- Battle_Sloth1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Listen, I didn't think I needed a deconstruction of Power Rangers, of all things. I'd never really watched a lot of tokukatsu, apart from some Power Rangers back in the 90's and early 2000's. But the promise of tokukatsu in book form? Piqued my interest. And readers: Percival Constantine delivers.
Our heroes aren't generic teenagers with attitude that Zordon recruited. They're characters with a lot of dramatic potential: The grieving new leader who finds leadership thrust upon him, after losing the man he loved, an MMA fighter who seeks the truth behind the incident that killed his family, the legacy Omega Knight who everyone thought was destined to lead, a healer thrust into a warrior's role, and an agile action junkie, and that's just the Omega Knights themselves. The villains are mysterious and compelling in a way that Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa never really were, and the support team and the Heads are believable, even when they do things that make you want to smack them upside the head. Seriously, Marcus Kane, I understand the moves you have to make, but I also would've thrown hands.
The stakes are high from the jump: We begin with an almost total squad wipe, and it doesn't let up from there.
The prose is solid and functional, exactly what this story needs.
Overall, I'm excited for more and I solidly reccomend this novel. - LunaMoth19Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a quick and fun read that aims to deconstruct Tokusatsu shows, and ask how they could be made a bit more realistic. I like it because despite being a deconstruction it works with the genre not against it, there are still giant monsters and a giant robot piloted by color coded superhero’s.
