Ode to Fallen Angels

Description
Jericho, the land of humanity, writhes in pain. Magic has been forbidden for centuries in this so-called "Age of Silence." Arcane knowledge has been presumed lost and irrecoverable, and the echoes of God's Will grow fainter with each passing year. Many have succumbed to despair, others are driven mad by their fruitless efforts to bring back a Golden Age only written in books and fairy tales.
Demi-human caravans have grown scarce. Orcs, elves, and others still have learned to no longer beg for help from those who despise them. They can expect more from the voracious wild lands than from humankind.
In the midst of this upheaval, young Gabrielle lives in complete ignorance. An orphan living under the mercy of the Church of the Saints, she bears the mark of evil in her red hair; the telltale sign of a Witch.
In an Age of the Silent, the Prejudiced, and the Hateful, Gabrielle clings to a simple hope: that one day, be it in life or death, she may find herself forgiven of her sin.
The sin of being born.

- ThorgalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of the most gripping openings I have read on this site. A story with quality waiting to get published!
From the innocence of the main character to the mystery of her surroundings, everything is balanced perfectly. In some ways, this reminds me of the (beginning) of the Promised Neverland where you are waiting for the story to give you more clues.
Style: The prose is filled with character, almost as if you are actually in the head of the MC. Descriptions of bizarre events are told with such innocence that you just can't help but care about what is going to happen to the MC.
Story: As I mentioned before, it reminds me of the beginning of the Promised Neverland, where you know something is wrong but are waiting on clues to figure out what exactly it is. A gripping mystery and pure innocence are intertwined in a world where something is definitely wrong.
Grammar: At the level of a published book, grammar and prose are more than excellent.
Character: From the first chapter the story makes you care about Gabi. From the innocent descriptions of her experience to the struggle she is going through. The purity of her character makes you hope nothing bad will happen to her.
Overall: As I mentioned before, this story is one of the most gripping ones I have read on RR. I suggest everybody try out 1 chapter at the very least!
To the author, I hope you publish this story in the future! It has a professional quality to it and I wish you best of luck! - Ellen TaylorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was a great read!
The style was great. I honestly had no issues with it. It did mind hop around a bit, but I was never confused by what POV I was in, nor was I confused as to what was going on. It was clear, and the descriptions were lovely. It helped build an interesting and facinating world.
I never know what to say with grammar. Nothing stuck out to me, and I was never pulled out of the story by weird spelling or wrong punctuation. It was great.
The story was magnificent. I loved the idea of fantasy and magic starting to die out. There seemed to be a rich world right out of reach of our MC, which already starts the tension and the beautiful build up. And gives such an empathetic pull with Gabi.
Speaking of Gabi, the characters were wonderful. As I said before, Gabi had my sympathy right from the get go. It was absolutely incredible (in a sad way) to see what she was going through, and to have it filtered through her POV to see the kind of abuse she suffered and the way she lives through it and makes excuses. It is believable in the saddest way.
Overall, it is a wonderful read. I enjoyed the change of pace of a low fantasy story. Like I said before, the dying out of magic with the hint of it coming back is a favorite of mine, and I quite enjoyed what I've read of this story. - Jack0fheartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0We'll start with my one and only critique, the chapter naming. It's hard to know your progress reading and I highly expect it to be the key reason for the unbelievable small follower count. The story is too well written for it to be caused by anything else, readers tend to avoid any new story less than 'chapter 10' in latest updates.
I'm highly impressed with this one. Ode to Fallen Angels takes tragedy to new levels. Gabriella manages to maintain a praiseworthy amount of innocence in a environment devoid of anything remotely resembling the love and kindness one would expect for a child.
Style Score 5/5: This story is beautifully written, successfully conveying the gravity of Gabi's plight. This is very truly grimdark in every sense of the word.
Story score 5/5: Following my previous point, the story is very good at teasing out details and worldbuilding with amazing imagery.
Grammar score 5/5: The least important rating, Ode to Fallen Angels grammar far surpases what I'd expect for a story to be considered legible. I highly enjoyed reading it with no glaring obvious mistakes taking away my immersion.
