The author strikes a good balance between action and exposition, providing an intriguing premise with just enough detail to pull the reader into the action. As the reader, I’m left hungry for more information about the setting and the constructs – The Touched, the breadth of their powers, the event that merged realities across worlds – but the author does a great job of distracting from those questions with a steady diet of engaging battle scenes. The first 3 chapters could benefit from some review and refactoring to improve vocabulary choices and clarity. As with many of us, this improves as the chapters progress.
Noah is immediately likable as a main character, and his nonresponsive dialog with the other characters adds a touch of humor that nicely balances the action. His blend of self-deprecation and determination are endearing, and the author does a good job of pacing the reader through the development of his character and emerging skills.
Great imagination is obvious in the creative and descriptive articulation of various monsters right from the start, and I’m excited to see where Noah goes from here.
If you are drawn to progression fantasy-style stories, this one is for you! - ICEdingerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far, I have enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the story. If you are someone who wants to get down to business and not waste any time on frilly and useless pages of description, you should give this one a read! On to the detailed breakdown:
Style 5/5: The style of the story is very easy to follow and doesn't require any mental gymnastics to figure out complex philosophies or obscure mechanics. The short and sweet nature and smaller chapter size make it easy to devour a number of chapters in one sitting. Great if you want a quick action fix, but don't want to commit to chapters of filler before it gets good.
Story 4.5/5: Compelling story so far. Classis zero-to-hero plotline with some interesting twists and the setting is intriguing. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is due to the fact that the pacing is very quick, which is both a strength and a weakness.
Grammar 5/5: Not much to say about this one; the story is well proof-read and I did not notice any errors. If there are any, it definitely does not detract from the reading at all.
Character: 4.5/5: The cast so far are all very enjoyable, even if it is a little limited (Chapter 30). Jeffrey provides some comic relief and the skeletal minions have unique characteristics. Similar to my criticism of the story, the character development (in regards to the side characters) is a little shallow at the moment, but I am sure that will be addressed in future chapters.
Overall 4.75-5/5: Very enjoyable action read. Novel idea of a sci-fi post-apocalyptic necromancer. The MC's powers are interesting and don't feel samey or tropey. Excellent work so far! I blazed through the first 30 chapters in about an hour and was impressed by how quickly they flew by. - Kleo EriliRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Yes, the world of Necromancer Odyssey is a grim Science-Fantasy post-apocalypse – but the story nevertheless has a fine humour to make light of all that darkness, death and destruction. It's full of action, a desparate black humor and a dark atmosphere.
The main character Noah is a rather unremarkable and homely guy, definitely not the usual hero, who is downright forced into the adventure and uses humor to cope with his situation. Olivia Winter, who as of now wants to kill Noah for some reason is an antagonist that I could very well see becoming a nice ally in the future – who knows? The character definitely has potential. Steve is definitely a highlight of the story – even though the guy is pretty taciturn for understandable reasons, he made me laugh several times.
I like the style of the story, it reminds me of a mix of Joe Abercrombie, Planescape Torment (that flying skull!) with a touch Metro 2033 from Dimitry Glukhovsky.
Necromancer Odyssey has atmospheric worldbuilding, lots and lots of humor, an interesting power concept with the Touched and the bleak and dark atmosphere I like to see in the stories I read. If that's your thing as well then I can wholehartedly recommend you Necromancer Odyssey, go give it a read! - vorlefanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you enjoy a action-focused story, then this my friend, is for you!
For reference, it kinda reminds me of a mix of Xenoblade Chronicles and Monster Hunter. So to say, battle/action focused, in which is the cherry of the story, and survival elements.
Style: It's a nice balancing survival with cinematic action sequences. It shifts between claustrophobic survival horror (cave-dwelling insectoids, big monsters) and the need of finding basic resource in the wild. Dialogue is snappy, whether it’s Noah’s exasperated quips or Jeffrey the werehuman’s unhinged cackles. Albeit, for my own taste, I would prefer more introspective inner reflection about the character.
Grammar: Impeccable. The prose is polished, with crisp sentence structure and a fluid rhythm. Punctuation and tense remain consistent, even during chaotic battle scenes. A rare typo might slip through, but nothing to disrupt the immersion.
Character: Noah is a triumph: a relatable underdog whose panic attacks and guilt over past failures make his necromantic grit feel earned. Steve’s silent loyalty makes it fun to read, even more because of his body language dialogue, since, well... (read it, its worth xD)
Story: The world blends in dystopia of Arcturus City and the wild Hollowed Depths's nightmares (creatures, places and so on). The plot hurtles forward with relentless stake — actions followed by actions. The Touched power system (no spoiler here), is inventive, with rules that unfold naturally.
Perfect for readers craving action focused story.
~ Keep up the good world, fellow traveler :)
