- gliglithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It has been a good while since I've read a sci fi novel, and I think I'm going to have to seriously consider reading more of them after dipping into Project Gaia. After the first chapter, I knew I was in for something fun, quirky, and different, and every following chapter did not disappoint.
Something I really love about this story is its intense world building that manages to combine an Asimov-esque meticulous attention to detail with a sense of humor and comedy akin to the Hitchhiker's Guide series. Along with that is the excellent meta-story of the different narrtors, each with their own distinct voices, motives and preferences that further serve the story. It also functions as a unique form of author notes where content warnings are woven into the fabric as a sort of tongue in cheek meta analysis that is just so sci-fi.
Grammar and formatting is tight, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the almost episodic storytelling (almost, there are overarching events and smaller plotlines as well). The different alien races are just amazing, and ate all described in detail that paints an excellent picture. There is also a good deal of jokes at humanity's expense that somehow end up humanizing the aliens. Overall, it's a wonderful and incredibly creative story that is well worth your read. - Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't tend to read high Sci-fi, mostly because I'm stupid rather than disliking a great genre. However, Eve makes such great characters with such compelling storytelling.
The humor and plot paired with an interesting world build is top notch and it's no wonder this story has been recommended to me so much.
The addition of these being treated as case files also fill the part of my soul that loves unconventional storytelling. - Consistent MilkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pretty interesting world in the making. The writing style of the author is distinct and refreshing. Although there are some typos, there were nothing in the first two chapters that broke my immersion.
The premise of a 'star harvester' just disappearing has been an eye catching mystery that I am eagerly looking forward to being solved. Makes me wonder how something so massive as what I can only assume is similar to the concept of a 'Dyson Sphere' can vanish just like that. Looking forward to how the author manages to bring various ideas presented together. - LasozoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Like a kid that doesn't like vegetables, I don't like heavy sci-fi. However this chad author just logged on RR, and cooked this absolute piece of fiction and slap whatever dislike for vegetables I had. Now you got me hooked, and you better finish this story (it's too short), or else
- BellwetherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0And so is the story. Criminals, Praying Mantis, AI - mix of it make this story similar to a rollercoast ride. What would happen next - you find yourself wondering. The author has an unusal writing patterns, making themselves an integral part of the story.
My point is, I guess, that you should try Project Gaia. And camomile tea. - Slifer274Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I do enjoy well-executed sci-fi, and while I haven't gotten that far into Project Gaia, it sure is shaping up to be one of them. It's got dealing with interplanetary racism, it's got real crunchy numbers for space travel, it's got a sassy AI--all the ingredients for a fun time. Also, I really like the "official" log-like formatting of the fic--has kind of an SCP vibe, which I think adds a lot of flavor.
- TempleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You know those "heavy" sci-fi stories where it's full of futuristic science stuff? I normally don't read those. Sure, I'll read stories with sci-fi elements, but I normally avoid "heavy" hard sci-fi because there's so much science stuff that it gets overbearing.
This story isn't like that. It's hard sci-fi on the heavy side, but somehow managed to attract even me. And that's really awesome writing. It's the way it's written that it just feels easy to get into compared to other sci-fi novels. - YXplorerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's the adventure of a lost astronaut on her way through a "new" civilization. Or maybe it's the adventure of four passionate researchers doing their paperwork, I'm not too sure. The story is really great, sci-fi is good and lots of very good puns and inside jokes. I also really appreciated the way the author interact with the reader.
Style score (5/5) - A truly unique style. Hard to define it, but I loved it. Jokes here and there, funny details lost to the reader's discretion, interactions with the reader, ins and outs of the story with the presence of the mysterious editors... It's a full world on its own, and it's really refreshing and well done. The unique signature of this story, for sure. You should give it a try, just for that feel.
Story score (4.5/5) - A good story starting up, lots of things to learn since the world building is rich, and there are a lot of technicals stuff, but it has never been boring. Funny maybe, but never boring. At worst the action is slow.
Grammar score (5/5) - I've found no grammar problem. I may have divergent opinions regarding the usage of inlet trans-conductors and iodised neutrino-gravo-coolants than the ETHC, but that's a different kind of grammar.
Character score (5/5) - Character are kings in the story. Be it non humans (I don't mean to be rude), humans or AI, I've liked them all. Nicely drafted and all very funny in their own way, you've got a nice crew here!
An very unique style. Actually, everything is good, but that style really gives it an amazing, particular aura. Whoever you are and whatever you like, you should give it a go, it's superb. Good times garanteed! - ccaramelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Initial Thoughts:
A solid opening few chapters leading into the story forecasts an interesting story to come. Love the format that the chapters open with. Not a sci-fi nut, but it's enjoyable here. Looking forward to seeing how it continues when I have more time to read.
Style:
The style of the story, being logs recorded with footnotes provided for terms which are rooted in the fantasy of this world, works perfectly to convey the aesthetic theme of the novel while also working to fill in the reader with missing information as well as immerse themselves as someone experiencing files rather than simply experiencing the story. Meta.
Grammar:
The rare issues I see are unobstructive, and the only problems with grammar are contained within the dialogue, which is only natural and realistic.
Story:
Promising to start, interested in seeing how it progresses.
Character:
Solid characterization, enjoyable read, development will be necessary to see.
Conclusion:
Pick up if you're interested in good sci-fi reading, or even if you aren't. As a non-fan of the genre, this does it very well and tackles serious subjects with good intent alongside providing a compelling start to the series. Great format for the various chapters and introductions to lore snippets. - NatarajaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A good read even if the emotions of the characters and the culture shock could be more developed.
- Style & Grammar
This is well written, no grammar, syntax nor style issues. The layout is good which makes the text pleasant to read. However, English is not my native language, so I may have missed some things...
- Story
There is a real plot and it starts with a bang in chapter 1. A gigantic ship (exploiting a star?) has disappeared and the MC has to find it. Sadly, there are complications because he must not be noticed by the locals while passing by. We enter at once in the story! Unfortunately the two following chapters are less interesting, I did not want to leave Dottie :( I have the impression that the author does not know too much where she goes and how to manage the interactions of the MC with the locals. The culture shock could be exploited with more subtlety too.
- Character
Dottie is interesting, driven, intelligent. It makes you want to know more about her past and her personal goals. Unfortunately these last points are not very developed, nor are her emotions. It's the same for the secondary characters. The world could be much richer by integrating these aspects!
