- AlexanderScottRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Myth Hunter hints at an exciting and adventurous journey ahead—but we have to begin with poor Sethion, our dying hero and protagonist, who starts off the story in a truly sad state. He is genuinely sick and needs help (but can't get it from his own father, who has given up)—and he decides to steal something valuable from his family home and go find a mythical beast to help him with his illness.
At first, he seems to be making bad decisions as he blunders a bit with his first robbery, but slowly you realize just what Sethion is facing, the dignity he has lost, and what he's trying to regain. When the mythical beasts start to appear, this story starts to get exciting.
The writing is solid throughout and the characterization of Sethion is spot on—he's in a sorry state, and seems to be desperate for help. That desperation comes through clearly, and I'm hopeful that as the story continues Sethion grows and changes as a character in positive ways.
Thanks for the story, I'm excited to see what other kinds of mythical creatures show up in the coming chapters! - Gray Word ArtsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A noble boy in a fantastic Romanesque warrior culture is ill with a terminal disease - the Rot - that will soon claim his life. With only limited time left to him, the boy tries his hand at thievery, only to fail when his illness catches up to him. Priests can do nothing. Then one day, his father leaves a dagger instead of a priest at his side. From here, the dying noble boy chooses to move onwards and finds himself writing the next chapter in his soon to be legendary tale...
I'll skip right to the chase: This story is recommended, hands down. The author has a clear love for Roman history, Gaelic face, and various other myths and legends the world over. Technically the writing is immaculate, and the author firmly centers our hero's struggle to claim what he believes are the final days of his life, and makes an aspiring gentleman thief into a sympathetic friend who we can't help but cheer for, even as his Rot ruins his efforts at seemingly every turn.
Do yourself a favor: Read this tale. It's worth it. - Max DanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The writing is rich in detail, immersing the reader in a world of intrigue, pain, and mythology. The story itself follows Sethion, a noble-turned-thief, as he attempts to escape a life that feels like a slow death.
I love the dynamic between Sethion and other characters. Sethion’s quick thinking and sharp tongue make him an engaging protagonist, and the world-building is subtly woven into the dialogue.
The writing maintains a steady pace, keeping the reader hooked while leaving just enough mystery to want more.
A must-read for fantasy fans seeking adventure and well-written story - SR FauthRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was an engaging and compelling tale centered around a protagonist afflicted with a mysterious disease and an insatiable drive to hunt mythological beings. Beyond the intriguing premise, the novel excels by delivering a well-crafted narrative accompanied by sharp, thoughtful prose.
Style 5/5: The author expertly constructs a vivid and immersive world, rich in detail yet remarkably free of unnecessary exposition. The descriptions of settings, characters, and mythological entities are precise and evocative, seamlessly bringing each scene to life without overwhelming the reader.
Story 5/5: At its core, the story follows a young hero driven to confront gods or beings that might as well be. This gripping tale of survival quickly evolves, hinting at deeper mysteries and potentially larger narratives to come. The pacing maintains a satisfying balance, keeping the reader eager and invested, hungry to see how far the protagonist's journey will lead.
Grammar 4.5/5: The writing demonstrates a high level of grammatical polish, with minimal errors throughout. There were a few moments where dialogue, particularly in brief exchanges, could benefit from additional descriptive text or emotional depth to enhance clarity and immersion. Nevertheless, these instances are minor and do little to detract from the overall high quality of the writing.
Character 5/5: Character development is a significant strength in this novel. The main character and supporting cast are intricately crafted, consistent, and dynamically evolve through believable motivations and backstories. Notably, even secondary characters possess compelling depth, enhancing the overall realism and engagement of the narrative.
Overall 5/5: This is an excellent and meticulously written story, skillfully balancing creativity and coherence. It captures attention from beginning to end, clearly composed with care and purposeful intent. I confidently rate it a solid A. - ZacheasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is about a young noble boy named Sethion who is tired of slowly wasting away at home with no one able to cure him. Not willing to accept the fate of suffering in wait for an inevitable painful death and not willing to take his own life he decides to run. Consequently, he also tries his hand and thievery and deception. He's... not great at it. Perpetually being sickly on death's door doesn't prepare you for physical activity or boost your Charisma. SO, he sets out on an adventure in a word of magic and powerful beasts with the goal of taming one such beast and gaining the power to change his fate.
The characters in this story are very well written with clear and relatable feeling, goals and motivations. They act in ways that are logical for their characterizations and are consistent.
The world building is very well done without any large exposition dumps. The world is unique and creatively designed. It seems to pull a lot from old Romen empire themes but does not mirror it.
The grammar and spelling are on point. The structure of the pose and sentences are well constructed and easy to read.
For style the story makes good use of hooks and cliff hangers. There is some early action to pull the readers in and plenty of tension to keep people engaged.
I read up through chapter 10 and I really like where this story is going.
Overall the story is entertaining and engaging. I encourage you give it a read.
