- Sanguine RayzelRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's the early days yet, but so far this has been well written and promises an interesting story. I'm very much looking forward to whats coming.
Grammer has no issues that I noticed.
Style is fun, its too early for me to make out any distinct writting style but it flows well. - Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pokemon is one of those things that no matter how much I try to avoid fanfic, it sucks me back in. And then on top of that, I want to hear about the pokemon I have come to love being featured more prominently. Basically, I've been avoiding this fic because it boasts NEW pokemon. And man oh man, I'm so glad to have my assumptions so expertly dashed away.
TEZ manages to mix the lore and excitement from the games and manga and the fun tropey bits from the anime and mixes them quite well with Gamelit mechanics. Everything is clean and concise, and non-narrative moments don't take away from the narrative or vice versa. The pacing is well done and the action is sprinkled in to keep the reader wanting to continue reading.
I didn't see anything wrong with grammar, spelling, syntax, or anything else of that sort. Suggested edits are on, and that's all I can really hope for in these cases.
Almost every single pokemon story (fanfic or canon) is going to start out roughly the same way. While still using that formula, TEZ deviates from it, allowing a more organic feel to the story instead of the checklist of 'what happens in a pokemon story". The story itself is a classic case of rookie trainers versus evil team while also becoming a better trainer. However, there is mystery afoot in this new region with a greedy company not only taking over, but something about the region itself affecting how everything else works.
Slate is a top tier main character, which is saying something from me. I hate main characters. Authors are usually so focused on keeping the MC on a journey that they tend to become static and use secondary characters to bring in electricity. Slate, however, has a full fledged personality and is developed incredibly well. April is his perfect opposite, and their back and forth banter is consistently entertaining while also showing how loyal of friends they are.
Overall, this is a story I will keep coming back to. I absolutely love TEZ's writing, and as long as he pic - VioletMoonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Considering this story clearly markets itself through the lens of writing in an episodic format, I viewed this through the lens of perceiving it as Pokémon episodes, like from the OG anime. I found that it hits it nearly perfectly! I was incredibly impressed with the author's ability to stay true to the original content, even as they were creating an entirely new region. It hit me hard in the feels, and I felt the same childlike joy I did the first time I watched pokemon.
Overall: 5/5. The first ten chapters blurred by, and I found myself feeling immersed in a new region based off of nut-names, which cracked me up all by itself. The sheer amount of effort and care the author took to bring the whole package elevated the story for me. I enjoy things more if the author takes it seriously, and you can tell the author put a lot of work into making this a good experience beyond just being a well-written fanfic.
Style: 5/5. I didn't notice an issues whatsoever here. The style was consistent, clean, and concise.
Grammar: 5/5. No issues noted while reading. If they were there, they were very minor and didn't detract from readability.
Story: 5/5. This feels like being in the game or anime. The plot wasn't crazy original, but that would've defeated the purpose. The plot felt like something that would show up in a pokemon game, and I loved it for that! New trainer goes to new region and has his mom kidnapped? Now has to meet the regional professor and go on a journey? More than good enough for me. Nicely done here, author.
Character: 4.5/5. I only dinged this because at times I felt like the characters responses didn't make that much sense. I also felt at times that he didn't have enough personality to make him incredibly distinct. The protagonists of pokemon are almost universally powered by friendship and intensity, and the MC in this one felt disjunct with that. It just didn't seem to match, I guess? He felt like a real person, which doesn't match the world being created th - Icarus JaadiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As the review title said, this is really what a Pokemon storyline should be. What I mean is, there is a serious plot mixed with the usual theme of Pokemon where the adventure should begin. It doesn't need to be realistic that much; as long as the story progresses along with the protagonist, on his way to the vast, fantastical world of Pokemon.
Style: The writing style is good. You can imagine what's happening or where the protagonist is heading to. At the end of each chapter, the author provided a brief description of the character and Pokémon's design, as well as official artwork.
Story: The first chapter really got me. I didn't expect it to have that much tension, but I managed to get used to it as the story progressed. Well, originally, Pokémon stories had softer villains than this.
Character: What I liked about the characters was that they had realistic thoughts on their psychological concepts, which added to the story's intensity.
Overall, this is a good Pokemon fanfic with a good writing style and well-thought-out characters. Aside from the original Pokemon character designs, I'll keep reading and hoping for a different twist than what Pokemon usually has. - IxtaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's a mystery in this new region of the Pokemon world, and I'm keen to find out what's going on. The story is well-written thus far, with a main character I find interesting and likeable, and plot hooks that make me look forward to seeing how it all unfolds. The author has also designed and illustrated his own Fakemon which adds some extra flavor.
- A.T. OliverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I haven't played Pokemon since the original Gold release. This is also the first time I've read anything pokemon related so I didn't know exactly what to expect going in. With that said, saying I'm glad I started reading is an understatement.
