I’m not quite sure how early or late in the overall story I’m writing this review, but the romance plot(s) are definitely beginning to take shape and take off, so it seems like a fair time to share my initial impressions.
So far, the story is living up to the synopsis’s promises. The bit about “debugging your way through adulthood” certainly rings true.
The story is light, quick, and peppy in places, but it does slow to give things space when it should. I’m finding it to be a very enjoyable read so far (as anyone might guess from the chapter comments I’ve been leaving frequently. ^^).
Style: While not entirely unique (I’ve certainly seen other authors, published authors, take a similar approach), the writing style is definitely not your classic narrative format. It wouldn’t surprise me if some readers find it a bit off-putting, but I found it quickly began to feel very natural and easy to follow by the second or third chapter. And it’s fun to not only see someone trying something a little different, but also succeeding at it, which earns it a few extra points in my eyes. The author’s also gone the extra distance to incorporate some illustrations here and there into the text, and more often than not it feels like something that adds to the quality of the story.
Story: There’s a lot to love here, too. The plot so far has been both entertaining and engaging, with a welcome sprinkle of humor throughout. I do enjoy a good romance story, but there’s more than a few common romance tropes that I can find off-putting, but thankfully this story has managed to avoid all of them (at least so far). Like any romance story, everyone finds their enjoyment in different ways, and your mileage may vary. But I suspect this story had a decent chance of threading the needle with a fairly broad appeal.
Grammar: To be clear upfront, the grammar is not bad at all, objectively. But of the different scoring criteria, this is the area that’s noticeably slightly weaker. Nothing so egregious as
