpsterRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Prototype Gate blends both horror, fantasy and action into a rich world, the writing is generally quite humorous at times and is very engaging, a true page turner for the readers. The world is very gritty and it's not something that I'd typically see on Royal Road, with some amazing details, especially with the vivid action sequences. Prototype Gate has surprised me to be a pretty well written story.
- RedMistRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'm going to be honest, I don't know all that much about the Baldur's gate universe, but, though this story, I'm getting more and more invested into it.
All the people described make for a very entertaining story. The adventures that the MC goes on are recounted quite well. Even when I look up some places online, they look very similar to what the author describes.
Can't really go on to say if the characters act as they should since I haven't played Baldur's gate for my self, but, what I can say, I do enjoy how the characters acted so far.
As for the MC, I like the way Alex develops his character and eventually starts finding his place in this new world along his friends, even if it takes some adventures to get him moving.
To be frank, this isn't a very in depth review, though I would still recommend you give this a read. Even if it is just the first 10 chapters.