Character score 5/5: The characters are top-notch! Gabi is surprisingly innocent regardless of the treatment she receives. The few other characters introduced at this point of the story all have very distinct personalities and promise to be great additions to the story.
To sum it up, Ode to Fallen Angels is a beautiful tragedy in the grimdark setting. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy following an optimistic MC plunged into a world filled with darkness and misery! ♥ - PeregrinateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What makes Royal Road special, is how you some times come across these little gems in between a lot of very good attempts. Gems that have it all; an interesting plot, characters that you care for, and grammar and language in the hands of someone who can wield them. Ode is one of the gems.
Style
Good flow is perhaps the first thing that comes to mind. Effortlessly, the author moves between dialogue, inner monologue and descriptions. Each is in turn well crafted, and serves to build emotion in the reader. It is not just a soulless description of events, it's a story that we are invited to join.
I found the use of shifting viewpoints particularly well done, and suited to the style of story being told.
Grammar
This is an author who has read - a lot. The grammar and language is heads above most contributions on RR. Little to no spelling mistakes, but more than that, the author wields language very well. In some paragraphs, it gets the feel of a published, edited story (that is to say: professional quality)
Story
Interesting and engaging! The author manages to take their time to build a world and a setting, in a way that the reader might consider too slow if it wasn't for how the plot is woven into the imagery in a way that pulls us into the story, and into the next chapter.
The author is building a setting for the long haul, brick by brick. It will be very interesting to see where this leads!
Character(s)
Gabi... It is very difficult to read about her. The juxtaposition of the darkness surrounding the MC, and the brightness she brings into the world and those she interacts with, is both heartwarming and heartrendering. I will be very angry with the author if Gabi doesn't get her comeuppance :) - CKJ5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story 5/5: Ode to Fallen Angels is an amazing tale that follows Gabrielle, a disgraced girl in the church. There seems to be much more behind the scenes at the church. There is so much mystery and intrigue to the story it is hard to put down once you start it.
Style 5/5: The writing style is detailed and works very well for the setting. The thing the author does superbly is the pacing. Each chapter gives us a little clearer picture of what is happening. From what I have read, nothing feels wasted. Every chapter feels to have weight and meaning.
Grammar 5/5: Everything looked spot on to me. Once I started enjoying the story, I put looking for mistakes out of my mind and just enjoyed the ride.
Character 5/5: The MC, Gabrielle or Gabi, is a great character. Once you get inside her head, you can feel her inexperience with the real world, making her blind faith realistic. The supporting cast is well-written, have distinct voices, and is not just set pieces.
Overall 5/5: Ode to Fallen Angels is a brilliant read. I appreciated everything in this story, from the concept (I am a sucker for a good church/religion story), the pacing, and the characters. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a meaty story. - HWPerfidyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: The story follows Gabi, a girl shunned for being a witch at the Church. Some dark and sinister things are happening at this Church, and the mystery is unveiled bit by bit with every chapter. I haven’t read this type of story in quite a long while, making it a refreshing change of pace.
The worldbuilding is pretty good, giving us little hints now and then as to what happened and what the world is like, but never so much that it bogs the prose down.
Style: The style flows well and is comfortable to read. All the descriptions make it easy to picture what’s happening. The POV switches get a bit fast and frequent in the Thief chapter, but doesn’t make it confusing. Gabi’s POV tends to go off on tangents, but I assume that’s because of her personality rather than the author.
Character: Gabi is a bit dense, but in the endearing way. Reading from her point of view was a joy. Though the way she meanders in her thoughts gets a bit old at times, though that’s a characteristic of her personality that I appreciate.
The other characters are similarly interesting to read about. Their personalities are present throughout the prose and their dialogue, making it easy to tell who’s who.
