New Paris [a Modern-day LitRPG]

Description
New Paris[OR]I reincarnated into the world of my favorite wuxia novel as an S ranker with unbalanced skills.
[Volume 1]
I was one of those people who only stood out in a crowd when their name was called. Then, I died. But instead of heaven, hell, or anything else, I found myself in the body of a young woman whom I did not recognize at first.
You see, I had this novel I was obsessed with. The novel was a fairly popular wuxia that got a few sequels, and a handful of spinoffs. One of these spinoffs took place in Paris, where the main cast fought against a multi-millionaire villain. He had half a dozen kids, give or take, with me ranking somewhere in the middle.
You'd think with magic skills - high-ranking at that - and money, I'd have everything I'd ever wanted and could live a fun and relaxed life as long as I stayed under the radar of the unstable cast of the novel? But no, between monster attacks, cultists, and global conspiracies I quickly found myself in need of an ally. But who would be naive enough to help out a stranger, all while having enough knowledge about the world? A child raised by the abovementioned conspirators, perhaps?
[Volume 2]-Currently Airing
It had not been a good idea to interfere with the characters of the original novel. Had I known it was going to cause a butterfly effect, I would have stayed in my lane and minded my business. Although, between the suspicious attacks I seem to constantly find myself in the center of, and my 'family' who is the living definition of the expression 'rich pricks', I’m not entirely sure my current predicament would have been avoidable.
But maybe it isn't to be avoided; maybe I should embrace this opportunity that has been given to me and become the hero of this story? At least it's certain that I can't do worse than the original protagonist in terms of moral ambiguity; with immortality already in my pocket, and no other useful skills to account for. However, if I were to follow this path, I would have a lot to lose, including an upcoming promotion and my growing relationship with my crush.
With power, glory and whatever else on one side, and my wellbeing and happiness on the other, even in this magical wuxia world, the choice is easy to make.

- AnehaliaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a litrpg and an isekai. Expect blue boxes and details about the story the MC has been transported into.
This story is an interesting addition to the litrpg as it is set in a alternate reality's modern city of Paris (where Notre Dame seemingly hasn't burned). The story is fairly enjoyable with a distinct character voice narrating it. I liked the world, but felt that sometimes the author dumped a little too much about the previous story at once. I did like the time the author used an "excert" from story we've entered to show us the character's knowledge about the story.
The story the character does seem to be very important to the plot of this book, and I do like seeing the author make use of the orginal story in the way they do (to say more would be spoilers)
Style: Lots of character voice to this narration. I enjoyed that.
Story: Not quite sure where this story is going, but I am enjoying the slice of life with other elements that this story represents. It seems fun so far and worth reading.
Grammar: Some typos (not too bad on this number) and lots of commas. I realized I had to stop caring about commas and just read past them. This is a writeathon participant, so that is expected of a story in a writeathon. Overall though it is very good for the amount of content the author is producing to write enough for the writeathon.
Character: Fun characters. I look forward to reading more. - SR FauthRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like this fiction so far. It's solid. Character development is decent, story development is decent, and the whole super heroes "were all super so no one is" mentality reminds me a lot of how the Incredibles Universe was before the movies started.
Notba lot of work stuff here. Don't know what the other reviewers are saying, but I gotta disagree. All I see is a unique twist on LITRPG elements in a world where might makes right with a Monte Blanc political twist.
Solid read. I am looking forward to where it goes. - Anthony and Leisel VolskiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A well rounded slice of life LitRPG that demands your attention, New Paris is a refreshing concept that puts you not in a classic fantasy setting, but smack dab in the middle of modern day Paris (and a few other locations, but spoilers!).
Style: I always struggle with this one. The story was very easy to digest, with medium-short chapters and very reasonable paragraphs. My main gripe, and it's a small one, would be more consistency with the tables. Initially the + and - factors were a little finicky on my eyes, but I got used to it over time.
Story: I'm not gonna lie, all I know about Paris is that it has the Eiffel Tower, a big river, and (I think?) a bunch of bridges. Beyond that, I got nothin'. I found myself visualizing the Wild Lands like the tall grasses in a Pokemon game. I would kill for more descriptive detail to really put me there. That aside, getting reincarnated into an ancillary character from a novel who's just trying NOT to die, ah...
This... this does not work. But when you get to come back after dying, does it matter all that much?
Suffice it to say, it's a fascinating concept. While most of the story feels expositional, it's a good start to a series that I'm happy to get into. Worldbuilding is so, so important.
Grammar: Spelling and grammar are above average, especially considering the author is up front about their dyslexia. Most sins were forgivable, but there were a couple times I had to reread something to better understand what was going on.
