Monsters in the Hallways

Description

Classic Detective Story Setup: A body is found in a locked dressing room. No one was seen entering or leaving. How did it happen? For people like Madison Gardner, the answer is very simple. They came through the mirrors.

Reflection-hopping is as easy as riding a unicycle. And ten times as dangerous, with all the nefarious uses for it. That danger is upped another notch as a monster starts pacing the hallways behind the mirrors, feasting on all who wander it. Except the people don't think it's a monster. They think it's just another power-hungry reflection-hopper like all the rest.

Now they want to ban reflection-hopping as a whole, and only Madison is left to unmask the real monster, backed up by a conspiratorial detective, a vengeful girl, and a rookie fireman, before time runs out.

I read this story a while ago, back at the beginning of July, and meant to write a full review for it, but I got pretty busy and forgot to give it a review. Oops. Luckily, I saved it as a tab, and when doing some tab cleanup, I realized I had never reviewed this story, and for that, I apologize to the author who did such an amazing job with this story.
I was highly impressed by the tightness of the narrative and the writing. In my opinion, this novella would be on best-rated finished if more people read it.
Style: The writing felt smooth and polished. I remember being drawn in by the prose and thinking the author's writing was quite good.
Story: Tightly written and neatly wrapped up mystery novella. I loved how it connected to the June 2023 Royal Road Magazine contest's theme of "Mirrors Can't Eat People".
Grammar: I don't remember any problems. It was a while ago that I read it.
Characters: Interesting characters with their own quirks and personalities. The detective and MC duo played well of each other and the dialogue was well written.
Overall, I'm very glad I read this story. I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick novella-length story that likes mystery stories (or stories with a bit of a horror element to read for their October spooky reading month).
