Description

In a near-future courtroom, a woman sues the creators of a device that predicts its owner's emotions ten seconds into the future—blaming it for her lost lottery fortune. As the judge navigates absurd claims, ethical dilemmas, and quantum theories, the trial becomes a battle over fate, free will, and the power of emotional foresight. A satirical exploration of justice in a world where even feelings are no longer private.

This short story has a lot to untangle and at the core concept is the fact that the idea is posited the predictor can read the future emotion, but is it subject to change becomes the focus. There is a lot of back and forth, though on the basic premise the entire proceeding is a bit of a farce from a realistic legal standpoint. The argument itself about the infallibility and the case at hand is outside the bounds of the constraints. There is no resolution to this and that is probably the worst part - seeing it play out is denied to the reader. It is good, but it leaves the reader unfulfilled in the promise of an answer.
