Overkill: The Lightning Adept [Progression Fantasy]
Community Rating
Description
Robert Zeneki felt like an outcast in his home village of Mantlemount. On his 18th birthday, the day of his Awakening, he planned to get one of the most coveted Paths, that of the Mage, and eventually start a new life to prove that he's not the lying delinquent they believed him to be.
Despite his best efforts (that are admittedly not that good), Rob becomes an adventurer and sets out to fight monsters and level up. If he could only level up fast enough to fight the monsters that constantly threaten his life, then perhaps he would be able to live peacefully.
But some people are not destined for peace, least of all Rob.
I got tired of all the litrpgs with generic barbarians or pointlessly inflated stats, so I made my own. This is going to be a story where the main character either one shots something with Lightning, or nearly dies because his one strategy doesn't work.
(Also fair warning there's more rat killing than I thought there'd be early on, and I'm beginning to feel bad for them. I'm probably not gonna have any more rats appear later on.)
[I've come back from a month long break, and will be slowing down chapters for now. We'll see what schedule I end up with]
Warning:The main character is not intelligent, he will be making a lot of mistakes until at least chapter 40. If this doesn't appeal to you (As many people have let me know is the case in my comments) then you probably won't enjoy this story.
This is also my first time actually writing a full story. I've tried to plan everything out fully, but don't expect it to be perfect.

- AsassinDeadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You have managed to make an dumb main character who is entertaining to read about. I also think you have done a good job making him miss obvious things because he has a one track mind. I also think he has grown a little throughout the story which is important. My only recommendation is the title is a little generic and adding a subtitle might help distinguish it more.
- Grand Admiral BobRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you thought that any reveiw of this ELECTRIFIYING story would be free of SHOCKING puns, you do not understand the nature of the internet. I don't think there is any execuse for being NEGATIVE about this story. The writing is ENERGETIC! You could say that the expereince of reading is a BUZZ, though it shouldn't make your hair stand on end.
Seriously, this is pretty fun (as of 30 chapters) and while the MC is dumb as a bag of hammers, he is rather likable. - GravityfunnsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like what's been shown of the system so far, and based on the unique circumstances under which he awakened expect some interesting magical mechanics in the future. Unfortunately, it's not much to go off of just yet, by which I mean it's almost nothing, but I think it has potential.
- Mark LongRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I started reading this a few days ago and thought nothing of it. The reason is that there seems to be lot of new stories but all of the stories seems to have very complex beginning. It's hard to follow, during the hook of the story they did so much transition it made no sense.
Overkill has a few advantages over them. The plot is simple. Survival. No grand scheme or conspiracies at the beginning. A clean slate. It's able for me to bond with MC. Skill progression is simple and MC is overpowered but gets beaten to the point of near death. It's good, as it's not giving us an op character. There seems to be no grammar issues, as far as I can recognise.
I just enjoyed because it just simple progression litrpg. There is also the blue box.you can not miss the blue box. It's a must.
So all in all. I don't see anything bad with this novel. I see a lot of progression still possible without going too over the top. Give this one a chance. I think you will like it. - TheOldLord10256Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The title and summary of the book say it all. If you want a mage that will turn your best protector into a smoking piece of jerky then this is your guy. He may only have one shot in the tank but it damn well will be a tank shell of a spell.
The grammar of the book is well done and the style is wonderful. The world seems interesting and from what we have the lore might be pretty good too. The characters also had some fair depth while others didn't but that didn't really detract from the story.
Overall if magic weirdness is your style then I recommend reading what there is. While there hasn't been an update in quite a while as of the writing of this review the book is still pretty fun and worth a read through. - cake was never a lieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overkill is a great novel in my opinion, it’s very fun to read thinking about the upgrade choices of the main character and what’s gonna happen next in the story. All I really have to say is. The author is making a good story and I know writers block won’t last forever keep up the good work :)
- zahRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was scrolling through the royal road home page and saw this story, I figured I'd give it a shot and I'm plessently surprised at how good the quality is. the characters and their interactions are some of the besf I've read on the site and the powers introduced so far and really thought out and fun to read. would definitely recommend to anyone looking for something fun to pass the time.
- LadyFffireRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5they manage to write a dumb character that isn't incredibly annoying to read, rather than berating him for his cluelessness, i find myself rooting for his success. definetly enjoyable :DDD
lightning magic is also super cool. one of my favorite affinites as unlike fire, it doesn't feel basic and overdone. - CobbaltRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is one of the better LitRPGs that I've read on RoyalRoad recently. Most of all, it's fun to read. I like the MC; he's a fair bit naive, careless and reckless, but I think the author does a good job of stopping short of making him seem utterly stupid. I like that his "cheat", so to speak, is a product of his recklessness but still appears believable; and the resulting class is quite fun to read about. The writing started off as not so great, but it's been steadily improving over the course of 40 chapters. Overall, it's a decent read and I'm looking forward for more.
But, I don't think it deserves a perfect 5. Rob, the MC, has no direction other than to keep finding jobs to complete and level up. It makes for fun sessions of Numbers Go Up, but I'd like to see some greater direction to his character and the story.
The Mage Killer, his teacher's death, and the Necromancer Cult seem to be leading in that direction, so I'm optimistic, but as of the chapters currently out, this is good but not perfect. - SylgreineRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Hello there... this story is fantastic and sooo good. Its another system-rpg novel, but the presentation of characters, of places like towns and cities hace good details, but me blue labels from the prophile of the Mc, and the skill are a little simpple for my taste.
Overall, is an excelent job. Keep it up, Autor...
