- WartechRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'm not a fan of xianxia, but I quite liked it.
I gave 4.5 points because in my opinion this story is slightly lacking in a world building. Well the world it self is depicted quite nicely, but somehow (especialy as the mc got to the big city) I felt emptyness. Maybe some shouts of merchants at the market or some random talk (like at the gate) which mc hears while passing or simply some girls talking about mc's nice body could help out to flesh out the image of a bustling city. - AxoneRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I have read up to chapter 9 of this novel and have been very satisfied so far. This is a typical xianxia novel in many aspects: Talented youth; tragic past; enemies who can crush the protagonist like an ant etc. The cultivation system is easy to understand and anyone who has read such a story before knows how this is going to turn out.
Someone at this point might say “Isn’t this a bad thing?”. Actually no, not for this website. This is a story about a protagonist with abnormal talent. That is it. He doesn’t start with a special item, affinities with every element in existence or a pocket teacher to assist him. This has made the novel better in my opinion, for what we read is the product of his effort alone. I haven’t seen any other story on RRL yet where an xianxia protagonist starts with so few advantages.
The author hasn’t complicated things with how people in the protagonist’s world cultivate which leaves him to expand more on the story and world. Each chapter is lengthy and the grammar is above average. The author has a solid understanding of the written English language. The story has so far been well paced to the point where it is nearly indistinguishable to some of the best translated xianxia. I would compare it to Martial World without the plot armour. I like the mentality of the protagonist. It is a huge plus for me when I can follow the character’s train of thought.
Why only 4/5 then? Firstly this review is subject to the author actually continuing and hopefully finishing this novel at some point in the far future. Secondly this is a typical xianxia and thus has or will have all of its negatives (I personally don’t view the tropes of xianxia to be huge negatives but some do). Lastly no one can be perfect grammar wise when writing a novel. Editors would be paid less if it were so.
