The story appears plain at start, as it seems to draw from some what overused cliques, but later on, everything changes.
The first chapters that were used for worldbuilding, now they come back into strong relief, each piece adding to a greater whole.
The characters are somewhat interesting, but feel incomplete. Most of their conversations seem to center around their past and backstories. Adding to the worldbuilding more than anywhere else.
The pacing is kind of bad. For instance, one moment they're being hunted by security, the next they're making first contact and just moments later a couple of chapters with combat training pop in. And so on.
The redeeming feature though, the reason why it has such a high score from me, is the very interesting story and world, especially the blend of magic and technology I haven't seen before.
