Murder Medic: A Demonic Healer LitRPG

Description

Zoe died, got better, and woke up in a new world… with a stat system. That’s neat, but where is her S-Tier cheat power?

As a newly minted healer, Zoe doesn’t need a unique ability to take on murderous cultists, an equally murderous paladin, and the weather. She’d certainly like one, though. It’s a fast-paced, violent world, filled with undead ghouls, sprawling dungeons, and far too many scheming nobles, all of whom want a piece of her. A healer is a valuable asset—and becoming a demon and blood magic user only ups the ante.

But when life doesn’t give you a cheat power, you figure out how to take it. And Zoe’s new demon side reveals the first step to do just that:

Level up.Violently.

First off: This might as well be a new story compared to the legacy version. Some names show up again, some concepts or ideas get reused, but most of it is new. (If I remember correctly, lol) And it‘s much better. It‘s not perfect, there‘s one last thing that irks me, but I‘ll come to that. That doesn’t devalue all the good things tho. Overall I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to both new readers as well as those who already read the legacy version.
    Style:
Probably what changed the least — and that‘s good, because it was already really good the first time around.
    Story:
There is a coherent story, which is also clear to us readers. That was the one greatest weakness last time around. We learn about the world, different groups of interest and how they affect the MC. World building is good, the system not too generic and the whole thing is quite engaging. A solid foundation, upon which a great story can be build.
Now, as of writing this, there isn‘t much beyond said foundation. The story is in its beginner stage, so I might be asking for a lot. The MC still drifts around with no agenda beyond staying alive and leveling up. And is constantly at the mercy of others several orders of magnitude stronger than her. Which is frustrating as it drags out and there‘s no end in sight. I will amend this review once the MC actually gains some graspable goals and the power to do something herself.
    Grammar:
Found two formatting issues, a few odd commas and one wrongly autocorrected word across 120,000 words. I‘ve seen worse in printed books. Nothing to complain here.
    Character:
There‘s a number of important characters around this time, each one distinct. They have their alignments and some have goals as well. But they aren’t fleshed out yet and I feel it‘s slowly getting overdue. Knowing what a character hopes for, values and fears would be nice.
    Overall:
So… it‘s good. It will be really good, once we actually get to see the main character make an impact. Something that I ho

I need morrrreeeee, I love the characters, especially the mc, and the setting is well done, the writing is pretty good, and I'm really just trying to fill a word count because I'm tired and need to sleep but wanted to review anyway, but you know how things are with rr's arbitrary word counts.

There was an earlier version which was much more fast pace. The problem was that new things got added nearly without rhyme or reason. In the end it didn't feel like the same story anymore.
Cue this rewrite. This story is much more thought through. While it's not as break neck paced as the original, this one trumps with it's main character. She is such a joy.
The magic system is also much more thought out. It is consistent and engaging and to my admittedly limited knowledge original.

While the story contains violence, bad characters, something like politics, and almost crosses an uncrossable line of individual agency, it is craftily well balanced and falls on the fun side of story making.  My emotional satisfaction as a reader and the level of curiosity or anticipation have held steady since the beginning.  I truly enjoyed the legacy original, but enjoyed the rewrite more.
Now I am looking forward to every book and every Royal read chapter to come.  I obtained all the digital media released so far!!  I hope that hints at how much I like it.

Aside from the occasional typo, this story is very competently written, and I love the MC Zoe. She's not the sharpest crayon in the box, but she's not stupid either, and she is accurately described as "impulsive, with an underdeveloped sense of empathy." An agent of chaos dripping with charm! Besides that though, the worldbuilding is detailed and thoughtful, and the side characters really feel alive. I've grown very fond of this fic and hope it continues for a long time to come

With a main character that is both fun to follow, has depth, and an at least somewhat realistic mindset, this story keeps me wanting more.
The world is rich in detail, history and side characters that slowly grow over time.
The system is thought through, complex and sufficiently snarky to be funny without losing the artificial intelligence feeling of it.
Overall, I recommend giving this story a try.

