Magic schools, well written characters, sprawlingly large world and magic systems, likeable characters, deliberately unlikeable characters without being caricatures, inhuman characters, wit, charm, and quality.
Of Wizards and Ravens is a combination between the favorite stories I read as a teenager and the improvements in stories over the years since then.
Assuming the rest of the story is as good as it has been so far, if there is ever a Kickstarter to get this printed I would happily make room in my budget to get a physical copy.
Pacing is good, twists are clever, I haven't felt anything unreasonable has happened considering the world as it is presented. So if you like magic schools, found family/friends, and stories more fleshed out than adventure romps (I do enjoy them as well, not dissing them), I strongly encourage you to give this story a chance

This book is, quite frankly, amazing. The characters are all fleshed out to an impressive degree, the magic system is consistent, logical, and fun, and it does an academy the way everyone wishes academy stories could be done.
Anyways, did you hear about that 50 word limit for reviews? I can understand it, but still.

I'll be honest, when I first saw this one, I noticed "Dragon" and almost dismissed it as that trope is very overplayed. But the author has done a great job breathing fresh life into that and a bunch of other tropes by giving them a tweaks and flipping them on their head.  Same for "Magic Academy"  - tired of HP repeats or cutthroat anime style schools?  You are in luck.  Here we have something closer to an actual university setting, with competent staff and faculty, but with wonderful fantasy thrown in, but not quite Brakebills or Scholomance dark.
The magic system (s)! are very interesting.  Author has mixed in lots of interesting paths to power - Bloodlines, Holy, Arcane, Cultivation and more. All seem pretty balanced and lots of room to mix and match and theory craft in your imagination.
World building and setting - the world feels "lived in"  the story takes place in a 3rd or 4th age, with lots of remnants around to give it a feeling of both wonderful and history.  World feels like a rationale exploration of what the power system might produce like a John Bierce novel, mixed with the slightest gentle touches of Pratchett whimsy.
LGBTQ -  Author address it with a light touch. There is representation, but the author has expressed an active disinterest in sexual content so I expect we never see anything beyond sweet chaste affection.  It's all very positive, but even if that is not your cup of tea, I don't think what we have seen so far could turn off even the most delicate sensitivities - don't let that block you from a great story.
'Book 1" is complete and it was an excellent story with good pacing balanced levels of action / progression/school life.
Currently one of the stories i eagerly watch for updates.

Of Wizards and Ravens is really a wonderful fable that is everything a magical academy should be. Imagine progression fantasy Hogwarts with a much better, soft magic system. I truly recommend that you read this if you like magic stories like Mother of Learning. It is really excellent.
I really enjoy the style with which Charm & Fable writes in, a first person narrative style. The grammar is just as good as one could want. The story has a lot of potential and I cannot wait to see where it goes. Naturally, 'Emrys'' character is very well crafted, with a lot left to explore, I feel. The side characters also have a lot of depth, but also enought room to grow, like Jackson, who is a atypical 'sorcerer-paladin' who is good for once, yet a bit obsessive. I think as we read on, his faith and absolute goodness/positivity will be challenged a bit by Emrys and others, which will make for some good growth. What really makes 'Of Ravens and Wizards' great, though, is just how much thought and effort Charm & Fable has put into world building, especially its magic systems. They really mesh well. It is open ended enough that it feels like anything is possible, but has reasonable, soft limitations which means that 'Emrys' is going to treat magic systems like Pokémon and explore none of them to any true depth. I am really looking forward to seeing where 'Of Ravens and Wizards' goes, and I heartily recommend you start reading now, if you haven't already!

You know all of those people who say they made an account to give one specific work a review? Well, I'm finally doing it.
Emrys is a compelling main character, largely because of his backstory. I don't want to give spoilers, but he is someone who has made and continues to make extraordinary sacrifices for what he believes is right.
Emrys's narrative has themes of family conflict that will probably appeal to many readers who are queer or have struggled with their own family or culture. And he exists within a truly unique world which gives context and motivation to his actions.
I think everything else in this story is secondary to the main character, which unfortunately shows somewhat in the quality of these aspects.
The biggest problem the story has is the pacing; it needs something to encourage you to keep reading, something to keep you hooked from one chapter to the next. I'm not talking about cliffhangers, but a sense of constant forward motion and suspense, which is important even for slice of life novels.
I also want to call attention to the characterization, which is almost but not quite perfect; many characters have distinct and memorable personalities, but many do not, and I cannot fully understand the values of even the main character, despite a backstory that should have given him a unique perspective.
The bottom line is that this story is unique, even within its genre, and is worth reading even if you have been around on Royal Road for a long time. I hope it continues, because I want to see the next part of Emrys's journey.

Really interesting system with a lot of options and lots of room for growth. The world building is fleshed out with details added fairly naturally. There are lots of interesting mysteries and places to explore. Characters feel real and have their own motivations. Writing style is great! Really reads well. Great story, I’m gonna favourite

Promising magical academy story. The writing is great, protagonist starts with a decent base for magical learning. The setting reminds me of a mix of dnd with king killer chronicles. Minus the flowery prose and pacing issues of name of the winds of course. If you're someone that looked at the wizards spell list and agonized over which one to pick this might be the tale for you

All caught up now, what a shame! I really enjoyed this novel. This scratched the perfect itch. It was a delightful magic school novel, with a lot of focus on classes, learning, growing in power, and friendship.
It obviously has a few nods to Mark of the Fool, and is based on a deep love of the magic school genre.

This has been one of my favorite books on this site. I just finished the first book and I love it; the world the author created is full of magic and potential, and each chapter I read fills me with so much curiosity that I wish I could attend one of the magic schools.I'm especially excited to learn about the other sources of power; the first book gave us some glimpses of them, but I want to know more about their mechanics, especially songcalling and destinies. The glimpses of Hydref and Shen-Long that the epilogue gave us thrilled me, and I also want to know more about the Erudites. Henry ended up being one of my favorite characters, so I want to see what his peers are capable of.

If you are a fan of complicated but rich magic systems, this is perfect for you. I love just getting into a magic system and following along with the mc in discovering it's aspects.
Characters seem interesting and unique so far and the mc is likeable.
I'm already dreading the day I catch up and have to wait days for a new chapter.