Character: Probably the most outstanding aspect of New Paris is its offbeat, quirky, and fleshed (and furred) out characters. Laura is super relatable, her love interest is cute and thoughtful, and the characters she encounters from the book are anything but one-dimensional. Does the author have a little brother? Because she has 'sulky teenage boy' down to a science.
Overall, New Paris shows real promise and I'm interested to see how the issues that arise from the first book affect the second. You know wh - CKJ5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story 5/5: New Paris is a portal LitRPG set in an alternative version of Paris, hence the title. It starts as a slice-of-life story in a world where monster attacks are not uncommon, and we follow Laura trying to do what we all are trying to do, survive our day-to-day lives while hoping for some happiness. Laura also carries a secret with her. Somehow when she was transported into this world, she became the third daughter of an infamous villain.
Style 5/5: I am very new to the LitRPG genre, and it still doesn't fully click with me. I could do without stat sheets, but the stat sheets in New Paris are well put together, clean, and easy to understand. They also seem very important to the story because Laura is still learning about the world. The story is told from a first-person narrative, and you get a personal bond with the character.
Grammar 5/5: I do not think I found any typos or mistakes. New Paris is one of the most grammatically sound books I have read on Royal Road thus far.
Character 5/5: Laura is a likable MC, and it is easy to relate to her. I have not seen much of the other cast yet. But her crush that she works with adds flavor to the story and Laura's character. Also, it was hinted that he might not be what he seems.
Overall 5/5: New Paris is a fun, smooth read. I was impressed by how solid the writing was, and I am glad to have read it. - _GlassesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0[Review Swap Disclosure]
New Paris has a nice a vibe that really does feel like a Modern LitRPG. From the day to day to work strikes, it really does feel like the real world intermingled with the Ranks and Classes that we've come to appreciate from the LitRPG genre.
Laura is an interesting character that we slowly get to learn more and more about, giving us better insight into her relationships with others, like her crush, and how she goes about it. The writer handles her well and the dialogue between her and others flow well and doesn't have any clunkiness to it that makes it feel artificial.
With an interesting cast with its own little mysteries beyond Laura, I think New Paris is a nice read for lovers of the genre.
Additionally, Luck is used as HP in this LitRPG, which I believe is an interesting interpretation of some theories in other Tabletop RPG communities that HP is less about taking a thousand arrows and more about managing to not get hit by a fatal, vital strike until you hit 0, I.E. you're plum out of luck. - ErdosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book's strength is its character. This is a semi-self-aware, modern-speech-laden story of a woman with real problems. Like stress at work, the world just generally being a little much – and monster attacks. A mouth as well as a steady-as-she-goes attitude all that keep her believing in a head above water. Well, those and a helping of denial. Healthy stuff.
Stylistically the text is sound, language and general openness doing a great job selling the moment.
An issue I found with it: Every time the portal-fantasy aspect came up in the first three chapters it was forced, the two ideas - system and happenings - separated within the text. The story will move along naturally and *bam* exposition.
The storytelling so far has been somewhat wonky as well. I'm not talking about the main storyline here but the construction of plot in general. We've been introduced to things in a backwards manner, extrapolating from that there may be more issues ahead.
My first impression overall is of a book radiating character through a consistent style – a pleasure to read.
As far as blurbs go, this one is super standard. That's fine. It reassures the reader that they are about to embark on a familiar journey.
It does not, however, do a very good job of setting up the first chapters. In the first chapter, her death is not mentioned and neither is her living-situation that of a millionaire's daughter. The world is seemingly normal. She even has a passive skill that will let her reincarnate.
I read all that as her not having died, yet. Maybe, all that was an intentional ploy by the author, I, however, do not believe this to be a good kind of confusion. - FieryGalladeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a reasonably expansive story about a person who got reincarnated into the body of a female, living in the world of a LitRPG novel. The setting is an alternative version of the real world, with a few major differences. Most of the action takes place in an alternative version of Paris, complete with questionably competent police forces, horrible fish monsters, and large birds.
Grammar-The weakest point of the story has to be the grammar-however, it's worth noting, that the author has improved in this regard, as the story went forward. Grammar mistakes are still present, but they aren't as common as they used to be. Furthermore, the mistakes that are present, aren't particularly sizable, and shouldn't prove to be too much of a hindrance while reading the work.
Style-The story is mostly presented in a digestible, appropriate manner. There are, however, certain points in the story, where the author gets a bit too descriptive, which, unfortunately, results in long paragraphs of exposition dumps. Those particular instances could disrupt the reading experience.
