Description
Over three-hundred years ago, the necromancer, Emperor Keir, almost took over the entire continent ofErebu. It took a coalition of nations from all over the world to defeat him and his army of mindless undead and loyal living subjects. But that was not the end of him, he created a 'Heart' to safely hold his soul, which would allow him to return to life later.
In the present day, an army of demons have slaughtered their way across the continent. Most of the human inhabitants are dead, a few million survive in strongholds waiting for a miracle, and the rest of the world has abandoned the continent. In desperation the Eldritch Council, which was formed to prevent the spread of necromancy and ensure Keir would never be released, has resurrected the one time Emperor.
Now Keir has to use his powers to save the continent from an endless tide of demons, while dealing with allies who don't trust him, and under the effect of several geas that limit his actions and plans.
At least these problems put being resurrected as a woman into perspective.

- BentRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The world of story has been invaded by hordes of demons. They can be killed but there are so many of them that they overrun everything. In desperation, a mage among the last survivors resurrects the legendary necromancer Keir who centuries earlier had nearly conquered the continent. One twist is that he now has a young woman's body.
The focus of the story is the battle against the demons and the relationship between the necromancer and the humans in the demon war. The tension between them is masterfully described. Is he (or she as they see him) their savior or yet another threat to humanity? Keir remains ambitious and wants to regain his former position as emperor. In addition to his unique abilities as a necromancer, he also uses his leadership and motivational skills both in the war against the demons and to position himself.
Characters (5/5): the characterisation is one of the story's great strengths. The story is told in such a way that you understand and can empathise with the main characters.
Style (5/5): The story is told in third person with paragraphs each told from a particular person's point of view. The shifts work well. The narrative is lively and flowing with mostly fairly short paragraphs. It seems like good craftsmanship to me.
Grammar (5/5): There have been a few minor errors in spelling and grammar but nothing that particularly interferes with the reading. They are corrected regularly as readers point them out, so I won't let that drag down the rating.
Story (5/5): I don't have much experience with necromancy stories but have the impression that this story is unconventional with its focus on the character where it is not clear if the main character is to be perceived as good or evil. At the time of this review the story has reached chapter 9 and it is not yet possible to assess the overall plot of the story, but so far it has been a good and coherent story.
Overall (5/5): A special story whose quality will depend on whether the author manages to fi - LisferRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The short: The story is really interesting and the mc while quite op on an individual basis has to use all his might and cunning to stay relevant and alive.
The long(er)- Warning there might be a bit of a spoiler ahead (It is not intended and most likely something you would know after a few chapters)
Spoiler : This is one of those stories with an op necromancer steamrolling everyone and everything...right? Not quite. The main character Keir, Keira now because he got resurrected in a girl's body has a lot arrayed against him. He might be a necromantic genius and magically speaking, an absolute powerhouse, but his allies have him under a very restrictive geas, and it is doubtful they will not simply eliminate him when it is more convenient, the demons arrayed against him are legions upon legions. Like say, a large Hellgate into the abyss opened somewhere. And then there are new technologies invented after his untimely passing, which are possibly also something he might have to contend with. Pair that with a charismatic and smart protagonist who sees the living not simply as zombies in waiting and had a family before his fall, and you have quite an interesting recipe for a story. Very curious how it will go ,) - Sharp_Claw111Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0An incredibly well made story I particularly enjoy the occasional tasteful POV shift as well as the memories of when kier used to be emperor.
As you are reading you really get to see his character, motivations, values, and code of honor.
It is also insane how well written and different both of this authors stories are props to him. - SkaegerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0With legions of undead, demons for them to kill, and the desperation of a people on the brink of destruction, this was exactly what I was looking for when I got necromancers on the brain and started searching for a good story. The world building has a good bit of depth and the characters are well done and reasonably distinct. The world seems to be at a post-WW1 tech level which is a very interesting time period to blend with magic. I have not read enough fantasy stories in the industrial era.
The gender swap bit nearly made me pass over the story. It is not something that I usually enjoy reading. The very idea of being forced into the opposite gender body is disturbing for me, and I find that most stories that feature that aspect either dismiss it too easily or make it a central theme of the story, however I must say that it is very well written here and the author has covered the "discomfort" of the situation well so far without making it an overpowering focus of the story. It comes up fairly often, but is neither a source of constant trauma for the MC or something easily accepted. It is a good and well-written balance. I still can't say that I enjoy that specific part of the story, but as said above, I must admit it is very well done and the rest of the story is fantastic.
I look forward to reading more. - SolittlenamesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read this years ago, up to chapter 21 as it was releasing.
