- Elijah KingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a solid read for fans of tabletop RPGs and fantasy adventures. The premise is pretty cool: a group of friends gets together for a D&D session, but they end up getting sucked into the game world for real. Kind of a twist on Jumanji in that sense which was fun for me. The main character, Doc, is a super stressed out lawyer.. He's relatable, at least to me haha. Dealing with the pressures of his job and the weird situation he’s been thrown into. His journey from being burned out to facing real-life dangers in a fantasy world is compelling.
The characters are distinct and feel realistic too, which makes their interactions fun to read. There’s a good mix of humor and tension, especially when the group realizes the stakes are life and death. The dynamic between Doc and his old flame, Amanda, adds another layer to the story as well! Some of the other characters, like Bea and Ghimli, are likable, but they could use a bit more development to make them stand out more.
The story’s writing is straightforward and easy to follow, which keeps the pace moving. There are some parts where the descriptions get a bit long, but it doesn’t drag too much. The action scenes are clear, and the way the game mechanics are integrated into the story is well done, making it feel like a real RPG session.
There are a few minor grammar issues and some moments where the dialogue feels a bit off, but nothing too distracting. Overall, it’s a good start to what could be a fun series, especially for those who enjoy fantasy with a modern twist.
