Pokemon Origins: Training

Description

Most kids get to have ordinary adventures, the kind where they earn their badges, stop some crimes, make a few friends, and maybe get mugged once or twice. Me? I got sent back in time by a pushy green creature who wants me to free it from this strange gold and silver ball. Now I have to train the old-fashioned way, reinvent the poke ball from scratch, and deal with overly-aggressive wild Pokemon.

An ordinary adventure. Sure.

---

This story is similar toPokemon Legends: Arceus, but set in Johto and with Celebi as the central legendary. There will be inventions, pirates, research, war, stakeouts, ruins, peril, friendship... and training, of course.Lotsof training.

I'm really enjoying this so far. It's very different from your typical Pokemon SI for obvious reasons. I like the main character a lot. His interest in technology is great and his backstory justifies his knowledge of pokeballs and his ability to help reinvent them, but it doesn't make it super easy. He also has a lot to learn as a trainer but he doesn't hesitate to acknowledge that and learn from others. His overall reaction to what's happened to him is also really well written. Overall he's a great main character and I'd love to see him progress going forward.
To be honest though I'm not loving Florence so far. She comes off as arrogant and entitled despite having not really accomplished anything before the MC saves her. She also often treats the MC more like a subordinate or resource than a friend. She acts like he owes her information on the future but he has to drag information on Celebi out of her. She has positive traits as well. She has a connection to Celebi and a desire to help people that feels genuine. She definitely has potential as a character, but I'm really hoping that she gets more likable once she finally gets a partner and stops having as much of a chip on her shoulder.

This is great! After legends arceus I wanted to read more stories of ancient pokemon times and the author did an amazing job at portraying it.
the story is wasy to follow and interesting without being overly wordy. It has great pace and the growth of the characters is shown properly.
i cant wait to see how it continues to develop

I'm still figuring out Royal Road, so bear with me here,. This is my first review. :D
Pokemon Origins: Training is a Fic I've been following for quite a while in other sites, and I was delighted to see it caught up to date here too. Players of Legends: Arceus should be familiar with the concept: boy meets green fairy, shenanigans, boy gets stuck on the past and has to navigate a society completely unlike his own. It scratches that nice Outlander/Back to the Future itch while fully immersing in the vibrant world of (feudal?) Johto. Even more impressive is that Silentlysnowing came up with it years before the Legends game.
While we still haven't got to the meat of the time-travel plot (I'm eagerly awaiting), the story really shines on a few other aspects for me.
World-Building: There was a lot of care and thought put on how this world works. A driving force of the story is the craft of Pokéball making and how its invention changes the world and affects how trainers and Pokémon bond. A lot of it is still to happen, I'm sure, but as Monroe travels the region he gets to experience the change first hand. The interesting thing here is that by having a modern-day character as a protagonist, we can put ourselves into his frame of mind more easily. We know how modern day Pokémon works, but how did it get there? How war used to be and how it changed with the Pokéball? How did people with say, a Tentacruel, as a partner would travel then vs. now? How were the first Repel like? And so on.
Cast: Drowzee. The starter is a Drowzee! And he's adorable. Do I need to say more? The choice of Pokémon for the cast is often very inspired and they are all individual characters in their own right. As for the humans, they are delightful. Minor characters have their backstories flashed out (love you Jordan) and the main cast is great. Monroe is smart, but like any 10 year-old boy can a bit dense, Florence is headstrong and stubborn and Isaac can get quirky. Everyone has their moments to shine

I’ve read this up until the most recent chapter 78 on other sites. I really enjoy this story and am excited about the upcoming arcs. I’ll avoid significant spoilers in this review. For these early chapters, I enjoy watching how Monroe puzzles out between the Johto he knows and the one he is presented with. The story definitely has some minor mystery elements that feel a bit like a puzzle coming together. Furthermore l, the exploration of Pokeballs and how they work is fun and interesting and definitely sets this story apart.
As a starter Pausso (Drowzee) is honestly really nice and I enjoy how their relationship has early difficulties without relying on ignoring commands or stubbornness in battle to communicate these difficulties. The development of Monroe’s relationship with his Drowzee and how he grows up is heartwarming and handled satisfyingly.
The grammar and formatting never have any noticeable issues and so it reads well. Sometimes minor characters have dialogue that feels a bit too much like it comes from a quest NPC but main character dialogue doesn’t have that issue.
Overall, the story feels very comfy and light-hearted while being willing to handle interesting darker topics without getting stuck in that darkness. I quite enjoy reading new chapters and hope for more.

Note: I use a section-based format for clarity.
[Spoilers] and [Criticism] are marked with labels and separated cleanly so you can skip them.
Section breaks are indicated with underscores to make navigation easier.
By accident, I stumbled on this fanfiction when I missed the home button on the phone app, and I must say, it turned out to be one of the best mistakes I've ever made. The grammar is excellent, and the storyline is as original as it can get, except for maybe the Celebi time travel shenanigans—but hey, every story has to start somewhere, and I would be honestly surprised if people could still come up with something completely original. What's more, the protagonist has a starter Pokémon that is not commonly seen in fiction at all, let alone as a starter, which makes it stand out from the crowd of Charmanders and pseudo-legendaries that litter the genre.
    — Spoilers and Criticism Below —
While it's too early for me to comment on the characters or write a detailed review, as there isn't much to go on at the moment, I must say that I'm not a big fan of the "mysterious item that will be relevant to the plot later" trope. However, if it's not mentioned frequently, then I don't think it will subtract from the overall quality of the story.

It's ok. Its not exactly a new premise. The writing structure is alright. Though the character writing could use some work. It's not exactly easy to write from a childs perspective anyway though so I can't complain too much on that other than there being some inconsistencies in the level of intelligence the main character shows. The plot earlier on is a little rough, but fleshes out alright as it goes. Only till the most recent chapters did it seem ro really have a drop in quality again. Mainly due to the some plot points seeming hamfisted in, along with many being overused ideas. Plenty of people can get over an archetype or two. It does do some things well like starting with an interesting entry to the story, or utilization of some of the canonical lore. So its not as though all parts of the story are bad. There's plenty of potential.
All in all its ok. Not bad, not great. It has potential to be better overtime, as more of the plot and characters flesh out. Just not exactly something I'm willing to wait for with all the other things to read. To end I'll say to everyone who enjoys it, I hope you cantinue to enjoy it. For anyone who sees my review, give it a try anyways, maybe you find more enjoyment out of it than I did.

    Is the story complete?: NO
Did I drop the story?: YES
Is it hard to read?: NO
Did it do something to stand out?: YES
    Would I recommend it?: NO
    Thoughts:
A time travelling pokemon isekai is interesting especially when the it's the child of a pokeball engineer who is sent back to the Johto hisui era, it was honestly a little too slow paced for me though.
How I format my review, keep in mind they are for the readers not the authors:
    - The story starts with 5 stars.
    - I remove 1 star if it is not complete.
    - I remove 1 star if I dropped the story.
    - I remove 1 star if it's hard to read (odd word choice, grammar, etc).
    - I remove 1 star if it fails to do something that stands out. (Funny, Unique premise or perspective etc)
    - I remove the 1 to 1/2 if I would not recommend it to read regardless of score.
Thought: A summary of my personal take.