For whatever reason, it's deeply stuck with me, the world building is great, the story is fun and has a lot of cool ass shit in it.
It is super sad to see it's on hiatus(probably for good :( ). I would still give it a read, think about all the stories you've probably read that got abandoned anyway, or you just quit reading, this one is worth it, even as incomplete. - DWinchesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0...Probably still my enemy, just not for the first story arc. Necromancer Unmanned is the story of a fantasy world on the losing side of a war against demons. In fact, things are so grim that their only choice is to resurrect the greatest threat before this point in history.
First, I should say that I have a soft spot in my heart for necromancers, but I've never seen one done like this. The author has a great voice, but what really shines is his imagination. These first few chapters are the start of something great - you can already tell.
The only flaw in the story is its bi-monthly update schedule. I recommend the author increase that immediately. Aside from that though this is an excellent story that is quickly moving to the top of my reading list.
As a follower, I look forward to giving a longer advanced review after chapter 10. - Emerson FortierRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love me some necromancy. It's nice and dark and grim, just the way I like my fiction, particularly my necromancy. I thought it was going to go for the comedic during the first couple of chapters when the protagonist gets gender swapped by his resurrection, and honestly that part continues to annoy me a little. The dissonance between his thoughts of himself as the old emperor and his reality as a short little girl, while funny, make visualization hard, but the story so far is very good, with lots of different balls rolling. I expect this to become something quite exciting.
Style: Style is fine. The author dodges all the usual gaffs. (repetitiveness, poor english, etc). He head hops quite a bit, but it's not super distracting, and the protagonist remains the star of the show.
Grammar: Fine. A few errors here and there, but obviously english is a first language, and the author knows a bit about writing.
Story: Very good. Its very early yet, but the character is motivated, goal oriented, and caught in a situation rife with conflict. Survival will not be easy, and the relationships he have with the various factions will make obtaining some of his goals particularly troublesome. The Geas is a really nasty obstacle I look forward to seeing if or how he works his way past it.
Character: Excellent. The character is grimly pragmatic, driven, and powerful, yet that power has its weaknesses, in particular the Geas he is stuck with. His swap into a little girl's body is occasionally quite fun, when he's mad about being short. As long as it doesn't get... weird... I think it will remain a comedic element. As soon as romance starts to play a part in the story, I think I'm going to have a harder time, since he still thinks of himself as masculine, and that's how I see him as a consequence. How the author handles that dissonance will (probably) determine how long I stay with the story, but at present, and handled with as little screen time as it has been handled, I think it makes - gostsamoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is an early review and things might change in the future but so far so good.
The story has two main pillars it is build upon. The first one is an apocalyptic demonic invasion fought at late XIX century to early WWI level of weapons and technology plus the added bonus of rather involved magic. This is the part that delivers and could be rather fun if not messed up in the future.
The second pillar is the mc whose pronouns will be they/them/their for the purposes of this review. They are a Napoleon level of threat from the past who is resurrected to match the demonic invasion when any other means had proved ineffective. The twist of course is the gender-bender aspect where the mc is revived in a female body because of reasons. It can lead to different kinds of possible developments: the newest feminist on the continent; gender reconsidered with a romantic arc; dismorphia and fight to find a new body. All could work if well executed. The danger is that once crossed the checkbox for sensational mc situation the issue will be forgotten and the mc will be acting as if this does not matter. Many of the side characters are stereotypical enough and the story won't work if the same happens to the mc as well. The early stage of the story and the battle oriented arc at the moment mean that there is no rush but without it the story will be yet another necromant fighting around. - luda305Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Pretty decent story. The title doesn't really make sense and the synopsis is a bit skewed. But it's a basic dread emperor come back to form a new nation story. The sex change is mostly a background feature and not prominent. Some of the world building is a little inconsistent.
- InkEscapeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Okay, so when I read the concept for this story, I was prepared for it to be a bit cringy. Why? Lets be honest a man returning to life in a woman's body has the potential to be awkward to read. But this? Not at all. The author managed to make you laugh and humanize the main character at the same time. Keir is arrogant but charming. He knows he was powerful and wants his freedom. Will he ever get it? The story is written well and gets right down to it.
Also I enjoy the no small amount of pleasure the Blue mage takes in controlling Keir (Keira?). Right now we are only four chapters in but I highly encourage everyone to simply give this story a try.
An interesting fantasy world, a hoard of demons on the loose, a Blue mage who took a risk, and a once-dead necromancer doing nice things for selfish reasons.
The story has serious potential and I'm excited to see where it goes and the character development that occurs along the way. Will Keir turn into a chaotic good? Or will he return to his evil ways. 100% recommend for anime fans and those of dark fantasy in general.