Story-The story follows our reincarnated protagonist, who struggles with both the more grandiose obstacles, as well as the various hardships of daily life. She has to adapt to her new life in this new world, where monster attacks in large cities aren't particularly uncommon, and the social hierarchy is determined by the "skills" a certain person possesses. In that regard, Laura, our main character, is in a rather unique situation. While she is an S-ranker, who would normally be pretty well-off in this setting, she is forced to hide her rank, as most of her skills are incredibly esoteric, and not well-suited to traditional combat. She also comes from a rich background, which has painted a target on her back, attracting the people who'd like nothing more than to get rid of her father and his family. All of that, coupled with her reincarnation, led to her becoming a rather secretive person...and, wow, look at th - Freya StoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a brilliantly executed slice of life in a LitRPG setting. It’s rare that reincarnation doesn’t immediately result in an overpowered MC. And this book is a refreshing take on how it can be mundane for some who are just trying to continue on living without the “right” skills.
Style: 5/5 - The style is written in 1st person perspective - past tense. It’s really well thought out and reads very well. The inner thoughts help explain the lore of the story, as well as the intriguing setting! The LitRPG elements are in tables and flow well within the book. If I had one tiny gripe it’s that the chapters are short and I want more. That’s not really a gripe though considering I have so much to binge at the moment!
Story: 4.5/5 - I truly enjoy the story that’s been created here. It’s simple in that it follows the MC who’s been reincarnated to this world with stats, levels and classes. But it’s much more complex than that. You’re slowly given more information about the MC and the world she’s now living in and it makes for and intriguing and thought provoking read. It starts 3 months into her life in a new world so she's a bit more settled and used to the world, which is a great place to start. It’s also brilliant to see how people would judge/look down on others based on their class/ranks. Very well thought out.
If I could add one thing, it'd be more descriptions of the places the MC sees. I'd love to see more of the world through her eyes.
Grammar: 4.5/5 - I noticed some minor errors, but they were few and far between. The author obviously takes great care to edit and changes things based on comments too. Very well written.
Character: 5/5 - This is may favorite part of the book! Laura is a well thought out character. Her inner thoughts are hysterical and snarky. She gets side-tracked and goes off on tangents. It’s truly a joy to read. There’s both humor and real emotions mixed perfectly well. Etienne (the MC’s crush) is a wonderfully mysterious and kind boy as well. It’s - HWPerfidyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: I was initially confused about when and what was going on (eg whether the mc was in her past life in the first few chapters, or had already been isekaied). However, as I read on, things cleared up and I began to really enjoy the story. It’s a more slice of life approach than I’m used to, and the bits about the book were a bit confusing at first, but it offers a lot of intrigue about the world and what's going on.
I have a bit of a quip about the blue boxes, in the way that there seems to be too many skills for me to keep track of at a time. I end up reading the skill descriptions and then forgetting that the mc had that skill, though that might be more of a me problem.
Style: Style is charming. The use of the main character’s voice adds a lot of flavour to the narrative.
Character: The characters in this story are very vibrant and interesting. Nearly all the characters are incredibly memorable due to their personalities or how the mc described them, in the way that there was not a single moment where I had to do a double take and wonder who on earth a particular character was. Again main character's voice is present throughout the narrative, allowing for vivid characterisation of the main character just from the narrative itself, which is something I really appreciate from stories.
Grammar: There were very few grammar mistakes that I could see. - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a bit of a new experience for me. Since coming to rr I've seen my fair share of isekai stories, but not a slice of life vibed one set in a modern Paris with an MC who has some powerful skills that do very little in terms of provide useful combat abilities (at the stage of writing this review). All in all, this was unique! To say the least.
Style - I absolutely loved the style. The use of the MC's voice in the narration was an excellent choice, her personality and snark infusing the entire story and really setting a fantastic tone. The prose is easy to read and get lost in, you'll be swept up in the story from the get go.
Story - I can tell it's getting to some bigger plot beats. It's taking a little time to get there, but to be honest that's a-ok. The slice of life vibes (warning! Very minor early spoiler: when slice of life involves getting murdered by an angry plant at your barista job) are charming, and slowly uncovering what has happened to the MC and how she got here is an enjoyable experience as we see her attempting to navigate more mundane concerns like getting to her minimum wage job on time and impressing her cute co-worker. No matter what was on the page, it all felt engaging and fun to read.
Grammar - no real issues observed.
Character - absolutely fantastic! The way the characters are built to be so vibrant and clear in your mind's eye in such a short amount of time is a testament to the writer's skill, and the MC in particular could carry this story alone on the merits of her snark and struggles.
All in all, this is the first time I would describe a story with screaming murder plants as 'cosy' but here we are. Followed and favourited!
