This story is a stylish blend of noir detective fiction and science fiction. The author masterfully transplants the smoky, cynical atmosphere of old black\white crime films into a futuristic setting - a starship where instead of pistols and alleys, there are sails reflecting matter at stellar speeds.
The dialogue feels sharp and authentic, especially in the scene with Snake Lady- full of tension, irony, and that classic noir dance between temptation and calculation. The narrator is a perfectly drawn “flatfoot” : cynical, observant, with a flask in his pocket and a conscience he negotiates with.
The mystery itself : a “reflected murder” solved through physics - is ingenious. A scientific detail becomes the key to the case, and the ending lands beautifully: justice of a sort is served, but in a quiet, morally gray way that fits the genre.
a smart, atmospheric, and witty sci-fi noir where old-school detective logic meets the cold precision of stellar mechanics. thnak you! good story

Very nice so far, after just two installments. A film-noir-style private eye tries to solve a murder on a spaceship, surrounded by dames and wiseguys, etc. etc. The prose style is appropriately over the top.
Although WE KNOW WHAT A SLIDE RULE IS :) or maybe the younger waves don't, these days.