And different, in this case, means worse.
Rewind a bit though. Murder Medic existed. It had the feature of a really great start -- frantic, tense, just all around good, including perhaps the first instance of a MC killing people absurdly above her level making sense that I read on here. It was necessary for the plot, of course, but it also worked, and hugely contributed to said great start.
Afterwards, the story continued in a Zoe-vs-The-World direction (Good!), but eventually lost the plot (literally). The pirates were nonsense, and a rewrite makes sense.
Cut to this story. This is not a rewrite. It's a new story.
If you evaluate it based on that, it's okay. There are worse stories here, certainly; there'd be a few things that might bug you, like the split personality/extra soul, but no clear deal-breaker. I'd recommend it. Unfortunately, I can't look at it on its own, because I always look at the old story and miss it here. The original plot going nowhere aside, it's just a downgrade in all other aspects, and that's a pity.
Take, for instance, the central element of the story: The demonic ascension of the MC. In the original, it was fully motivated -- a last Hail-Mary effort to stay alive, a desperate decision when the alternative was dying the next moment. There was a clear progression from waking up to ending up as a demon -- a necessary consequence, a clear chain of constantly worsening circumstances that kept the reader in suspense as to how the MC might escape, and introduced the story's raison d'être as the (involuntary) solution. It was, quite simply, a good piece of writing.
Contrast with the new story: The demonic ascension is quite literally an afterthought -- by the time Zoe reaches the core, she's powerful, healthy and might even have a chance of escaping, and basically picks up the core Because Why Not. The story's premise thus is reduced to "I randomly became a demon one day". The frantic energy of the original is gone, the stakes are gone, hell the

Logarhythm's first go at Murder Medic was fun and had a good start, but it suffered from cripplingly fast pacing and eventually devolved into a tangled mess of plot threads and confusing elements. I'm very happy to say that so far, this version of it doesn't seem to face the same issues as the first. Note that this review mostly compares to the first version of Murder Medic, though this is still applicable to new readers too!
The first version of the story lost sight of who Zoe was and who she could be, and while this version does unfortunately still stray into some of the same, I wouldn't complain about it in any other novel. She, and all the rest, are fairly well developed and don't feel as paper thin as they did in prior versions, and the story itself flows in a much more natural direction. My only complaints here are that the characters could still have used more, well, characterization. They are unfortunately at times easy to confuse, and Zoe feels more like a reflection of the world, rather than Zoe being placed into the world, especially later in the novel. This is somewhat belayed by mentions of Zoe's out-of-touchness, but we aren't really given any down time with the characters to understand them, and they start to be introduced at a breakneck pace towards the end and aren't really developed beyond having who they were directly stated. The characters themselves are also somewhat lacking in physical descriptions and the interweaving of them into the setting, and it ends up making them feel kind of generic. Despite all of this, the characters overall felt good, rather than rushed and not well put together as they were previously, and I am very glad to see the improvement.
Specifically, the reveal of Zoe's mind fracturing (or her gaining her passenger - its never really explained what exactly Lilith is) took me a few tries to actually understand. The adventuring party as a whole, Sasha, and Lodtwick were all fun but ultimately Zoe felt like she was too good at

Pros: I respect that the author decided to make the protagonist a proper slightly sociopathic ADD murder hobo, who's only thought after being isekai'd is that her parents weren't that close to her anyway, and she was on the way to her own independent life at any case.
Nice particularly as many Isekai-stories have (for me) these very emotional backstories about friends never finding out what happened to the protagonist, while the protagonist themselves seems to move on without a trauma. I appreciate the protagonist being undisturbed by their past due to their character, not because the writer not wanting to write therapy sittings (compare: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Xander's and Willow's BFF since kindergarten isn't mentioned once after they die in the pilot).
Negatives: I can't quite put my finger on it, but at no point did I feel like I was that invested with anything that happened. Things just happen, and they kept happening. Numbers went up, and they kept going up, but other than the common "bigger numbers are better for survival", I don't really see what the bigger numbers are for.
The main problem with the story is that when the main character is ADD murder hobo to whom nothing seems to matter (expect STONKS), then for story reasons there should be a committed straight guy to set both a moral compass and an agenda, or otherwise have something to work for. In this case the protagonist is a scion for some mysterious deity, but they don't seem to be that interested in finding out more, even as System offers a reward. There's a cult who she seems to face repeatedly, but isn't that interested in finding out who leads it. Inquisition seems to be hunting her for being a demon, but she's not interested in getting herself cleared or otherwise out from the hit list. The rich people seem to have plans for her, but she's more-or-less ok with not knowing what they are.
I understand that this is all part of the character (and I respect the author for being so clear with this)

I read the first version until chapter 45 and really enjoyed the great immersive start. It was enough momentum to carry me through a lot weaker chapters.
This rewrite now can no longer captivate me at all.
Strange, I hoped for a better story to follow but I have to say, this new version is definitely not it.
