Description

In the wild places of our planet, dark vestiges of our paranormal past yet cling to twisted life. In the past, the hunters and trappers of the world were tasked with removing such blights from society's fringes - legal assassins, enlisted to enforce the will of civilization against those unnatural, otherworldly hosts. Nowadays, we're not so lucky. With the idea of proper monster-hunting fading from public perception, the once-prestigious mantle is donned by amateurs, hobbyists, and self-taught warriors. It pays poorly, it's dangerous, and people would rather do something that gets them rich or famous or drowning in attention. Most often, new-age monster hunters are born from tragedy. They lack the tact, training, and funding of hunters passed. Instead, they have only their wits and brawn to carry them through.

So it is with our hero.

In the woods of the American Midwest, foul creatures lurk. Tabitha Varna, a young college drop-out scarred by her past, is determined to uproot them or die trying. Sometimes she hopes for both.

*Ahh… Trying to be a no spoiler review…*
Northwoods Trapper is a fresh tale from MarcieTheVillain that follows the path of Tabitha Varna, a monster hunter with a partial death-wish and her battles against the denizens that walk the shadows of our world. And this one starts with a bang, two-stroke exhaust, and the sweet sounds of a repurposed tree felling machine. Vivid, gritty and at times outright messy, this tale is energetic, dark, and not for the faint of heart.
    Style:
Northwoods Trapper oozes with Marcie’s signature style. Tight and gritty descriptions built with metaphors, slick play on words and dark humour abound in the best of ways. One moment you are reading a dark description, the next you’re giving a chuckle at her unique use of similes and graphic descriptions to fill a scene, while keeping the action fast paced and visceral. That first chapter is ridiculously good in dragging the reader kicking and screaming into the world she has created.
    Story:
This story is moving a great pace, and Marcie is demonstrating her acumen for controlling the scenes and pacing, feeding the reader with measured amounts of world and character building with her generous charismatic flair. It is a story that unfolds chapter-by-chapter, fleshing out the world the main character calls home in an organic fashion that makes you want for more.
    Characters:
As I was reading Chapter 4, it really hit me how even the support characters are so well rounded and how they interact with Tabitha. There is a real sense of history and shared understanding among them that hints at the quality of story to come. And the heroine herself; Tabitha is a rough and tough one but not without her fragility and own hinted personal demons from the past. Who these people are is a big draw point that keeps me coming back for more.
    Grammar:
Grammar is well-sorted, nothing immediately sticks out or caused any concerns for readability. Considering the energetic style of the writing, grammar is tight and clean.