Story: I was immediately grabbed in Chapter 1, and that grabbing did not stop even as I finished Chapter 5. I won't dive into spoiler territory, but what Slate goes through and the people and pokemon he meets are both plausible and realistic—at least for a Pokemon story.
The tone of the story is something I found extremely enjoyable, as it weaved in elements of mystery and corruption in a way that reminded me of the way things work in the real world. Surprisingly, those elements fit perfectly in a setting based on Pokemon journeys as a trainer. Great job!
Style: 99% of the time I enjoyed TEZofAllTrades's style, it was not difficult to read and the flow felt natural throughout. The one thing that personally stood out to me as odd was a transition in Chapter 1 where Slate falls asleep during a conversation with his mother.
The reader can pretty easily assume he was tired and fell asleep after being reassured by his mother, but I feel it could have used a little more build-up. Beyond that, no complaints.
Character: Slate, the main character felt realistic in his thoughts and reactions given his young age. The characters and Pokemon he meets are entertaining, but also show individualistic quirks that are reminiscent of how real people act. I also really want Cryote's to be real.
Grammar: In my time reading I really only found 1 grammatical error, Could I find more if I ran it through Grammarly? Maybe. That said, I couldn't find anything else out of place and it was very readable!
Overall: All in all, my expectations going in were high, but uncertain as to what kind of story would be told. I left FAR from disappointed and hungry for more. Well done! - AKHRIF AYOUBRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like the story, it was a creative idea, also I like the artworks.
Hope you came with another season and not stop your work here.
You are a writer, don't write just for views.
You can share it in other platforms, maybe that would ive you more views and interactions. - lordearthRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style:
While I was reading the story, I could imagine in my head what it felt like to play a Pokemon game with Slate as the main character. The interactions and narrations presented in the story flowed really well with the style of the game, which I really liked. I also really liked the illustrations at the end of each chapter! 5/5.
Story:
The story on the whole made sense, albeit a bit forced at places in order to make Slate embark on his journey with a single pokemon, on his own. In the Pokemon games, the premise of going on an adventure was not explained extensively (other than you're old enough so off you go collecting Pokemon for the Pokedex), but as a story, Pokemon Slate Gray has to fill in this gap. I think that the author did a commendable job given the circumstances, it certainly looks easier than it probably is.
The author also seems to have a lot of background knowledge about Pokemon and/or done extensive research prior to the writing of this story, which definitely shows, so good job!
Grammar:
A few errors here and there, but nothing that majorly detracts from the story.
Character:
The characters (including the Pokemon) were realistic and believable, and were ample for an action adventure story like this one. - RohalussWorldRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Remind me to finish this review when the story ends

Anyway! Let's yap a little bit before I decide to make it a serious review. However, I don't know much about Royalroad review tradition and biases, so if you really want to read my unhinged, unbiased, and unprompted comments (as well as fanart features) come to my tumblr and enter the interogation room or something.
If you found me from royalroad fanfic featuring my fanarts on their story, hi! Hello. This story is the one that made me decide that some good story should not left unillustrated. I restarted a royalroad account because of this story, so for the cute art I make for author here, half of the motivation credit goes to this author. That's the only sappy comment I will add to this review.
We're going to review the story slowly later. Remind me when it's 17 August, guys. - SeliMeliRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is one truly underrated Pokefic in my opinion. It's unique and interesting and I sincerely wish people would give it a chance.
To start with the reason most people hesitate to read this, the Fakemon of this new Region are a feature, nor a bug. There's solid art of them in every chapter and they all have detailed, well thought out Pokedex entries, so they feel more like Canon additions to the universe. Discovering the new mons in this format gave me some serious nostalgia from the "Who's that Pokemon?" moments of the early anime era.
Style: This fic has a very original style that honestly suits the story to a T. It's reminiscent of the games and anime in the best ways. It has an episodic format coupled with an overarching plot that makes for an easy and engaging read. The battle style is also an interesting blend of mechanics that I haven't seen before.
Story: The story itself feels like a good mix of original game/anime plotlines. It features a just-moved-into-a-new-region protagonist, a criminal team doing shady (ha) things, a region full of mysteries and adventure, new Pokemon, new places, new trainers and gyms and all that good stuff. The stakes are high, the questions are many and the pace is fast. There are, however, some things you have to handwave off as game/anime logic, like the competence level of gym leaders in comparison to just-started-out-a-month-ago trainers.
Grammar: I didn't notice any obvious issues with the grammar, vocabulary or sentence structure. It was an easy read.
Characters: My biggest issue with this story are its characters.
SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD (I tried to keep them to a minimum, but yeah)
The characters we spend the most time with are Slate (the MC) and April. Both of them are 16 years old, but they both feel younger and are definitely more immature than their ages would imply. They act a lot like season 1 Ash and Misty I'd say, except Slate is less dumb than Ash was (he's ignorant about many things, but type match ups aren't amon
