Description
“Do not fear death. Do not fear the sword that brings it.” She brings her lips to my ear.“It’s the fear, not the sword, that will kill you in the end.”
Lin Jia is sent away to study the ways of the immortals; powerful cultivators who bend the very world around them. She steps into the Flowing River Sect, a place with a long history and discovers The Twelve Requiems of Illusion.
The Requiems guide her music, pulling her into powerful illusions that twist the very world around her. Each note is a battle fought long ago, each melody is a lesson from immortals who had lived and died thousands of years before her time.
She will need the power of her illusions to protect her against the demons both inside and outside of her sect.

- ShyrainRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0if you are a fan of Xianxia, this is a worthwhile story to pick up.
it’s well-written: the story flows smoothly and is very engaging
The novel does a great job of bringing realistic characters together so that they have fun interactions and it brings you further into the story.
Original — the story has its own interesting take on new cultivation methods — respecting the old systems while bringing in new twists.
This is a great binge-read because it really gets you engaged and caring about the characters and what happens, and the plot is fun and interesting.
So I would definitely check out this story. It is very well done. - forreanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Move onto the next review if your looking for clever wordplay, I'm afraid I'm not capable of such. Keeping it simple;
This author offers a story that will draw you in with descriptions and a story that will spring to live in your mind.
It's really fun, relaxing even, to read! It's not a slice of life though! There's still bloodshed, strong emotion, really it follows a lot of the normal troupes. The MC is just refreshing and the story doesn't have any gimmicks (though those can be fun too). - Cyberian SailorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you are a fan of Xianxia this story is for you. If you are not a fan of Xianxia you might want to give it a try still because it avoids most tropes and pitfalls that make the genre less palatable to a general audience. I like the solid writing and structuring especially. Nothing is really superfluous here.
The main character is very relatable and a breath of fresh air I really like her perspective. As for the other characters they feel like people in their own right with their own struggles and secrets.
The plot is also engaging and it preserves an amount of mystery.
All in all, give it a read! - HamsterDesTodesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A hauntingly beautiful tale that hits you right in the feels when you least expect it.
I now have Requiem for a Dream on repeat over and over again.

Fifty words minimum seems quite silly. This review is more of an Impression than a full description, why do I have to write 50 words when all I want is to bath in the glow of this story. - sleepyblinkyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Unlike many stories in the genre, this one doesn't have the endless filler elements that pad the story. This is both an advantage in that there is progress quickly, and a disadvantage in that it sometimes feels abbreviated. The main character is kind and often seems simplistic by being surprised by other people choosing conflict. The focus is very much on how she learns to cope with other people's choices, and how she lives with her own. There is an abundance of conflict and death, as well decent world building.
The rewrite has smoothed some of the rougher edges of this story. - AzureWhaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Familiar setup, BUT a different execution. The author does an excellent job of portraying a young girl as she grows. The magic system is one I've not seen before, and it is well thought-out.
The various hints as to what is brewing behind the scenes are neither too few nor too many.
The secondary characters are not just cardboard placeholders but instead are developed enough that their personalities are distinctive.
Overall a very pleasant story. Looking forward to seeing where it goes! - AttieMelkertRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5What a refreshing take on cultivation stories!
I love how the author manages to curb the tropes that generally overflow this genre, to a degree that non of it has bothered me, not even in the slightest way, during the entire story.
That means no brainless young masters with the IQ of an ape, no ice cold pure yin beauties, no crippled cultivation or 0 cultivation talent and rising above all other by hard work alone, no nationalist propaganda, no bad mtlish translations, no overly complicated vague cultivation nonsense, no stupid pretend to be weak but secrectely the strongest of them all!
This story proves it can be done and what an amazingly entertaining result it is! It deserves far more attention than it currently has, thats for sure and I think one day the story will have it, if the author keeps going the way he currently does!
I hate writing revieuws this way but this story deserves it.
Ohh, I love the MC btw and her skills are awesome!
Now all I need is 10k pages more of this please 😅 - roflkong3Royal Road★★★ 2.5Style: 3,5
As a non-English speaker: Good flow, thorough writing, and clear planning. Sometimes descriptions feel either a bit too elaborate or too short, but overall well-balanced. The tone stays consistent throughout the story and supports the emotional and comedic moments.
Grammar: 3,5
My understanding may not be perfect, but I noticed no glaring issues. The text reads smoothly, dialogue feels natural, and narration is mostly clear and effortless to follow.
Story: 3
The plot progresses steadily, with solid worldbuilding and a deep, consistent magic system. There's a good mix of action, fluff, and emotional beats. However, one major issue seriously hurt my enjoyment: the extremely one-sided gender portrayal. Around chapter 40, two male characters are introduced. I was hopeful – finally, some balance! But no. One has multiple personalities and is a thief; the other is tied to a sugar mommy who’s a prostitute. It’s hard not to associate these traits with negative connotations. It genuinely pulled me out of the story. If a story had only male characters portrayed as “good” and all women sidelined or flawed, I’d find that just as frustrating. Why does it have to be like this?
Character: 1
The MC is well-developed and her relationships feel intentional and meaningful. The female cast is strong, emotionally resonant, and memorable. But the lack of any balanced or positive male characters stands out in a bad way. When men appear, they’re either irrelevant, absent, or connected to clearly negative traits. It’s not about needing a 50/50 gender split – it’s about fairness and nuance. The imbalance undermines the otherwise thoughtful character writing.
Final thoughts:
I do like this story – really. The writing style is pleasant, the pacing works, and there’s a strong mix of tension, emotion, and humor. But the gender imbalance just gets in the way. Why does it need to be like this? The story would be significantly better without it.