Grammar: A few mistakes but nothing that affects the flow of the story
Overall: I loved it. My only suggestion is that the chapter titles are all labelled “prologue of [something]”, which may cause misunderstandings, since from what I know, RR readers get turned off by prologues. - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wow! This story is something else entirely! One of the most professional and engaging stories I've found on Royal Road. The full picture of the story is not immediately evident at the outset, being fed in penny packets of information and contextual world building to maintain the building tension and mystery, while providing an absolute tragedy of a character to follow through her harsh existence. Not for the faint of heart! But definitely worth the read.
Style - excellent. The prose is almost poetic at times, with vivid, surreal physical descriptions when needed and a subtle but clear authorial voice the rest of the time that perfectly complements the dark tone of the story. You feel for Gabi in a visceral way that is uncommon for rr.
Story - full marks. I see the story as being in two parts, the first getting to know and understand Gabi's plight, the second the growing mystery behind the state of the world and the role Gabi and the chapel play in it. Its engaging from the first paragraph and I couldn't bring myself to stop reading.
Grammar - excellent quality, a very small number of very minor issues but nothing to detract from reading the story at all.
Character - oh Gabi. Poor, poor Gabi. I won't lie, at times this was difficult to read because of what Gabi has had to go through, and her naive acceptance of abuse and her lot in life. An absolute master-class in character, even if I wish Dog had maybe given me a little bit more to be happy about when reading! The supporting cast all feel like they fulfill a critical function in the story, but beyond that they feel complex and real rather than being vehicles for exposition, no matter how short their time on screen.
Favourited and followed and I recommend everyone does the same. - Evelyn AdelbergRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is interesting in many aspects, the first of which being how it combines together deep religious themes with a classical fantasy setting.
To those who have read the Bible, or who simply know a thing or two about Christianity, there are many things of interest other than the names of certain characters, or overall religious imagery. Having this knowledge can help go into this story while being "at the same level" as the MC in terms of lore knowledge.
There are also many hints to the sorry state of the world outside of the small church our MC lives in. While reading this, I felt like the author left many tiny clues, which much like the hundreds of bits of glass that make up a stained glass window, made up this story.
Speaking of which, the story is very straightforward. It's a tale as old as time about an outcast having (or choosing to in this case) to rise above the expectations and limitations of the world around her to achieve greatness.
However, I found this story to be somewhat slow-paced, with details details about the world and its events sprinkled perhaps just a tad too far apart to keep me invested.
The MC did a good job of keeping me in the story for a good chunk of it, but her characterisation did make me want to put down the story at several points. If I were to pinpoint it to a single factor, my issue with the MC is that she's very young, or at least acts as such. I understand her circumstances, and how they could have led her to become this way (and I even suspect her almost infantile behaiour is intentionally written that way, perhaps as a symptom of autism or DID).
However, it makes it hard to stay invested in the story, as I don't understand some of her actions, especially those in relation to her powers, or status as a witch, and can't relate to most of the rest due to the abovementioned childness.
Nevertheless, the other focal characters more than make up for it, with their unique outlooks on life, and more relatable personalities.
Last, - TealiciousTeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Different, worth a shot for yourself to see what is inside.
On one hand, we face the funny events of child and elf and on the other we have hints of darker world. It is an interesting piece. Well written and engaging. Style and grammar are good. Perhaps for some it may be a bit too descriptive but that is personal preference and it worked for me. The characters are compelling and complex. Overall, a job well done. - Jude McCabeRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I love the story so far but the worst part about it is the over explanation. As an example...
"It would be a long while before they could truly sleep deep and heavy, even when this had to be the first time they actually rested in so long. But it wasn’t the motion that bothered them, or even the voice of Gabrielle… no, it was that strange name.
“Hmmm, are you talking to me?” Said Bari, who was fully aware this was meant for them and yet tried their best to deflect it.
you could reasonably cut this down to
. It would be a long while before they could truly sleep deep and heavy, but it wasn’t the motion that bothered them, no, it was that strange name.
“Hmmm, are you talking to me?” Said Bari.
you just need enough to get a point across any extra that you try to use to make absolute sure someone gets the ppoint just makes it so hard to read. Probably about a quarter of most paragraphs just aren't necessary and need to be cut.
